This text is an important resource for teachers and students interested in computing. It meets the demand for a true ploblem solving textbook written especially for high schools. Well known author J.N.P. Hume demonstrates the essential link between programming and problem solving. He explores the various known methodologies and provides the fundamentals of computer programming for exploring the kinds of problems that can be examined by these methods.
Preface to Problem Solving and Programming in Turbo Pascal
Computer Programming is approximately forty years old and problem solving (both as concept and goal) has been with us since the beginning.

A compiler/interpreter for a part of the Ada language, namely the pascal subset plus the Ada tasking support. It is not intended ever to be a full Ada compiler, rather a vehicle for teaching, learning, and experimenting with concurrent programming. Description
Hash functions are by definition and implementation pseudo random number generators (PRNG). From this generalization its generally accepted that the performance of hash functions and also comparisons between hash functions can be achieved by treating hash function as PRNGs. Analysis techniques such a Poisson distribution can be used to analyze the collision rates of different hash functions for different groups of data. In general there is a theoretical hash function known as the perfect hash function for any group of data. The perfect hash function by definition states that no collisions will occur meaning no repeating hash values will arise from different elements of the group. In reality its very difficult to find a perfect hash function, in practice it is recognized that a perfect hash function is the hash function that produces the least amount of collisions for a particular set of data.

138. Pascal To Java: Easy Transformation Part 1
A quick and dirty tutorial to show pascal programmers how easy it is to convert their skills to Java. This tutorial does not cover proper object oriented programming, and is merely meant to give pascal programmers a head start with Java.

Pascal to Java: Easy Transformation Part 1
Introduction
Hi, I'm back to write some tutorials. This time, I'd like to share on how Pascal programmers could easily learn Java. Note that the method I'm going to describe here is a shortcut , so that you, object oriented programming gurus, take this as a precaution as I won't teach a proper OOP here. I just want to share this tips so that Pascal programmers don't spend too much effort on OOP gimmicks on learning the fun part of Java. Of course my hope is that all of those Pascal freaks will eventually apply the real OOP when they do Java. Note also that you don't even have to understand OOP before learning Java although it's really useful if you do. I'm writing this tutorials because there are so many talented programmers in Indonesia so hooked up with the Pascal. I loved it, but now no more since Pascal is no longer properly developed. I simply can't count on Delphi or other variations of 32-bit Pascals since they are NOT standardized. Hey, I don't hate Pascal. I just want that all of those guys keep up with the cutting-edge technology, namely Java. Those guys are not familiar with OOP. So, I write on this guide for those audience to quickly adopt Java. I do assume that you, my dear reader, 100% familiar with Pascal or Turbo Pascal. I also assume that you have already installed

Programming in C and Pascal Under Unix
There are a number of different programming languages available on our systems. The ones most commonly used in coursework are C, Fortran, Pascal, Lisp, and Prolog. This document talks most specifically about C and Pascal. However most of what it says applies also to the other languages that use compilers, such as Fortran. Lisp and Prolog are very different, and require their own documentation.
CONTENTS
A Roadmap for Preparing and Debugging a Program
There are three basic steps to preparing and running a program:
  • Preparing the source files, using an editor.
  • Compiling and building the program. This step reads the source files, and turns them into an executable program.
  • Testing and debugging.
We recommend using Emacs for all of these steps. While Emacs is basically an editor, it has special facilities to control compilers and debuggers. When you compile under the control of Emacs, Emacs will look at the error messages, and let you go directly to the appropriate place in the source file. When you use a debugger under the control of Emacs, Emacs will watch what is happening and point you to the appropriate line in the source file. If you have used integrated programming development tools on a micro, you'll find that the Emacs environment has similar facilities, but it is not quite as automated. You must tell Emacs when you want to compile the program, and when you want to restart the debugger. Fortunately these things are easy to.
