Programming Language Critiques: Pascal, C, C++, and C-Linda
Jim Basney
May 1995
The essential purpose of a programming language is to allow a programmer to give precise instructions to the computer. Programming languages do this with varying degrees of effectiveness. High-level programming languages have many benefits: they provide for portability; they abstract away machine details to simplify the task of programming; and some of them use type systems to provide program-correctness checking. New programming languages are being developed each year, and one would hope that they are getting better at filling the needs of programmers. This process can not proceed without a dialogue of criticism on current programming languages and what programmers would like to see in new languages. In this paper I will survey some criticisms of the Pascal, C, and C++ languages, and also I will put forward some of my own criticisms of the C-Linda programming language. Additionally, there are significant problems with control-flow and source code organization. There is "no guaranteed order of evaluation of the logical operators and and or" (Kernighan 7). This disallows tests like "while (i Additionally, there is criticism of the way C++ implements object-oriented programming. One of my main complaints with C++, which Joyner also makes in his paper, is the fact that private class members must be included in the header file that is exported to the user of the class. This seems to go against the object-oriented paradigm, where the user of the class should not know how the class is implemented, but is only told how to use the interface to that class. There is also no way to declare a method for a class which can not be overridden by a child class. Lastly, virtual function declarations in classes are unnecessary bookkeeping that could be done by the compiler.

P ASCAL L ANGUAGE T UTORIAL This tutorial teaches the entire Pascal programming language. It is composed of 16 chapters which should be studied in order since topics are introduced in a logical order and build upon topics introduced in previous chapters. This tutorial contains a strong emphasis on object oriented programming and what it will do to improve the quality of your code. It is to the students benefit to download the source code for the example programs, then compile and execute each program as it is studied. The diligent student will modify the example program in some way, then recompile and execute it to see if he understands the material studied for that program. This will provide the student with valuable experience using his compiler. The recommended method of study is to print the text for one or two chapters, download the example programs, and study the material by loading the example programs in the compiler's editor for viewing. Following successful completion of each chapter, additional chapters can be downloaded as progress is made. Version 2.61 - September 29, 1996 - (Files restructured on March 16, 1997)

This site offers write-ups of how to do specific things in Delphi or Pascal. Feel free to use them in programming courses, but a credit of the source would be appreciated. Speaking of which... the following was a great help to my own programming: 'Borland Delphi How-To', from the Waite Group, by Frerking, Wallace and Niddery, ISBN 1-57169-019-0. Its approach suited my needs, and helped inspire the form of these tutorials: Most are a self-contained explanations of how to accomplish a specific task, or use a particular component of the language. There are more notes at the bottom of the page about other offerings, my editorial philosophy, a button to email me, and a search engine to help you find things in my site. The 'How To...' items at the bottom of the menus for some levels will take you to information on specific little odds and ends.

Level Zero: If you are not only new to Delphi, but also new to programming, you might want to learn Pascal first! There is a free product which you could use for that. What you learn with it will all contribute to getting going easily with Delphi. Working with Pascal first lets you master one group of issues before you contend with them AND some issues that are involved with any Windows language.

Learn Pascal tutorial : History
Origins
Pascal grew out of ALGOL, a programming language intended for scientific computing. Meeting in Zurich, an international committee designed ALGOL as a platform-independent language. This gave them more more free rein in the features they could put into it, but also made it more difficult to write compilers for it. Those were the days when many computers lacked hardware features that we now take for granted. The lack of compilers on many platforms, combined with its lack of pointers and many basic data types such as characters, led to ALGOL not being widely accepted. Scientists and engineers flocked to FORTRAN, a programming language which was available on many platforms. ALGOL mostly faded away except as a language for describing algorithms.
Wirth Invents Pascal
In the 1960s, several computer scientists worked on extending ALGOL. One of these was Dr. Niklaus Wirth of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH-Zurich), a member of the original group that created ALGOL. In 1971, he published his specification for a highly-structured language which resembled ALGOL in many ways. He named it Pascal after the 17th-century French philosopher and mathematician who built a working mechanical digital computer.

Pascal programming language
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Pascal is an imperative computer programming language , developed in by Niklaus Wirth as a language particularly suitable for structured programming Pascal is based on the Algol programming language and named in honor of mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal . Wirth also developed Modula-2 and Oberon , languages similar to Pascal which additionally support object-oriented programming Initially, Pascal was a hypothetical language intended to teach students structured programming, and generations of students have "cut their teeth" on Pascal as an introductory language in undergraduate courses. Variants of Pascal are still widely used today, both in education and software development. Much of the original Macintosh operating system was written in Pascal. The popular typesetting system TeX is written in a language named WEB for which Donald Knuth borrowed heavily from Pascal.
