Parrots and rum
by Barnaby Rogerson Before I die, I want to float for a week down a river in South America in a small but well-crewed boat, looking at parrots as I doze on a hammock sipping rum cocktails. Barnaby Rogerson Barnaby Rogerson was conceived upon a yacht and was born in Dunfermline. Eighteen years later he got a lift on a Naval destroyer leaving Gibraltar and returned to Fife as a history student at St Andrews.
After two jobs in publishing he worked for the Afghanistan Support Committee, as a tutor on a Greek island, as a barman and in the restoration of grottoes and the construction of garden temples. In the last ten years he has been a travel writer specializing in North Africa and the lands of the old Ottoman Empire. He also takes lecture tours and with Rose Baring set up Sickle Moon in 2000 which re-prints classic travel books.

ASU Researcher Finds Novel Chemistry At Work To Provide Parrot's Vibrant Red Colors
For more than a century, biochemists have known that parrots use an unusual set of pigments to produce their rainbow of plumage colors, but their biochemical identity has remained elusive. Now, an Arizona State University researcher has uncovered the chemistry behind the colors of parrots, describing on a molecular level what is responsible for their bright red feathers. Animals, like birds and fishes, commonly use biochromes like carotenoids to acquire red, orange or yellow coloration, but McGraw and Nogare found that these compounds are not responsible for the red colors found in the parrot species they sampled. The researchers used a chemical analysis technique called high-performance liquid chromatography to survey the pigments present in red parrot feathers. McGraw and Nogare collected and analyzed samples from 44 parrot species that have red feathers. Overall, there are some 350 species of parrots, 80 percent of which have red in their plumage.

87. General Constraints
Suppose a docent may show either parrots or hawks at the 200 PM bird show. like Figure 3, but the general constraint parrots and hawks must be chosen
http://osm7.cs.byu.edu/OSA/generalConst.html
General Constraints
General constraints specify information about what is and is not valid. They differ from other constraints in having no restrictions on means or form of expression. General constraints can be informal, human-language statements, or they can be fully formalized as algebraic statements or first-order logic. General constraints can apply to ORM's, OBM's, state nets , OIM's, or any combination of them.
General Constraints in Object-Relationship Models
The Botswana Youth Zoo keeps both rhesus monkeys and baboons in the same enclosure. Suppose that there must be at least twice as many rhesus monkeys as baboons, otherwise the baboons may kill the monkeys. We can easily show that baboons and the monkeys are both kept in the Monkey House, as in Figure 1 , but we need a general constraint to express the relation between the number of baboons and monkeys at the BY Zoo.
Figure 1. General constraint on number of baboons and monkeys We could have stated the constraint more formally by using variables in the participation constraints and giving an algebraic relation, as in

This will help you along on what some general care is on keeping a pet bird, this not only applies
to Pionus but to all parrot species. Give your pet bird the best you have to offer. Your relationship
with your pet bird should be meant to last a life time but often people tire of a bird and the bird
has to learn to love all over again with someone different, sad but true. If you feel you can't commit
yourself to a pet birds messy nature then a bird is not for you, your house will not stay as clean
it did before you had one. They are worse than a kid, they do not ever clean up after themselves!
[This page is loaded with a lot of info so it is quite long] Remember that a parrot lives much longer than a dog or cat will so your bird is a much longer commitment. So many parrots are given up as people just can not tolerate the upkeep of a bird any longer. Birds are definitely more upkeep than dog and cats. With the busy lives that people maintain now a days makes it even harder to keep up with the needs of a bird. The one key factor is not enough attention towards the bird. Birds need and require a certain amount of attention and love each day, without it they don't thrive as well. I truly believe this is why birds are given up so much now a days as no one even has time for themselves let alone even a bird. Our society is not like it use to be, people can't slow down even for a minute.

FEEDING AN AMAZON PARROT
General Information
There is a lot of information available about diets for pet birds and as time goes on, our knowledge continues to improve. This is due to heightened awareness of the importance of nutrition plus increased research involving pets and wild birds. As with all other animals, birds need a proper balance of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and water. Different species of birds often require different foods.
Should I be concerned about what my Amazon eats?
Nutrition is the most commonly neglected element of owning a pet bird. Too often owners assume they are feeding a proper diet to their amazon when in fact they are not. It is a common source of many health problems. It is important to continually strive to improve your bird's diet. This will involve reading, carefully interpreting and integrating the information along with a certain degree of common sense. Above all, discuss nutrition with your veterinarian!
It is not good enough to feed an amazon just to keep it alive; instead your goal should be to help it thrive and flourish. Your bird's entire health will depend on how well it is fed.

http://www.quakerparrots.com/qms/discussion_of_feather_picking.htm
A General Discussion of Feather Plucking
Held by Dianalee Deter at Parrot Festival '99
and written by Shelly Lane First, Take The Bird To A Vet When a parrot first begins pulling or mutilating its feathers, Dianalee strongly believes the bird should immediately be taken to a qualified avian veterinarian for a complete work-up, including a CBC, to rule out any possible medical problems. I have to agree. There are medical causes of feather plucking and with the tests that are available, they are the easiest causes to determine. It just makes sense to go this route first. Humidity Regular bathing is necessary for feather health, and a bird that has dirty feathers and/or dry itchy skin is more prone to plucking. This is especially true in areas of the country that experience a lack of humidity. Remember that in many areas, lack of humidity is a seasonal problem so if your bird tends to pluck only at certain times of the year, this is a cause you might want to consider. Frequent showers or baths may help alleviate or prevent feather disorder behaviors in parrots, especially if you live in an area where lack of humidity in the air is an issue. Using a humidifier during the dry times of the year may also help. Diet Lighting Dianalee recommends full spectrum lighting if your parrot does not have access to unfiltered sunlight (light coming through the windows in our homes is filtered). She also believes that seasonal lighting changes can contribute to feather grooming disorders. Mattie Sue Athan said much the same thing in her presentation on screaming. She states that the time of the year that she calls "Screaming Season" beings at the winter solstice (Dec 21st). One way to deal with this is to provide plenty of light in your home that goes on and off at regular times.

QUESTIONS FOR THE BREEDER
So you want to share your home and your heart with an Eclectus parrot and you have located a few breeders NOW what? How do you determine which breeder is best for you? Before you call or visit, be prepared to ask the right questions to get the information that you need. If you can find a good local breeder, that's a plus because you will have good access to support after the purchase. Good breeders will welcome your questions and they will also have questions for you to assure that their Eclectus baby goes to a good home. Here are some suggested questions for your interview of breeders.
  • How long have you kept companion birds and how many years have you bred Eclectus parrots?
Experience is a plus in many ways but new or small-scale breeders generally have the advantage of more time to socialize their birds, so there are advantages to both large and small breeding aviaries. How many different parrot species do you breed? How many subspecies of Eclectus do you breed?
