Outreach Services Public Forums Feathered Family is glad to reach out to any public forum to help educate about parrots. We have been featured on a local Colorado pet television program (Pet Peeves), have been written up in a national magazine (All You Magazine), have contributed some articles to an online magazine (My sweet Pet) and are happy to do anything else we can to increase the public knowledge regarding parrots, proper parrot care, and parrot rescue. Please, feel free to contact us if you feel we can help you with a project that will help make sure parrots receive the proper love and care they deserve. Classroom or Club Presentations Feathered Family is happy to offer educational presentations. We are happy to bring our bird’s, and our knowledge to your Class, Parrot Club, or special event. Some of our resident parrots are familiar with doing special activities, and enjoy meeting and greeting new people. We never put any parrot that dislikes groups into these situations, and not all parrots are available for all activities. Most times at least one of our personal companion parrots are available for events and will accompany us, along with resident birds who enjoy this kind of socialization. We are happy to do thirty to sixty minute presentations. We have two focuses available, general parrot education and public education. Our General presentation focuses mainly on parrot care, needs, diet, and the how and why of living with a parrot. Our Public education presentation is much more geared to adults, and deals with conservation, specialized breeding, and rescue.

The ancient, flightless Kakapo is the world's rarest and strangest parrot. It the only flightless and nocturnal parrot, as well as being the heaviest in the world, weighing up to 3.5 kilograms (8 lbs). The birds live in New Zealand, an island country which had virtually no mammals living on it for millions of years. It was a place inhabited by birds and reptiles. The only types of mammal were two species of bats. The Kakapo did not learn the defense mechanisms to combat or escape mammalian predators. This made the parrot very vulnerable when new animals started showing up. The arrival of Polynesian peoples thousands of years ago, of Europeans in the 1800's, and ultimately the pets and livestock they brought with them resulted in the massive decline of Kakapo populations from hundreds of thousands to a mere handful of birds.
Once common throughout the three main islands of New Zealand, there are now approximately 62 Kakapo left. These remaining birds have been relocated to six predator free island habitats, where the birds are relatively safe and have been breeding! R.Bateman

Avian Diet
Tom Nemerovsky, 2005 This is the diet we have used in our aviary for over 22 years and it has served us very well. Quakers are prone to fatty liver disease and should not be fed any fatty foods . Foods that are high in sugar, fat or artificial colors and sweeteners in my opinion should not be fed to them. You are going to get some debate on the colors and sweeteners but they have been proven to cause allergic reactions in people and cancer in animals so why chance it. I have been feeding a 100% pellet diet to my birds for over 20 yrs and they thrive on it. If you want to modify this feed a good pellet (I feed Roudybush ) in the ratio of 80% pellets and 20% good choice treats like fruits and veggies. It is 20% of the TOTAL amount of food he gets in a day, so if he only eats aprx. 3 tblspns a day its not a very large amount of extras. Absolutely NO chocolate or avocado which are TOXIC. No apple seeds or pits from fruits like peaches, nectarines etc. these contain cyanide . I also will not feed grape seeds for the same reason (also debatable but its easy to remove the seeds). Secondly there is really too much sugar in grapes for birds the size of Quakers. Excess sugar will cause digestive problems which can lead to yeast infections and crop stasis (sour crop) and make you bird very ill.

But alas! even the Three, mighty though they were, could not last forever against an army which seemed to have no end. In one of the hottest scrimmages, when the enemy had broken a particularly wide hole through the fence, I saw Long Arrow's great figure topple and come down with a spear sticking in his broad chest. For another half-hour Bumpo and the Doctor fought on side by side. How their strength held out so long I cannot tell, for never a second were they given to get their breath or rest their arms. The Doctorthe quiet, kindly, peaceable, little Doctor!well, you wouldn't have known him if you had seen him that day dealing out whacks you could hear a mile off, walloping and swatting in all directions. As for Bumpo, with staring eye-balls and grim set teeth, he was a veritable demon. None dared come within yards of that wicked, wide-circling door-post. But a stone, skilfully thrown, struck him at last in the centre of the forehead. And down went the second of the Three. John Dolittle, the last of the Terribles, was left fighting alone. Jip and I rushed to his side and tried to take the places of the fallen ones. But, far too light and too small, we made but a poor exchange. Another length of the fence crashed down, and through the widened gap the Bag-jagderags poured in on us like a flood.

Foster Parrots, Ltd.
Sanctuary Birds Dolly has been a Foster Parrots resident since February of 2002. Her split lower beak is evidence of the intentions of someone in her past to keep her as a breeder. Beak splitting is a technique sometimes used to keep breeding birds from killing or seriously injuring their mates. Now 20 years old, Dolly had at least three guardians before coming to Foster Parrots. This gentle bird is extremely affectionate and is so closely bonded to Director Marc Johnson, she has actually laid eggs in his hands. She was personally adopted by Marc in November, 2002. Surrendered in October, 2002, by a biker from Boston, this Scarlet Macaw has no terrible story of abuse or deprivation to share. Psycho's story is perhaps the most typical. He was purchased as a baby by a man who learned, in time, that this was an extraordinarily intelligent and sensitive creature who needed far more than he was able to give. Now about 11 years old, Psycho is a spirited, active bird. The General and Mrs. B are two spectacular Military Macaws 17 and 14 years of age respectively. Originally purchased by former guardians for breeding; after selling two of their babies, the thought of wondering about the fate of the babies was too much to bear. The General and Mrs. B were surrendered to Foster Parrots in August, 2000. While the General puts on an impressive show of aggression, Mrs. B is by far the braver bird, being less intimidated by humans and more open to interaction. More or less "hands off" birds, they live comfortably in the upper barn; beautiful, dignified and worthy of great admiration.

Parrots as pets - Is a parrot a good pet for you ?
Author: MaryLou E. Fallo
Introduction
Let me start off by saying that parrots are not for everyone. The selection of any pet is an individual thing and every pet is not necessarily right for just anyone. Having said that let me tell you a little about myself and then about parrots as pets in general, so that you might know what to expect. I like animals, I have owned a pet shop and I dont't mind noises or cleaning. I have other pets and each is unique and special to me. I have kids and a hubby too "enough said"....
Things to Consider
  • Parrots are LOUD !
  • Can be destructive
  • Throw tantrums like little kids
  • Throw food
  • Require lots of cleaning and attention
  • Have a long lifespan
General Information
Don't get me wrong I love my birds. I'm just giving you some realistic facts to help you make a good decision. Remember many larger parrots like Macaws can live for up to 75 years. Your kids might move out at 18 but your Macaw will not, are you ready for that kind of commitment ? Smalller parrot family birds like Conures can live up to 30 years. I have a Blue Crested Sharp Tail counure named Albert and he is about 15 years old.
If I haven't scared you off yet, you might just be the right type of person to own a parrot. However I still would recommend doing some research. There are many different breeds of parrots and birds in general. You need to select the animal that will be most compatible to you and your family.

During the 1940's and 1950's, for example, laboratory researchers in Europe demonstrated that Grey parrots could learn the kinds of symbolic and conceptual tasks that are generally considered as pre- or co-requisites for complex cognitive and communicative skills (reviews in Pepperberg1,2). More recently, field studies have reported behaviors that, when observed in nonhuman primates, are considered as evidence for human-like intelligence. Such behaviors include cooperative alarm signaling ("sentinel behavior") in flocks of Indigo macaws (

Diana L. May Department of Psychology, Psychobiology Program University of Arizona Tucson, Arizona 85721 USA Excerpted from the Proceedings of the International Aviculturists Society, January 1996, Orlando, FL Introduction And Background Although such laboratory research has provided a wealth of evidence for captive Project Description Goals My study has two short-term goals: to assess the feasibility of a long-term field study of African Grey Parrot behavior and to collect preliminary information necessary for the design and implementation of ecotourism as a conservation strategy for African Grey Parrots. To achieve the first short-term goal, I am constructing an ethogram using videotapes of African Grey Parrot behavior; the ethogram will allow me to judge the feasibility of its use for long-term study in three ways. First, I will identify the amount and types of behavioral data that were collected. Second, I will create definitions of and guidelines for assigning behavioral elements that will provide the ethogram's underlying structure. Third, when the underlying structure is complete, I will test the ethogram's utility and inter-observer reliability. Achieving the second short-term goal will require some understanding of the natural history of African Grey Parrots. Knowledge of daily activities (e.g., where and when the parrots forage for food) and possible effects of human presence on African Grey Parrot behavior are important for the design and implementation of conservation practices. During my study, I collected some of this information in the form of written field notes and videotape; further anaylsis for the ethogram will provide even more information.
