We are an indoor aviary in sunny
St. Petersburg, Florida that specializes in African species. In spite of the beautiful climate here, our birds are bred in our brand new state of the art indoor facility that gives us maximum control over the health and well being of our flock. To this end, we also have specialized in only the African Species of parrots. Our Congo Greys pairs have been selected to produce robust, healthy babies that are psycologically stable. We try to avoid problem parents so that we can provide large healthy young and also we want to be able to hold back some of our most exceptional babies for our future breeding program. We enjoy them as our companions and introduce them to their future partners, as well as the other species we work with, while they are still sharing our home. This makes the transition a more natural one for them and allows us to continue to enjoy our former companions as adults. 25. Grey Parrot FAQ
FAQs should be read for general parrot (including Grey) care information. how many people think about African Greys and parrots in general.

The Grey Parrot FAQ
by Mike and Beth Holland
or
The African Grey Parrot has been called "the perfect mix of brains and beauty" (Bird Talk, Aug. 92) and the "cadillac of parrots" (Bird Talk Sept. 93). Much of the notoriety of this species stems from the phenomenal gift of speech members exhibit. While many parrots learn some words or phrases, many cases have been documented of African Greys learning multiple lines of songs, prayers, or plays. The Guinness Book of World Records lists the best talking parrot or parrot like bird as a African Grey named Prudle. Prudle was captured near Jinja, Uganda in 1958 and when "he" retired from public life in 1977 had a vocabulary of nearly 1000 words. Many owners have been surprised (and sometimes shocked) when their Grey learned a new word or phrase after hearing it only a few times. One of our favorite stories in this respect was one related by a priest that had a pet Grey. While hanging some pictures in his office, the priest hit his hand with a hammer. He let out a stream of obscenities that his Grey learned (from this one occurrence according to the priest). The priest's embarrassment was compounded by the other aspect of greys gift for mimicking, that is they often sound exactly like the person that spoke the words or phrase. Greys (the English spelling is usually used - not Gray) are not limited to imitating speech. Phones, microwaves ovens, answering machines, other birds and chain saws (in the African jungle) have all been documented as part of the Grey's repertoire. Many owners and some studies suggest that Greys (and other parrots) don't just mimic but can use words learned in new combinations to convey new wants, needs and desires. Alex, a famous Grey that has been studied for years by Dr. Irene Pepperberg, invented the term "long yellow" to express his desire for more corn on the cob. A European study found Greys to have the intellectual capacity of a 5-year-old human child with the emotional development of a human 2 year old (read as terrible two year old).

26. General Information About African Grey Parrots
There are two types of African grey parrots; some authorities consider them different general Information About African Grey parrots. Living with Greys
http://www.kookycongos.ca/afrgreyinfo.htm
African grey parrots: The African Grey Parrot, Psittacus erithacus , is the largest parrot found in Africa. Wild greys range throughout Central and Western Africa, and can be found in western sections of East African countries. They live in primary and secondary rainforest, forest edges and clearings. There are two types of African grey parrots; some authorities consider them different "races", others consider them sub-species, while still others classify them as different species. The Congo, P. e. erithacus , is the larger of the two birds, with bright red tail feathers and a black beak. Congos are generally characterized as slightly more intelligent, but also more high-strung than Timnehs. The Timneh, P. e. timneh , is smaller, its tail feathers are more of a maroon-grey mixture, and its beak includes tints of a reddish-beige color. These birds are characteristically less high-strung and more mellow than Congos. Some evidence indicates there may be a third sub-species

Welcome! To The Kooky Congos Website " ... if you tame me ... You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed .. ." - Antoine de Saint Exupery It also features some general information about parrots - their safe keeping, conservation and contacts to help you achieve both. Neither of us ever thought we'd be "bird people", never mind become part of a parrot/human flock. But Ann's allergies to cat and dog fur, our love for animals and fervent desire to have a pet(s), combined with some rather fortuitous circumstances changed all that, as you will find out if you explore this site further! This site contains a good mixture of silliness and seriousness. We hope you enjoy the pictures and the stories, as well as the information and essays about pet care and conservation.

Over the years I have enjoyed the company of many beautiful birds, and I added my personal experiences whenever applicable. Additionally, I've added a lot of links to related websites that provide pictures and information. Your experiences with any one of the species may vary. How happy you will be with your new pet (and vice versa - how happy your pet will be in its new home) very much depends on the level of socialization and individual personality of each bird, and how well it is matched to its home.

General Information on Pionus Parrots
by Jennie Bolton
These Items are reproduced with the kind permision, of the Vice-Chairman of
The Pionus Breeders Association
Pionus parrots are small to medium sized, slightly stocky birds from Central and South America. They are distinguished by large eyes with a bare eye ring, short tails, and a triangular patch of red feathers around the vent. Some are predominantly green with accents of white, plum or iridescent blue, while others are a riot of blue, violet, green, teal, bronze, even purple. There are seven species, five of which are common enough in captivity to be available as pets. Pionus are easy to keep, but, like African Grey parrots, had a reputation for developing aspergillosis infections due to unsanitary conditions encountered when large numbers of wild-caught birds were being imported. As with any other psittacine, cleanliness of the cage or aviary is important for these birds.

Eclectus Parrot PARROTS IN GENERAL: Parrots are gaily and boldly colored birds. Their plumage, which is evenly but thinly distributed over their bodies, consists of patches of solid color, often sharply contrasting one with another. All parrots share a number of distinctive features. The most obvious of these is the characteristic parrot bill which consists of a downward-curving and somewhat hooked upper mandible which fits neatly over a smaller, upward-curving lower mandible. The feet of parrots are also unusual. The two outer toes of the foot point backwards and grip in opposition to the two forward pointing inner toes. This provides them with an extremely powerful grasp, enabling them to hold and manipulate objects close to their bill. Most parrots are tree-dwellers, and they tend to be most plentiful in and around lowland tropical forests. They feed on fruits, especially wild figs, seed, nuts, berries, buds and blossoms. Parrots nest in holes, usually in trees, but sometimes among rocks or in termite mounds. The two to five white eggs hatch after about three weeks. The helpless young are fed by both parents on predigested food that is regurgitated. ECLECTUS PARROT Both sexes are glossy, brilliant birds, but the male is bright green with blue and red patches, while the female is crimson with a blue belly.
