Kern County, Parks and Recreation Department 1110 Golden State Avenue Bakersfield, CA 9330l For emergencies after 5 pm HISTORY By Minute Order dated April 4, 1952, and effective July 1, 1952, the Kern County Recreation and Cultural Commission was consolidated with the Kern County Parks Department, there by establishing the Kern County Parks and Recreation Department. At that time, there were 24 local parks, 2 golf courses, and 6 general parks maintained by a staff of 64 permanent employees. Currently, the Department administers 40 neighborhood parks, 8 regional parks, and performs landscape maintenance at 76 county buildings. Further, it administers use of 28 public buildings and the 3 county golf courses. A Current staff of 130 assumes these responsibilities. Herbert J. Evans was appointed as first director and served in that capacity until his death in 1968. Frank L. Stramler was appointed director in 1968, and retired in March 1989. Robert D. Established in 1972, as part of a trend to make national park resources more accessible to urban populations and bring “parks to the people”, GGNRA’s 75,398 acres of land and water extend north of the Golden Gate Bridge to Tomales Bay in Marin County and south to San Mateo County, encompassing 59 miles of bay and ocean shoreline. These lands represent one of the nation’s largest coastal preserves and attract 16 million visitors each year, making GGNRA one of the National Park Service most highly visited units. The park contains numerous historical and cultural resources, including Alcatraz, Marin Headlands, Nike Missile Site, Fort Mason, as well as Muir Woods National Monument, Fort Point National Historic Site, and the Presidio of San Francisco. These sites contain a variety of archeological sites, military forts and other historic structures which present a rich chronicle of two hundred years of history, including Native American culture, the Spanish Empire frontier, the Mexican Republic, evolution of American coastal fortifications, maritime history, 18th century and early 20th century agriculture, military history, California Gold Rush, Buffalo Soldiers, and the growth of urban San Francisco.
