America's National Parks
Three hundred and seventy-nine areas currently managed by the National Park Service are scattered throughout the United States. Only about 15 percent of these areas are officially designated national parks. Other areas are designated as national monuments, national seashores, national historic sites, national lakeshores, national battlefields, national historical parks, etc. Each area offers something special and worthwhile.
Many areas managed by the National Park Service have historical themes. For example, the homes of former presidents Hoover, Lincoln, Kennedy, Taft, Truman, Van Buren, F. Roosevelt, T. Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Johnson, and Carter are all part of the national park system. Likewise, many battlefields of the Revolutionary War and the Civil War are preserved and managed by the National Park Service. In the Plains and western United States, travelers should visit some of the historic forts that have been preserved. These include Fort Davis, Fort Laramie, Fort Scott, Fort Larned, and Bent's Old Fort. The National Park Service manages all of these areas. In general, the big and well-known natural areas are in the western United States, while the smaller, historical areas are in the eastern United States. Most national park areas charge an entrance fee. Some parks charge by the vehicle while other charge by the person. If you plan to visit several park areas during the year consider buying a Golden Eagle Passport that permits a year of unlimited visits to all the parks. The year begins on the day you purchase the pass. Special passes are available to seniors and the disabled. Inquire about any of these passes at a park entrance station or visitor center. The Golden Eagle Passport is available to anyone and can be purchased by mail but a Golden Age Passport for seniors or Golden Access Passport for the disabled must be purchased in person.

About Us Contact Us City Map This area has a rich historical past, mainly because of its location along the west shore of the waters of Green Bay. About 5000 years ago an archaic people, later called the Copper Culture, hunted, fished, and buried their dead on the banks of the Oconto River near the bay. The French Canadians came here in the 1600's to trade for the fur of beaver, muskrat and fox, canoeing by way of Mackinac and down the bay. Early settlers arrived by steam powered boats traveling on the Great Lakes. Of those, a Norwegian community grew on the bay shore and began fishing commercially, sending barrels of salted herring, whitefish, and trout to eastern markets. Beginning in the 1850's lumbering was the primary focus. Logs were floated down the Oconto River where they were sawed into lumber at one of seven mills in Oconto and shipped out by boat to large growing cities on Lake Michigan.

General Edmund Kriby Smith, C.S.A. Joseph H. Parks A native of St. Augustine, Florida, Kirby Smith was twice breveted for the bravery in the Mexican War. He spent the 1850s at various frontier posts and at the outbreak of the Civil war hurried to Confederate headquarters to offer his services. Soon he was a brigadier with Joseph E. Johnston in northern Virginia, and he is credited with playing a key role in the rout of the Union forces at first Manassas. In the spring of 1863 he assumed command of the vast Trans-Mississippi Department. At the fall of the Confederacy, Kirby Smith was the last general to surrender. He spent the final twenty years of his life as a teacher and died in Sewanee, Tennessee, in 1893, where he had been a professor at the University of the South. At the time of its origin publication in 1954, this book won the first Sydnor Memorial Award, given by the Southern Historical Association for the best book in southern history.
