About this project
What happens to the ribbon of land being created by the depression of the Central Artery may be the most important development decision to face Boston in a generation. Panel Recommendations A national panel of experts in governance, landscape architecture, and design offers recommendations on designing, building, and operating the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Go Residents dream big A pair of public forums dubbed "Community Conversations" resulted in dozens of innovative ideas for the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Check out stories, photos, and the ideas themselves. Go About the land The Central Artery land weaves nearly continuously from Chinatown to North Station, but its two dozen individual parcels differ considerably in character and potential use. Here's a look. Go Lessons from the world Boston is unique, but the issues involved in reclaiming Central Artery land are not. A series of MIT case studies looks at lessons from similar projects around the world. Go Timeline The first shots in the war over Central Artery land were fired in the 1980s. Where did the time go? Go Opinion Read the thoughts of key local players and some of the nation's leading experts on public policy and urban design.

FLOWER GARDENS AND PARKS IN B.C.
Vancouver area
Stanley Park No trip to Vancouver is complete without a trip to world famous Stanley Park. Perhaps Vancouver's most famous attraction, the park is packed with free things to do. Visitors who want peace and tranquility can find it along the myriad of walking trails. Start at Lost Lagoon and visit the nature house, then proceed around the Lagoon. You'll find geese, swans, and many other species of birds. The Stanley Park seawall is an ideal way to take in the view from all around the park. Visitors are welcome to walk, bike or rollerblade the 8.85 km (5.5 mile) wall. Cyclists and rollerbladers do need to proceed with caution and yield to pedestrians. In some areas, bladers and bikers are required to depart from the seawall and travel on roadways for a short distance. The park also features a number of beaches (Third, Second, English Bay) with lifeguards on duty in the summer months. Second Beach also features a pool with wash rooms and change rooms. A children's water park is located at Lumberman's Arch and a refreshment stand is close by. The Children's Farmyard and Miniature Railway (which have small admission fees) are located a short walk from the water park. A pitch and putt golf course is located near the Rhododendron Garden and the formal Rose Garden is located near the Stanley Park Pavilion. The park also has tennis courts, located near the Lost Lagoon Nature House.

New guidelines on confiscated animals
At the most recent Annual Conference of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) participants adopted guidelines on the acceptance of seized and confiscated animals. These Guidelines have now been promulgated to the entire constituency of the association. The new Guidelines promulgated by WAZA deal with the issue from the receiving institution’s perspective. They encourage zoos and aquariums to continue to support the efforts of their authorities by accepting to temporarily house, feed and care for seized animals. Confiscated animals may be accepted under a permanent loan agreement or as donations but only if the receiving institution has the necessary expertise and can ensure appropriate care and accommodation of the animals in the long term. A permanent loan agreement should also define the ownership of the offspring.

Species and Specimens: Exploring Local Biodiversity In this lesson, appropriate for middle through high school, students practice skills essential to all scientific investigation: carefully observing and collecting data. Students become field biologists in a series of hands-on activities to collect and identify specimens, and survey and calculate the diversity of plant species in their local environment. Home

Science Outreach Goals ... Fact Sheets
Learning goals: identifying and naming plants (recognizing variation in nature, using keys, identifying species); counting biodiversity (conducting research, collecting and comparing data) Key concepts and terms: biodiversity, taxonomist, binomial nomenclature, classification system, identification keys (dichotomous and interactive keys), species richness, introduced
(and invasive) species, endangered species, extinction

Background
Researchers exploring biodiversity (short for biological diversity) want to understand the variety of life. This includes the kinds and numbers of organisms on Earth, their genetic relationships, and their ecological roles (sometimes set apart as species diversity, genetic diversity, and ecological diversity). The first step in understanding biodiversity is to find out what organisms exist. The work of cataloging life on Earth is ancient, much older than the first rock paintings. Despite intensive exploration over hundreds of years, the total number of organisms present today is an educated guess. Only 1.5 million species have been identified and named. Anywhere between 14 and 100 million species may exist worldwide-it's difficult to estimate the unknown. Most of the undiscovered species are small, difficult to observe organisms: viruses, bacteria, fungi, algae, and invertebrates. Taxonomists have the large job of naming organisms according to the rules of binomial nomenclature and classifying them.
