82. Idaho Observer: Michael J. Fox Foundation: Parkinson's Research Fraud?
Last spring actor Michael J. Fox, a victim of Parkinson s disease, announced that diet Pepsi contains the FDAapproved artificial sweetener aspartame.
http://proliberty.com/observer/20000914.htm
From the September 2000 Idaho Observer: Michael J. Fox Foundation: Parkinson's research fraud? By Don Harkins Diet Pepsi contains the FDA-approved artificial sweetener aspartame. Aspartame is an extremely volatile substance that, under ordinary storage conditions, breaks down quickly into methanol, a known neurotoxin. The methanol then breaks down into formaldehyde. The FDA has never established a safe level of formaldehyde that can be consumed by humans. The path aspartame has taken to participate in Fox's degeneration is very complex, yet supported by peer-reviewed science. In essence, aspartame inhibits the body's ability to produce dopamine. Dopamine is essential for the proper functioning of the brain which in turn controls the body's many systems. At the MJFF website it is listed that one of the companies the foundation is funding for Parkinson's research is Somerset Pharmaceuticals, the company that produces Eldepryl, or selegeline hydrochloride. Eldepryl, another FDA-approved drug, was found by the U.S. Pharmacological Conference to be contaminated with methamphetamine and a publicly unidentified neurotoxin. Annetta Freeman of Hollywood, California, was a Parkinson's victim confined to a wheelchair who was continuing to deteriorate while using Eldepryl. She got off Eldepryl and began taking Liquid Deprenyl Citrate (LDC), a clean selegeline developed by Jay Kimball of Discovery Experimental and Development, Inc. (DEDI). Today Freeman, 64, is leading an active and productive life as an advocate for Parkinson's victims and LDC.

Michael J. Fox is still drinking the diet soda.
Many medical professionals and health activists loudly proclaim that aspartame sweetener in diet sodas causes symptoms that mimic, or accentuate Parkinson's disease. The first class-action lawsuits have already been filed. Michael is diagnosed with Parkinson's.

A prudent person might well have long ago eliminated the notorious additive from their diet. But, incredibly, Michael J. Fox seems to still be drinking the soda.
Before he appeared on last week's Oprah show, promoting his new book "Lucky Man," reporter Ann Oldenburg, for USA Today, interviewed him about his medical condition. She wrote

    Parkinson's Disease
Attribution Parkinson's disease is a progressive disorder caused by degeneration of nerve cells in the part of the brain that controls movement. What is going on in the body? Parkinson's disease involves a breakdown of the nerve cells in the motor area of the brain. As the cells break down, there is a shortage of dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, or chemical that carries messages to the body. When there is a shortage of dopamine, the messages that regulate movement aren't sent properly. What are the causes and risks of the disease? The cause of Parkinson's disease is not known. There may be a hereditary tendency to the disease that is worsened by factors in the environment. Some people with Parkinson's disease have an abnormality on chromosome 4.

    http://www.reutershealth.com/wellconnected/doc51.html
Parkinson's Disease March 2002 WHAT IS PARKINSON'S DISEASE AND WHAT CAUSES IT? Parkinson's disease (PD) is a slowly progressive disorder that affects movement, muscle control, and balance. Parkinson's disease is referred to as idiopathic , which means that the cause is unknown. This term distinguishes the primary disease from parkinsonism , which are the symptoms occurring from a known cause. Parkinson's Disease and Dopamine Loss Parkinson's disease occurs from the following process in the brain:
    • PD develops as cells are destroyed in certain parts of the brain stem, particularly the crescent-shaped cell mass known as the substantia nigra
    • Nerve cells in the substantia nigra send out fibers to the corpus stratia , gray and white bands of tissue located in both sides of the brain.
    • There the cells release dopamine , an essential neurotransmitter (a chemical messenger in the brain). Loss of dopamine in the corpus stratia is the primary defect in Parkinson's disease.
    • Dopamine is one of three major neurotransmitters known as catecholamines , which help the body respond to stress and prepare it for the fight-or-flight response. Loss of dopamine negatively affects the nerves and muscles controlling movement and coordination, resulting in the major symptoms characteristic of Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's Disease: Nutrition Just For You
By Kathrynne Holden, MS, RD Dear Dietitian: What diet should I follow for PD? One of the tasks I most enjoy is responding to questions on the e-mail forum "Ask the Parkinson Dietitian." The question most often asked by newcomers to the forum is: "I have PD what's the best diet for me?" That's a very good question. However, PD is so different for each person that there is no one right diet for everyone. The best possible diet for people with PD depends on a great many matters that can affect your nutrient needs. Here are just a few:
    • Age
    • Gender
    • If female, whether pre- or post-menopausal
    • How long diagnosed with PD
    • Medications used (both PD, and other medications, including over-the-counter medications, vitamins, herbal or other supplements)
    • Other diagnosed conditions besides PD (such as elevated blood pressure, food allergies, diabetes, heartburn, acid reflux, high cholesterol, etc.)
    • Particular concerns such as nausea, edema, constipation, weight change, etc.
