Introduction
Parkinson's disease may be one of the most baffling and complex of the neurological disorders. Its cause remains a mystery but research in this area is active, with new and intriguing findings constantly being reported. Parkinson's disease was first described in 1817 by James Parkinson, a British physician who published a paper on what he called "the shaking palsy." In this paper, he set forth the major symptoms of the disease that would later bear his name. For the next century and a half, scientists pursued the causes and treatment of the disease. They defined its range of symptoms, distribution among the population, and prospects for cure.

Rigidity is an increased tone or stiffness in the muscles. Tremoring is the symptom the public most often identifies with, but in fact, up to 25% of patients experience very slight tremor or none at all. When it is present, the tremor may be worse on one side of the body. Besides affecting the limbs, it sometimes involves the head, neck, face, and jaw. Slowness of movement is characterized by a delay in initiating movements, caused by the brain's slowness in transmitting the necessary instructions to the appropriate parts of the body. When the instructions have been received, the body responds slowly in carrying them out.
Poor balance tends to accompany this disease, particularly if moving abruptly, which causes a sudden change in the position of one's body. Walking problems commonly include a decreased or nonexistent arm swing; short, shuffling steps, difficulty in negotiating turns, and sudden freezing spells (inability to take the next step). Some people with Parkinson's may also suffer from any of a long list of secondary symptoms. These include depression, sleep disturbances, dizziness, stooped posture, constipation, dementia, and problems with speech, breathing, swallowing, and sexual function. Again, not all people will experience any or all of the symptoms mentioned.

They defined its range of symptoms, distribution among the population, and prospects for cure. In the early 1960s, researchers identified a fundamental brain defect that is a hallmark of the disease: the loss of brain cells that produce a chemical dopamine that helps direct muscle activity. This discovery pointed to the first successful treatment for Parkinson's disease and suggested ways of devising new and even more effective therapies. Society pays an enormous price for Parkinson's disease. According to the National Parkinson Foundation, each patient spends an average of $2,500 a year for medications. After factoring in office visits, Social Security payments, nursing home expenditures, and lost income, the total cost to the Nation is estimated to exceed $5.6 billion annually.

Central Nervous System Parkinson's disease was first described in England in 1817 by Dr. James Parkinson. The disease affects approximately 2 of every 1,000 people and most often develops after age 50. Sometimes Parkinson's disease occurs in younger adults and is rarely seen in children. It affects both men and women and is one of the most common neurologic disorders of the elderly. In some cases the disease occurs within families, especially when it affects young people. Most late onset cases have no known cause. The term "parkinsonism" refers to any condition that involves a combination of the types of changes in movement seen in Parkinson's disease, which is the most common cause of these symptoms. Parkinsonism may be caused by other disorders or by external factors (

A good balanced diet always leads to a healthy life. People suffering from parkinsons disease need to have have a controlled diet. A controlled diet provides you the energy to work poperly, gives you more energy and your medication will be more beneficial. Following are some suggestions for the PD patient to help maintain proper nutrition : 1. Weight control is very important for people with parkinsons disease. Every extra pound means more work and more trouble for your muscles. Even the weight loss should be monitored which can be a sign of poor nutrition. 2. Eat a daily diet that has a balance of all four food groups, including two to three servings from the meat group, four to five from the fruit and vegetable group, two to three from the milk group, and at least six from the bread and cereal group. 3. Surgical Treatment Research is going on in which dopamine-producing tissue is transplanted into the brains of people with Parkinson's disease. There have also been attempts to transplant growth-factor-producing cells into the brain to regrow damaged dopamine-producing nerve cells. These approaches are strictly experimental right now but these exciting prospects hold strong promise for the future. Exercise Regular exercise is essential for keeping you strong and flexible. You must do excersices that gets your muscles moving, your heart pumping, and that you can keep up with it every day. Walking, jogging, stretching, swimming are some of the best ways to help you cope with the diseases such as tremor, muscle stiffness, and slow movements that may occur with Parkinson's disease. Daily exercise routine will help you to feel better about yourself and your condition, continue functioning, maintain a good body weight, and sleep better at night. Make sure to ask your doctor first about how to get started. Diet Correct diet plan also has a major role to play in parkinsons diesease. In the early stages of Parkinson's disease, people may gain weight because they are less active than they used to be. Some people may eat more because they feel depressed about their medical condition.Weight control is very important in parkinsons diesase people. For these reasons, and the effect of different kinds of food on your medication, you should carefully control your diet. Consult your doctor for the right diet plan.

How to Treat Parkinson's Disease
There is good news today for the 1.5 million people who suffer from Parkinson's disease - a chronic brain condition that affects the muscles and can cause weakness and coordination problems. Progressive treatments enable many victims to continue to function on a high level. Steps: Ask your doctor about taking Levodopa (or a generic version of this anti-Parkinson's drug) to control the symptoms. Understand that this medication is converted by the brain into dopamine, which is a chemical that is reduced in Parkinson's patients and is necessary to send signals to the muscles for them to function correctly. Find out about taking Levodopa along with a second drug called cadbidopa. Cadbidopa increases the effectiveness of the Levodopa and also helps to minimize nausea, which is a common side effect. Ask about other antiviral drug options that can help to reverse the effects of Parkinson's.

Parkinson's disease, while most prevalent in the elderly, strikes young and old alike. About 20% of all diagnosis are made in people under 50. These cases are known as Young Onset or Early Onset. They face a different set of issues physically and medically than older people with Parkinson's. For more information on Young Onset Parkinson's disease, visit www.youngparkinsons.org or www.yopa.org
Treatment of PD consists of drugs, physical therapy, diet and occasionally surgery. Although medication may reduce the symptoms, the disease will progress. Drugs in combination with diet and exercise help lessen the severity of PD and will enable the Parkinsonian to remain active longer.
While there is at present no cure for PD, the future is bright. With increased public awareness and continued research into exciting new medical areas, we are confident there will be a cure in our lifetime. For more information on Parkinson's disease, please visit the following websites:

Parkinson's Disease
by Dr. Rita Louise There has been much talk in the news lately about Parkinson's disease, after it was discovered that Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with this disorder. Parkinson's disease is characterized by tremors of the hands, chin or lips, with other symptoms including stiffness of movement, a shuffling walk and difficulties in performing simple tasks. Parkinson's disease is a slowly progressive disorder where small groups of nerves cells in the mid-brain degenerate. In health these cells release an essential neurotransmitter called dopamine. As the production of dopamine diminishes, information transmitted on these neural pathways becomes distorted and garbled, thus creating the characteristic symptoms.

Live to Eat and Eat to Live
Eat right. Watch your waistline. Exercise. Over and over, we have heard these seemingly simple words of advice. But is it really that simple? Eating healthy is a challenge for everyone, but it is especially critical to the well-being of a person with PD. A regular exercise regimen and a healthy diet, customized to meet individualized needs, are key components of any comprehensive treatment plan for PD. The following information will help in understanding how nutrition and swallowing "feed" into PD.
Factors Contributing to Malnutrition
  • Nausea Constipation Loss of taste, sense of smell, and/or appetite Unplanned weight loss Depression Difficulty swallowing Choking
Risks of Malnutrition
Bone Fracture
Malnutrition, weight loss, and the higher incidence of falling associated with PD all contribute to the possibility of bone fractures. To decrease the likelihood of bone fractures, incorporate bone strengthening nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, and vitamins D and K into your diet.
Dehydration
People with PD are at risk of being dehydrated. Dehydration can lead to confusion, weakness, respiratory failure, and kidney failure. To avoid dehydration, make sure to drink plenty of fluids. Carry a water bottle with you at all times. If you have problems with incontinence, hydrate earlier in the day rather than later in the evening.

Smoothing Out the Tremors I t's like going from automatic to manual. That description of Parkinson's disease, from someone who has had firsthand experience, sums it up neatly. As this disease of the central nervous system progresses, movements that were once second nature, such as walking and writing, take on a ponderous and deliberate quality. And hand tremors can complicate simple tasks such as buttoning clothes. Frequently, it's tremors that send people to their doctors for diagnosis, but most people with the disease can recall years of vague symptoms before doctors pinpointed the cause. "I was very slow and sluggish; I just didn't have the old pizzazz. But I didn't know if it was normal old age or not," explains Michael Locoputa, a retired electronics specialist from Syracuse, New York, who has had Parkinson's disease for about ten years.
