The African explorer Gerhard Rohlfs made a total of ten journeys between 1861 and 1885. Today his name may not be as familiar as those of his more famous colleagues Mungo Park, David Livingstone or Heinrich Barth and Gustav Nachtigall. In his own century, however, Gerhard Rohlfs was known as an adventurer, explorer and finally as envoy of the German Emperor on Zanzibar. In his book Rainer-K. Langner fascinates the reader by his ability to combine Rohlfs’ life with an account of scientific practice and of the European view of the African continent. In those days there were still blank spots on the map of Africa, and many parts of the Sahara were unknown and mysterious to Europeans. The thought that North African peoples like the Tuareg, the Berbers or the numerous Arab tribes could have already uncovered these secrets centuries before, did not even occur to the self-confident Europeans with their belief in progress. Sustained by an unchallenged sense of superiority, an enterprising leader of an expedition like Gerhard Rohlfs, provided with sufficient financial resources, could become an “African explorer” without the least geographical or geological education.

ROAD TO TIMBUKTU EPISODE
It is perhaps surprising that a place as comparatively close to Europe as West Africa should remain more or less unknown long after the colonization of the Americas. Indeed, it was not until 1828 that the first European saw Timbuktu and lived to tell the tale. This long isolation was due to many factors: the trackless wastes of the Sahara, the long distances from the coast to the Niger River fraught with danger and disease, and the desert and coastal peoples who preferred to maintain their exclusive position as trade middlemen between the Niger and the outer world. But this is no excuse for continuing near-ignorance in America and Europe of the fabulous history of the Middle Niger Valley in the modern Republic of Mali. As early as 872 A.D. the Arab geographer al-Ya'kubi would write of the ancient state of Ghana (situated in part in the Middle Niger Valley) stating that it possessed a powerful king, with many lesser kings and kingdoms owing their allegiance to him, and that this king of kings controlled his country's mines of gold. Arab and Berber traders were already taking advantage of a profitable trade with the Empire of Ghana by the 9th century A.D., and were to continue to do so for centuries to come (see the Tuareg ). However, to the western world, this land remained a mystery.

Mungo Park was a 23 year-old scottish surgeon surgeon who had just returned from a journey to Sumatra on a ship of the East India Company. There he had discovered 6 species of fish, he had published descriptions in a Scientific Journal. In 1795, Park had gone to Piscina, on an offer to research further into Africa. Park had accepted and a severe fever overcame him during his journey. Park also had been captured by certain muslim leaders. After he had got out of the Prison he had wandered around and had finally found the Niger River. Park was amazed at how beautiful the River was. Park had stated "I saw with infinite pleasure, the object of my, mission". Park had returned home to London where became famous on his publications of his voyage across Africa. Later in 1806 he sailed downstream to the Bussa rapids, where he drowned, trying to escape an attack by the Africans. Rene Callie was a 27 year old man who was fascinated by the stories told about peoples travels to Africa. His readings of Mungo park also stimulated his fascination. Callie had entered a contest for the first person to reach Timbuktu and reach back. He had reached Timbuktu. During Callie's trip he did not find it easy to prove to the French Authorities that a young man with no experience could discover Timbuktu. On his way back Callie had joined a Arab Caravan preparing to cross from Western Sahara to Morocco. Callie had stated "I am the first European to cross from the sandy ocean from the south to the north". On his return to Paris, Callie was known as a hero. Later, questions were asked if he was telling the truth or not.

ALBUQUERQUE, AFONSO DE Afonso de Albuquerque (14-1515) was a Portuguese soldier and explorer who sailed to the Spice Islands (the Moluccas, a group of Islands in Indonesia) in 1507-1511, trying to monopolize trade with this area; from Europe, he sailed around Africa to the Indian Ocean. He was appointed the Viceroy of India by King Emmanuel in 1509. He forcibly destroyed the Indian city of Calicut in January, 1510, and took Goa (in southern India) in March, 1510, claiming Goa for Portugal. BATTUTA, ABU ABDULLAH IBN Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Battuta [also spelled Buttuta] (1303-1365), was a Moroccan explorer who traveled through Africa, the Middle East, and parts of the Far East. A Muslim, he set off on a Hajj (a pilgrimage to the holy town of Mecca) from Tangier, Africa, in 1325 and traveled for almost three decades, covering over 75,000 miles (120,700 km) by boat and over land. He did sail his own boat, but was a passenger on many trading boats. In India, Buttuta was appointed a Magistrate of Delhi (1334-1341). He also traveled to China, Sri Lanka, Sumatra, and much of Africa. Buttuta later recorded his adventures in a popular book, "Travels (Rihala) of Ibn Battuta." He died in Fez, Morocco, in 1365.

ANZA, JUAN BAUTISTA DE
Captain Juan Bautista de Anza (1736-1788) was a Mexican-born trailblazer and explorer. He was the first person of European descent to establish an overland trail from Mexico to the northern Pacific coast of California (then called New Albion). He found a corridor through the desolate Sonoran Desert. His expeditions brought hundreds of settlers to California. He founded the cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Jose. De Anza was the commander of the presidio at Tubac. BERING, VITUS J. Vitus Jonassen Bering (1681-1741) was a Danish explorer and navigator who explored the seas off Alaska and northeastern Siberia. Bering was a sublieutenant in the fleet of Tsar Peter I the Great of Russia. From 1725-1730, Bering led an expedition to determine whether or not Asia and North America were connected by a land bridge. Bering sailed through what is now known as the Bering Strait, finding a sea route around Siberia to China. He concluded that Asia and North America were not connected (although he did not actually see North America due to fog).

Sir Samuel White Baker

Sir Richard Francis Burton
Mary Henrietta Kingsley Mungo Park Sir Samuel White Baker Sir Samuel White Baker (1821-1893), was an English explorer of Africa. He became known as an expert on Egypt and Sudan chiefly through his two books, The Albert N'yanza, Great Basin of the Nile (1866) and The Nile Tributaries of Abyssinia (1867). He also wrote popular books on hunting and nature. Baker was born in London. During the late 1850's and early 1860's, he and Florence von Sass, whom he later married, explored the region of the White Nile, the Blue Nile, and the Atbara River in Africa. On March 14, 1864, Baker and his party found a great lake. The lake, which he named Albert Nyanza (now also called Lake Albert), lies between Uganda and Congo (Kinshasa) and is an important source of the Nile River. Baker was knighted in 1866. In 1869, Ismail Pasha, the ruler of Egypt, appointed him as governor general of Sudan, which was then controlled by Egypt. Ismail told Baker to eliminate the slave trade. Baker added new territory in Sudan for Egypt and defeated some prominent slave traders but failed to stop the slave trade. He returned to England in 1873.

Africa
By the late 1700's, Europeans were familiar with the coasts of Africa, but the interior of the continent remained a mystery to them. Penetration of the interior was difficult because of the harsh terrain in many places and the presence of deadly diseases, such as malaria and dysentery. Despite these obstacles, Europeans explored most of Africa south of the Sahara during the late 1700's and the 1800's. During the late 1800's, exploration was combined with conquest, and Europeans became the rulers of most of the African continent.
During the late 1700's and early 1800's, European explorers tried to solve a mystery that had puzzled geographers for centuries. Ancient writers had mentioned an important African river called the Niger. But they had not known where the river began, in what direction it flowed, and where it ended. In 1796, Mungo Park, a Scottish explorer, reached the Niger near Segou, in what is now Mali. He determined that it flows from west to east. In 1830, Richard Lemon Lander, a British explorer, sailed down the Niger to its mouth in the Gulf of Guinea. During the 1820's, Alexander Gordon Laing, a Scottish explorer, and Rene Caillie (ruh NAY cah YAY), a Frenchman, separately visited the city of Timbuktu, near the Niger in Mali.

SUMMARY
The decision of a men's discussion society meeting in London in 1788 to promote the investigation and exploration of West Africa was principally one of intellectual curiosity on the part of the members. over the next forty years however, it led to the opening of this enormous and hidden area of the world as well as setting the foundation for the commercial and military domination of this part of Africa by the British and French empires. This was accomplished at little cost to the involved governments but at a terrible price paid by the ill-equipped vainglorious young men sent out by these armchair dilettantes.
