Entering first grade without his sister was an experience Nicholas was not prepared to deal with — he missed his sister so much he cried constantly during the first six weeks of school. "They really needed to be together. They really relied on each other to get through those situations," Wendy Haavisto told a House committee during a hearing Tuesday on a bill that would give parents a greater say in classroom placement of twins and other multiple-birth children. Last month, the Senate unanimously approved the bill obligating schools to abide by the parents' wishes. If the bill's positive reception in the House Education Policy and Reform Committee is an indicator, the bill will sail through the House. The issue is about "the rights of parents to do what we believe is best for our children," said Blane Huppert of Woodbury, who has bumped heads repeatedly with the principal at Zachary and Xavier Huppert's school about placing the identical twins in the same kindergarten classroom.
