Q . What is the best way to teach safety awareness to young children? A . The best way is to follow your instincts. It is a natural process. You, your parents, your brothers and sisters, any other close members of your family, and your friends provide just the right input. You are your child’s first and most important teacher. You, your family, and your friends form for your child his or her first and most important social group. Your parent-child relationship is the main model; and you, your relatives, and your friends make up your child’s training ground for all future relationships.

Peaceful Parenting Tips
Positive parenting means that we teach and guide our children. Because every child is different, this means that we need many parenting strategies in order to be effective. Try some of these tips to help guide and teach your children:
Use "I statements"

Tell your children how you feel and what you expect from them. For example:
"Jake, I feel frustrated when you leave your toys all over the floor, and I need you to pick them up and put them away before dinner time."
Pick your battles
Sometimes we are our own worst enemy! Before taking on a conflict with your kids, decide if it is really worth the time and energy you're putting into it. If they want to wear mismatched clothes to school, will it hurt them or someone else? Find a way to let the small things go, so that you don't run out of energy when the important issues come up.
Use consequences
Natural consequences, taking away privileges, and firm family rules are excellent ways to manage behavior without yelling or hitting. Many of us need to learn these techniques from someone else, since they don't often come naturally. Take parenting classes, ask other parents who you respect, and read parenting books to get ideas that will work for your family.

  • Listen to your child, really listen. Listen to what he/she is saying. Respond back to what has been asked. Show interest. Our time is limited on this earth. The dance we do is extremely short. Enjoy every moment you have with your child, even if it is a homework assignment or project they bring home to do, or perhaps a sunset that you may watch together. Do something that you may hate, that they enjoy. Find out what your child really enjoys as they grow, and make time for them, for what they like. Teach your children about many religions, not just the one you practice. This teaches tolerance of those different than them. Look in the mirror at your dark side; the baggage you carry from role modeling you received growing up. Do you stereotype, do you have racist feelings, or judge other cultures? Recognize this potential and work on change. This will take time and effort, but as a parent, it is important to overcome these old drivers in order to teach your children to be better and ultimately healthier human beings. Provide your children a variety of experiences. Allow them to engage in many different activities. There are many creative ways to expose your child to music, literature, the arts, science and nature, without spending a lot of money.

There are two matters you may want to consider in your decision. What lessons do you want to teach your child about spending money? For example, if it is important for you to teach your child that they have to work for things that are considered luxuries (such as expensive clothing) then you may want them to pay part or all of the clothing cost. If they have to spend their allowance money or do extra chores for the clothing, they may learn to appreciate the clothes more. This issue really provides you with an ideal teaching opportunity around work ethic, values, and money. How do you feel about the type of clothing they want to buy? There are many different clothing styles on the market today, and you need to investigate the type of clothing to see if you feel the style is appropriate for your child's age and body type. Go to the store with your child, and use those moments in the store to explain your values and views. Your child needs to know that just because the style may be popular, it may not be appropriate for them because it is too tight or too revealing. Once again, you have an opportunity to teach your child about clothing and what images they are portraying by what they wear.

Positive Parenting Tips There is no doubt about it-being a good parent is hard work, but it can be tremendously rewarding and fun as well. And, like any job, you can also learn to do it better. In conjunction with April being Child Abuse Prevention Month and as part of its ongoing effort to improve the lives of children and families in Wisconsin, Children's Service Society of Wisconsin (CSSW) has compiled a brochure with tips on how to be a more positive parent. The following are some positive parenting tips CSSW offers: Learn about normal child development - Learning more about your kids will help you have realistic expectations. Kids are able to do different things at different ages, and sometimes parents expect too much or too little. Knowing the different developmental stages can help you know that what you are asking kids to do is realistic. Positive Reinforcement - Give praise for the little things as well as the big things kids do. Make it genuine-that's the best kind! Kids of all ages feel better about themselves when they know they have done the right thing. "Try this," sounds a lot better than "Don't do that." Consistency - In the long run, everyone in a family is happier with some basic rules. When kids know what you expect, they don't have to guess what the rules are. Make the rules simple, few, reasonable and consistent. Be sure to follow through, even when they fuss.

Biters: Why It Happens And What To Do About It
Although one out of ten toddlers engages in biting behaviors, it is a disturbing and potentially harmful behavior that caregivers must discourage from the very first episode. It is common for children to bite others while playing. Although the child may be unaware of the pain that they have caused, it may be very painful to the child who is bitten. Biting often leads to greater fighting within the play group and the biter also runs the risk of becoming unpopular with their playmates.
If a child bites, remain calm and think about what the child was doing just before the incident. Understanding why young children bite can help you deter this aggressive behavior and teach the child positive ways to handle their feelings. Young children bite for different reasons, and not all will respond to the same types of interventions. Identifying the type of biter that you have will help you develop an appropriate discipline technique.
    • The Experimental Biter: An infant or young child may bite their parents or anyone else who is around them. This biter may be motivated by teething pain or by simply wanting to touch, smell and taste other people in order to learn more about their world.

Susan H. Turben, Ph.D. is a pioneer in the early intervention field, receiving her first grant for the Handicapped Children Early Education Program (HCEEP) in 1974. She started the first infant stimulation program in the capital district of New York State, replicating Dr. Ira Gordon's work at the University of Florida (Baby Learning through Baby Play) and Dr. Betty Caldwell's Syracuse University training model, which trained paraprofessionals to work with disadvantaged parents and infants in both school and home settings. Dr. Susan Turben is a child development expert.
Between 1974 and 1984, Dr. Turben designed and implemented seven different programs designed to serve families with infants and toddlers, including programs which have received continuous federal, state, and local funds. She created the Stepping Stones Home Visitation and Curriculum Project, Albany, New York; the United Labor Agency Branching Out Preschool and After-School Program, Painesville, Ohio; and a Prevention-Intervention Program model each representing a "first" in the field of early education and intervention.
In 1989, Dr. Turben received funding that enabled the Cleveland Sight Center to initiate the first large-scale, family-centered Children's Services program in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Turben worked for the Lake County Early Intervention Collaborative Group in 1988-89 as the consultant who prepared the County Needs Assessment and assisted the Collaborative in the preparation of the 1988-89 Lake County Early Intervention Collaborative Plan, which launched family collaboratives as a network of families with children who had disabilities.

    Question:
How can I explain to my 4 year old why her grandparents eat meat? She is really confused. How can we make her understand that it's not alright for her to eat animals but it is for her grandparents?
    Answer:
Part of teaching our children what it means to be vegan is teaching them that they live primarily in a non-vegan world. In fact, many parents feel lucky if they know even one other vegan family! As we go through life learning to negotiate the twists and turns of diet diplomacy, we hopefully pick up somewhere along the way the fact that we simply cannot change everyoneno matter how strongly we believe in what we're doing. We must live by example, first and foremost.

TIP Teach children safety skills. TOOL Play, "What would you do if . . .?" Background: Accidents are the leading cause of death for children ages one to fourteen. Knowing what to do when injured can dramatically increase a child's chance for recovery. Further, children (and teens) who know first aid skills are less likely to take risks that end with injury. THREE WAYS YOU CAN ENCOURAGE SAFETY SKILLS ARE:
  • Model thinking and acting safely. Children learn more from what you do than what you say. When you want your child to wear a life vest, model wearing one yourself. Talk aloud as you make safety decisions. For example, "Oh, darn. The bread is stuck in the toaster. If I use the fork to pull it out, I could get an electric shock. I had better unplug the toaster first."
