The family is the oldest and most fundamental of human institutions. The conjugal, elementary, or nuclear family exists in known societies. The family has been subjected to enormous pressures as human cultures have changed from a rural to an urbanized, industrial orientation. These changes have altered the aspirations of "family", but have not greatly diminished the desire for entering into intimate relationships. All modern family units do not include children, although it is still the norm. The following links provide "safe areas" for children on the Net and an array of resources for parents. Launched in March of 2001, the Center for Sports Parenting (CSP) is a Web-based initiative that offers immediate and practical guidance to parents, coaches, educators, administrators, officials, and all other individuals involved in youth sports, equipping them with the information needed to handle the psychological and physical challenges faced by young people participating in athletics.
Chaired by Rick Wolff, nationally-recognized sports parenting and performance enhancement expert, the CSP Web site offers personalized advice from a panel of more than 25 respected experts in the fields of sports psychology, coaching, health, nutrition, and sports medicine; gives users access to CSP research based on the latest psychological trends in the area of sports parenting, with special emphasis on communication, motivation, and athletic development; and serves as a forum for people to speak out on sports parenting-related issues.
The CSP was founded to meet two pressing needs for parents of young athletes. First, to provide immediate, practical assistance for parents, coaches, educators, administrators, officials, referees, umpires and all other individuals involved in youth sports; and second, CSP is committed to researching the latest practices in the area of sports parenting, with special emphasis on coaching, communication, motivation and athletic development.

Parenting in the Home Office
by Ann Douglas When my husband and I launched our home-based business a few years back, the local newspaper sent a reporter over to take a picture of my partner and I spending "quality time" in our home office with our three preschoolers. It was a lovely photo: the kids looked like model children, we looked like model parents, and the office was so tidy that it looked like - you guessed it! - a model home office! But it was all a big charade. Underneath the desk were laundry baskets full of clutter, and Neil and I were actually smiling through clenched teeth as we tried to cajole our three active offspring into simultaneously co-operating for the photographer. ("Leave the keyboard alone, Scott. Julie, put your gum back in your mouth. Erik, sit still while the photographer takes our picture.") As anyone who has tried to run a business from home can tell you, there is a downside to having both a family and a home-based business. Most people find it's a constant struggle to try to balance the needs of the family with the needs of the business.

Why we don't hit our kids
I don't recall ever being hit when I was a child, and I know that Linda was never hit or spanked as a child either. For us, the very idea of hitting a child has a sense of wrongness, of unfairly taking advantage of our physical superiority. As a result, one of the tenets of how we're raising our three children is no hitting Now I'll be candid, because not hitting them doesn't mean that sometimes we don't want to hit them. When they've been temporarily replaced by strange alien monsters who are beyond reason and horrible little humans, torturing each other, hurting our animals, or deliberately provoking us, well, let's just say that sometimes not hitting takes a lot of self-discipline! This also doesn't mean that our children don't hit each other and don't, on occasion, hit us. Ah, I'd love to imagine what it would be like to live in a completely peaceful household, but then again, without the difficulties of anger and frustration we wouldn't be able to also experience - and enjoy - the highs of joy and delight either... While we live in a small pocket of Colorado where the norm is to not hit children, I believe our society overall still works with the rules of the jungle:
