EDUCATION IN PARAPSYCHOLOGY
Lloyd Auerbach, MS
Director, The Office of Paranormal Investigations

There are a couple of questions my colleagues and I are often asked about Parapsychology. First of all, where can one take courses in parapsychology, and secondly, where can one earn a degree in parapsychology so as to enter the field? Both questions are a bit limited in the way they can be answered, since the resources and support of this field are severely limited. The American Society for Psychical Research ( www.aspr.com or call 212-799-5050) has occasionally published new editions of its Courses and Other Study Opportunities in Parapsychology, which lists a wide variety of courses that have been offered in the past (and are hopefully still being offered) for credit in and out of the United States. In addition, it offers some suggestion for graduate work in parapsychology, which I'll get to in a moment. The course list is by no means complete, in that it has always been limited to those courses the folks at the ASPR hear of, either from the instructors or some second-hand source. In addition, the updates are further limited by who responds to queries (whether the courses were still being offered). There have been a few dozen colleges and universities listed that offer courses (generally only one) for credit throughout the U.S., though undoubtedly there are many more. Other schools offer extension or continuing education courses, and there are countless local adult education programs running courses in psychic related topics.

    RESEARCH IN PARAPSYCHOLOGY
How Much Research Has Actually Been Done in Parapsychology During the Last 100 years?
Critics sometimes love to argue that 100 years of research in parapsychology has failed to produce a reliable demonstration of ESP. But how much research has really been done during this period?
Text extract from original text: "ARE WE MAKING PROGRESS?" by Sybo A. Schouten, University of Utrecht, Parapsychology Foundation, 1988. Since a simple experiment can never constitute a reliable demonstration, they mean in fact that 100 years of research have failed to yield the knowledge to enable us to control the phenomena and to demonstrate ESP at will. This is correct, but this applies to many findings in psychology as well. Moreover, the "100 years" sounds very suggestive but does not take into account on how much research capacity this supposed 'failure' is based.

Proponents of the existence of these phenomena usually consider them to be a product of unexplained mental abilities.

Psychology Areas Cognition Development Clinical Emotion ... Applied psychology Approaches Behavioral Biological Cognitive Evolutionary ... Psychodynamic Transpersonal Transpersonal psychology is a school of psychology that studies transcendent or spiritual dimensions of humanity. Transpersonal psychology considers such issues as self-development, peak experiences, mystical experiences and the possibility of development beyond traditional ego-boundaries. A short definition from the Journal of Transpersonal Psychology suggests that transpersonal psychology is concerned with the study of humanity’s highest potential, and with the recognition, understanding, and realization of unitive, spiritual, and transcendent states of consciousness (Lajoie and Shapiro, 1992:91). The field is considered by proponents to be the "fourth force"' in the field of psychology, the three other fields being psychoanalysis behaviorism , and Humanistic psychology . According to transpersonal theory these other schools of psychology have failed to give weight to transpersonal or "transegoic" elements of human existence, such as religious conversion altered states of consciousness and spirituality , in their academic reflection. Thus, transpersonal psychology strives to combine insights from modern psychology with insights from the world's contemplative traditions, both East and West. The transpersonal and spiritual dimensions of the psyche has traditionally not been a focus of interest for Western psychology, which has mainly focused on the prepersonal and personal aspects of the human psyche (Miller, 1998).

The study of paranormal activities and phenomena has been riddled with controversy since its conception. It is claimed that some people, utilizing senses beyond the ordinary, exhibit powers that cannot be explained by traditional science. Skeptics of the paranormal point to the fact that in over a century since the first serious studies of the paranormal began, usually dated to the opening of the Society for Psychical Research in London in 1882, no replicable demonstration of any such powers has ever been conducted. Yet many people continue to believe in the existence of the paranormal. The most studied and debated paranormal phenomena are ESP and psychokinesis. ESP is an acronym for extra-sensory perception and encompasses clairvoyance, the ability to perceive something without the use of the senses, and telepathy, the ability to communicate with another person without the use of the senses. (Parapsychologists currently refer to telepathy as "anomalous processes of information or energy transfer.")

ABSTRACT Content analysis of 3 samples of introductory psychology textbooks published in the 1980s (N= 64), in the 1990s (N= 32), and for fall 2002 (N= 57) revealed changes in coverage of ESP and parapsychology Sixty-three percent of the 1980s sample, 54% of the 1990s sample, and 58% of the 2002 sample discussed ESP or parapsychology as a specific topic. The nature of this coverage varied over time. Authors during the 1980s focused on Rhine's Zener card research. During the 1990s, there was increased emphasis on ganzfeld research and Honorton's claim to have developed a replicable experiment. Textbooks in 2002 focused on skeptical themes, noting failures to replicate ganzfeld studies and criticizing parapsychological research. In general, the 2002 coverage of parapsychology was inadequate because there was no discussion of nonganzfeld experiments except when referring to fraud and methodological inadequacy.
