Extra-sensory perception (ESP) experiences can be varied and may include experiences suggestive of telepathy, clairvoyance or precognition. Telepathic experiences suggest an ability for individuals to communicate with each other when other means of communication are ruled out. Clairvoyance experiences suggest an ability to acquire information directly from hidden sources. Precognitive experiences suggest an ability to acquire information from sources that are in the future. Experiences suggestive of psychokinesis (PK) appear to reflect the direct interaction between mental intentions and the physical environment. Due to the difficulties associated with distinguishing ostensible ESP and PK effects, parapsychologists typically use the less value-laden term psi (the Greek letter
Other experiences studied by the group include experiences that suggest that human personality or consciousness may exist outside of a physical body. For example, members of the group study out-of-body experiences, mediumship phenomena, and haunting phenomena.

Can claims of ESP, or extrasensory perception, be studied as a science? Can claims of strange, psychic phenomena be subject to the scientific method? Parapsychology is the scientific study of Paranormal or Psi Phenomena. It is the careful investigation of events like mental telepathy, knowing the future or bizarre manifestations that seemingly cannot be accounted for by natural law or knowledge. The claim that parapsychology is a science excites some, and annoys others. So, is parapsychology a new science or an old fraud? Participants: Beyerstein, Radin, Schlitz, Tart, Trefil Barry Beyerstein is professor of neuropsychology at Simon Fraser University in Canada. He is a leading skeptic, on the Executive Council of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP), and a frequent contributor to The Skeptical Inquirer. Dean Radin Marilyn Schlitz is Director of Research at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, a leading research and membership organization devoted to interdisciplinary and diverse studies of the mind. Trained as an anthropologist, she has conducted some of the most important research in parapsychology.

23. CHANNELING AND THE PRESENCE PHENOMENON. Psychology Or Parapsychology?
When people meet in harmony their minds seem to melt together causing the feelingof a presence. This may take a tangible form voices and materializations

CHANNELING
and the
PRESENCE PHENOMENON
Throughout the ages man have been impressed by intimations of presences manifesting themselves through chosen channels: shamans, mediums, clairvoyants. The earliest descriptions are found in Chinese literature dating back four thousand years. Mediums were called wu at the time and were often consulted, even by emperors. These mediums claimed to transmit advice given by spirits of the deceased. The phenomenon may also present itself when people come together with a common objective. It seems that their minds fuse, creating a common field. In it a presence may manifest itself in such a strong manner that it is not recognised anymore as being part of the participants. The ability of the subconsciousness to dramatize is another aspect that is to be taken into account when this phenomenon is explored. The most common instance being dreams composed of various elements: reminiscenses, sensory stimuli, etc. However absurd the dramatization, the dreamer has no doubts about its authenticity. The same is true for a hypnotized person. He may respond to the most unbelievable suggestions. He may be told in trance that he originates from Mars and will whistle the top ten most popular hit tunes on that planet for that week, when asked to do so. He will unfold an umbrella in a living-room when someone sneezes upon a unconscious suggestion. When taken to account for it he will invent all sorts of explanation to rationalize his strange behaviour.

PARAPSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH When the Society for Psychical Research (S.P.R.) was founded in 1882 research into phenomena and experiences suggesting personal survival of man after death took a high priority. Its findings were constantly under fire from the scientific establishment, which frowned even upon the notion psychical research being considered a science - after all paranormal phenomena did not exist at all! A belief still cherished. Investigators of the S.P.R. became so influenced by these attacks and were so eager to find favour in the eyes of their antagonists that they began to take over their condemning attitude. A common psychological trait - the oppressed identifying themselves with the worst characteristics of their tormentors. Supernatural phenomena are still being dismissed by the academic community. Influenced by recent breaktroughs leading to an explanation of some mysteries, they have come to the conclusion that science will explain all eventually. Scientists, who would not dare to trespass in fields outside their speciality for fear of being torn apart by fellow academics, feel free to make all sorts of pronouncements in the media on subjects in the domain of parapsychological research, of which they have no knowledge whatsoever.

I was born in a farm house to kerosene light near Aurora Iowa ; however, I grew up in Oelwein Iowa , where I graduated from high school in 1955 ( my memory of “Rock Around the Clock” I worked as a receptionist-bookkeeper at Radio Station KOEL, an inspector at Donaldson’s Mfg. Oelwein plant (air cleaners and mufflers), a hobber (machining gears) at John Deere Tractor Factory in Waterloo, Iowa, and finally as a postal worker at the Oelwein Post Office. I quit the Post Office in 1957 and enrolled at Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, majoring in physics as a freshman, pre-med as a sophomore, general science and education as a junior, and psychology as a senior (B.S. degree). During vacations I enjoyed hitchhiking around the U.S. and in Mexico (over 20,000 miles border-to-border and coast-to-coast). In 1959, while hitching through Georgia , I was picked up by rock and roll legend Little Richard the originator, the emancipator, the architect of rock and roll

Related Category: Psychology And Psychiatry parapsychology, study of mental phenomena not explainable by accepted principles of science. The organized, scientific investigation of paranormal phenomena began with the foundation (1882) of the Society for Psychical Research in London. Such early efforts attempted to dissociate psychical phenomena from spiritualism and superstition, and particularly to investigate mediums and their claims of evoking spirits or apparitions. The society also studied automatic writing, levitation, and ectoplasmic and poltergeist activities. One of its principal founders, Frederic William Henry Myers, summed up the society's early efforts in Human Personality and Its Survival of Bodily Death (1903). An American Society for Psychical Research was also founded, with James Hervey Hyslop as its leading spokesman. Considerable experimentation has been conducted, perhaps the best-known being that of Joseph Banks Rhine at Duke Univ. The Foundation for Research on the Nature of Man, created in the early 1960s, has since replaced the Duke program. In Great Britain the work of Whately Carington and Samuel George Soal paralleled that of Rhine. The great majority of parapsychological studies have focused on the area called extrasensory perception (ESP), which includes telepathy, clairvoyance, and precognition. The popular press often reports stories that are parapsychological in nature. Many scientists criticize the claims made by parapsychologists, arguing in particular that there can be no proof of such phenomena.

parapsychology "...parapsychology is the only realm of objective inquiry in which the phenomena are all negatively defined, defined in terms of ruling out normal explanations." James Alcock (2003) Parapsychology is the search for paranormal phenomena, such as ESP and psychokinesis . Most scientists try to explain observable phenomena. Parapsychologists try to observe unexplainable phenomena. All the other sciences have led us away from superstition and magical thinking , while parapsychology has tried to find a scientific basis for divination , magical powers, and spirits Much parapsychology today attempts to find statistical oddities that can't be explained either by the laws of chance or by any other known natural causes. Parapsychologists assume in such cases that they have found evidence for psi Scientific methodology in this field dates from at least 1882 at the founding of the Society for Psychical Research in London, which continues to flourish. Its initial members sought to distinguish psychic phenomena from

Careers in Consciousness Research, Parapsychology and/or Transpersonal Psychology Charles T. Tart October 21, 1997 (Updated January 12, 2000) I get many letters from prospective graduate students who want to study human consciousness, parapsychology, transpersonal psychology, or some combination of these fields, either with me or somewhere: thus this form letter, trying to condense decades of experience into a few pages. [Update note: Generally there is no way to major in consciousness studies, transpersonal psychology, or parapsychology at the undergraduate level, but I recently learned (Jan 16, 2000) that one undergraduate psychology program at Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, New Hampshire, offers a minor in parapsychology, taught through the psychology department and by Prof Bill Jack. Most PA-related websites have links to Franklin Pierce. The SSE (Society for Scientific Exploration) website has a "Young Investigators" section with suggestions and links that might be useful. Academics Academics Home Academic Departments Parapsychology Program Students wishing to to study parapsychology within the psychology major should carefully read the following information: Note that the printed College Catalogue also contains much of this information and is the "official" document to which you should refer. The information provided here is NOT "official."
The parapsychology courses are offered on an alternate year cycle. You should register for the parapsychology courses as soon as possible since they are in "high demand" and not everyone who wishes to take them will be accommodated. Anyone taking the Introduction to Parapsychology course (PS 250) must complete Introduction to Psychology (PS101) or its equivalent such as the high school AP Introduction to Psychology, or, Introduction to psychology at another college. You cannot take PS301 Experimental Parapsychology unless you have completed Behavioral Statistics (PS260) and Research Methods in Psychology (PS261).
You need to take the statistics course in the fall and Research Methods in the spring of the year prior to your taking the parapsychology sequence. On occasion, a section of Research Methods may be offered in the fall semester but you should plan on taking Statistics in the fall and Research Methods in the spring.
