disqualifying the paralympics 2000
by Russ Kick (russ@mindpollen.com) - December 28, 2000
The world's second-largest amateur sporting event just ended. Elite athletes from around the globe competed against each other in dozens of events, shattering records and bringing home medals for 68 countries. But I missed this 12-day event, and chances are you did, too. You see, the United States doesn’t carry broadcasts of the Paralympics. Neither does Australia, which is strange considering it's the country hosting this event. The media in many countries faithfully ignore it, and sponsors stay away in droves. In 1960 the Paralympics first brought together the world's greatest disabled athletes to compete in Olympic-style events. Since the 1970 Games, all forms of disability have been incorporated, so that athletes compete in one of six categories: amputee, wheelchair, cerebral palsy, sight impairment, intellectual disability, and "les autres" (French for "the others," a catch-all category for people with other forms of disability). Within each category, athletes compete against others of similar functionality. For example, blindness is divided into three levels, and cerebral palsy is comprised of eight levels.

Deseret News staff writer It was a climbing accident at the age of 16 that landed Philip Craven atop the organizational chart of the International Paralympic Committee.
Philip Craven
Well, perhaps Craven's ascent to the top of the group that oversees world-class sporting contests for "differently abled" athletes didn't happen in his formative years.
But his accident as a teen was a turning point for Craven. It allowed him to fine-tune his athletic skills, spread his leadership wings and raise his voice in support of the Paralympic Games.
During his time in the IPC's top post, Craven, who was elected in December, intends to "make certain that athletes with less movement will have just as great a chance to compete in Paralympic sport."

the paralympic games
The Paralympic Games: The Second Largest Sporting Event in the World and a Growing Force in the Olympic Movement Started in 1960, the Paralympics Games have become a vital part of the Olympic movement. Meaning "Parallel Olympics", the Paralympics are recognized by the International Olympic Committee and are Olympic equivalent competitions for individuals with disabilities. The Paralympic Games offer a multi-sport, multi-disability competition for elite, world-class wheelchair, amputee, cerebral palsy and blind/visually-impaired athletes. The Olympic host country holds the Paralympic Games two weeks following the Olympics, utilizing the same city venue. Only the highest achieving athletes in each sport can qualify for the Paralympics. The 2000 Sydney Paralympics hosted 3,912 athletes, 250 from the U.S., who won 109 medals. The U.S. took third place in the medal count behind Australia (149) and Great Britain (131). www.paralympic.org

The Paralympics
An English neurologist, 130 countries, a gathering of disabled athletes and four very special sports: All of these elements make up the Paralympics. BACK COMMENTS He was English with a German background, a neurosurgeon and a sir. And he made a name for himself as the founding father of the Paralympic Games. In 1948 Ludwig Guttman initiated the first sporting competitions for wheelchair athletes in England. Twelve years later, in 1960, the first “Disabled Olympics” were held in Rome, shortly after the Summer Olympics. This system proved opportune, and today the 12th Paralympics will also take place a few weeks after the Olympics - from 17 to 28 September 2004. Both 2004 games will be held in Athens, and the host city is introducing a new concept this year: both Olympic and Paralympic Games will be held under one roof. This facilitates planning of many aspects – for example, transporting participants, housing athletes and re-equipping the sports venues. Another new development: athletes with a disability now take part for free, just like their Olympic colleagues. Previously, disabled players had to pay to compete in the Games. This unequal treatment is now a thing of the past.

"Paralympics not in the Shadow, but in the Light of the Olympic Games"
"In the same way as sport in general can not live of and benefit from the Olympic Games only, the chances for sport for athletes with a disability lie not only in the realization and the success of the Paralympic Games. But nevertheless are the Paralympic Games and the cooperation with the International Olympic Committee, which is an essential factor for the organization of the Games, the basis for everything else. The Public Relations department of the IOC is at the IPC's disposal for the presentation of their concerns and needs. Another equalization with the national Olympic Committees is to be seen in the future support of the national committees of the IPC for the participation at Paralympic Games given by the IOC.

The various international sports federations choose the disciplines, events, and sports for each of the Olympic Games. To qualify as an Olympic sport, that sport must be widely practiced by men in at least 75 countries and on four continents, and by women in at least 40 countries and on three continents. Sports widely practiced in at least 25 countries and on three continents may be included in the Winter Games. In the past, the host country occasionally has been allowed to include one or two demonstration sports. If there is enough interest, they may be selected as medal sports in future Games. For example, tennis and baseball were demonstration sports before becoming medal sports in the 1988 and 1992 Games, respectively. Check out More Sports for all the action!
