But Canadian Paralympic shot putter Ljiljana Ljubisic thinks integrating certain high-profile wheelchair sports and not other disabled sports would lead to a two-tiered system. She feels the Paralympics would suffer. In this thoughtful debate from CBC Radio's The Inside Track , the athletes argue their sides on this contentious issue.

The Paralympics, which kick off Thursday night at an opening ceremony at Rice-Eccles Paralympic Stadium, feature the world's premier athletes with disabilities competing in alpine skiing, ice sled hockey and nordic events. This community looks forward to another opportunity to witness inspiring performances in world-class competition.
As with the recently concluded 2002 Winter Games, this page predicts that Utahns will extend a warm welcome to international athletes, officials and spectators who will take part in the Games. And why not? Utahns always have risen to such occasions. Some 450 athletes representing 36 nations will take part in the Paralympics, which will be staffed, in part, by some 4,200 volunteers.
Although the competition promises to be intense, the Paralympics are a kinder, gentler spectator alternative to the Olympics, which had pricey tickets, long waits in security lines and huge crowds. Tickets sales to Paralympic events have been brisk, which can be attributed to their affordability and the interest in winter sports stirred by the 2002 Games.
Another bonus is that security will not be as great because the Paralympics is not deemed to have a high level of threat, officials have said. That should make for more efficient seating and movement within the venues.

Preparations for 2004 Paralympics Off to a Good Start
The preparations for the Paralympic Games 2004 in Athens are well underway. This is the result of the first visit of the Liaison Committee of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to the Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games Athens 2004 (ATHOC), which was concluded today.
The Paralympic Games, which are the equivalent to the Olympic Games for athletes with a disability, will take place shortly after the Olympic Games, using the same sporting facilities. Around 8,000 participants (including athletes and officials) from more than 120 countries will be involved in 18 sports, 14 of which are Olympic sports. Despite the fact that the host city contract between the IPC and ATHOC was only signed in April 2001, the Liaison Committee was positively surprised by the progress the Organizing Committee has made. The commitment of the entire ATHOC staff led by the President, Mrs. Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, who opened the meeting, impressed the members of the IPC Liaison Committee.

Completing the picture, an Olympic flame arcs from point to point, igniting the determination that creates win ners. "Starfire" is an apt symbol for the 3,500 disabled athletes representing 127 countries. Come Aug. 15, champion swimmers will compete at Georgia Tech's Aquatic Center, while other events will pepper Atlanta, the first U.S. city to host the Paralympic Games. Launched in 1948 at England's Stoke-Mandeville Hospital to coincide with the London-based Olympic Games, the Paralympics got off to a rocky start until 1960 in Rome, when it became an official quadrennial event. Since then, it's grown from 23 countries t o 127 and from limited wheelchair sports to 17. They include track and field, basketball, cycling, swimming, weightlifting, tennis, fencing, rowing and judo. These athletes perform a balancing act, trying to keep their lives in sync. Despite daily workouts and training practice that eat up large chunks of each day with virtually no leisure time they still find time to work. That means extremely long days. Unf ortunately, family life suffers when you commit yourself to becoming a world-class athlete. Among the Paralympics champions who will compete in Atlanta's 1996 Games are Trischa Zorn, elementary school teacher and swimmer with 10 Barcelona gold medals; Scot Hollonbeck, Coca-Cola Olympic sports marketing coordinator and gold-medal wheelchair racer in the 4 x 400-meter and 800-meter events; and Linda Mastandrea, attorney/advocate for the disabled and national track-and-field champion, voted U.S. Cerebral Palsy Athletic Association "Athlete of the Year" in '93 and '95.

Superpowers struggle to perform at Paralympics

KERRY O'BRIEN: Australia's Paralympic athletes are basking in the glory of their gold medal haul, dominating the medal tally with 63 gold.
Great Britain and Spain have come in second and third - a dramatically different performance pattern to the Olympics themselves, which were dominated by superpowers - the US, Russia and China, with Australia fourth.
How does a country as small as Spain, with a limited economy, do so well compared to its Olympic performance and the US have to eat such humble pie?
    Genevieve Hussey reports.
GENEVIEVE HUSSEY: Australia's Paralympians are on top of the world after their most successful Games ever.
PAUL BIRD, AUSTRALIAN CHEF DE MISSION: We're ecstatic with the result.
To be number one, obviously, was always a goal and we've achieved that exceptionally well.
GENEVIEVE HUSSEY: Australia dominated the medal tally with 149 medals - 63 gold, 39 silver and 47 bronze. PAUL DA PACE, US CHEF DE MISSION: I think that the Australian team has used home court advantage to its greatest extent. I'm really impressed.

It will also host the Paralympic Village, an integrated 318-room hotel complex, the impressively engineered Olympic Park Station and the Millennium Parklands. In the Millennium Parklands, the New South Wales Government has set itself the goal of creating what it calls "one of the world's great urban parks". Certainly, the scale of the project is impressive. Bigger than New York's Central Park, the parklands, scheduled for completion in 2010, will cover 450 hectares.

Sport offers people with disabilities the ideal opportunity to develop their personal talents and to gain an awareness of their own skills.
It is often an excellent way of promoting a better participation of disabled people in mainstream society and creating an awareness of the need to focus on the abilities of individuals. Disabled people have been participating in sports for many years. It was at the beginning of the 19th century that members of the medical profession discovered the important contribution that sporting activities could make to promoting the integration of disabled people within society and within the scope of rehabilitation.
After the Second World War, when the number of military and civil casualties was extremely high, sport for those with physical disabilities came to play an increasingly important role. The Stoke Mandeville Games, the first competition for wheelchair athletes, was founded on the first day of the Olympic Games in London on 28 July 1948.
There are now two major world sporting events for disabled athletes. The first is the Paralympics, which are always held after the Olympic Games and are open to anyone with a physical disability. The second major international competition for disabled athletes is the Special Olympics World Games.
