UPDATE: Paralympic athletes sue U.S. Olympic Committee for disability discrimination . July 28, 2003 Paralympians Scot Hollonbeck, of Atlanta, Georgia, Tony Iniguez, of Aurora, Illinois, and Jacob Heilveil of Bothell, Washington, said in the lawsuit that the USOC violates federal law by providing benefits - such as elite training, coaching, performance incentives and health insurance - to Olympic athletes but denies those benefits to Paralympic athletes. Bad Sports:
U.S. Olympic Committee thumbs nose at Paralympics By Josie Byzek. Sidebar: Vertical Integration Josie Byzek writes frequently about disability rights. Not a single Olympic dollar will go to Paralympic athletes for the upcoming games in 2000. That was the word from U.S. Olympic Committee Executive Director Dick Schultz at a mid-April Colorado Springs meeting of the organization's Committee on Sports for the Disabled. No sponsorships would be pursued by the USOC for the Paralympics either, said Schultz. This will leave Paralympians effectively without funding for their events. For amateur sports in America, all roads lead to the U. S. Olympic Committee. The 1978 Amateur Sports Act required the USOC to involve disabled athletes, but "it was so gray the Committee could always wiggle out of having to do anything," says five-time Paralympic medalist Scot Hollonbeck. A 1998 amendment now makes the requirement clear. Yet USOC support is "just not there for Paralympians," says the U.S. Disabled Athletes' Fund's Andy Fleming.

Craven hails landmark Paralympics
Ticket sales topped 850,000, were budgeted for 400,000
ATHENS, Greece - Phil Craven, president of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), gave a resounding thumbs-up to the spirit and organisation of the Athens Games on Wednesday. "The Games were a roaring success," he told Athens International Radio. "You can see that from the ticket sales. If you budget for 400,000 and end up with 850,000 then you have got to have most things right." Around 4,000 competitors from 140 nations took part in the 12-day Games which closed on Tuesday. Craven said: "We don't have an official measuring policy as to how good a Games is but, as the president, the first people I speak to are the athletes and the team officials and right from the start they were very happy to be in the village. "They were being well fed and were training well. I heard this from several chefs de mission. We had good venues and we overcame potential transport problems. So from the athletes' side, it was a great success as well." Craven added: "My outstanding memory of Athens 2004 is to see full or mainly full stadiums with...thousands of Greek fans cheering on their own competitors very wildly and enthusiastically but also cheering on the opposition."

Australian Federal Parliament I rise tonight to talk about the wonderful and inspiring events of the past few weeks - and the equally inspiring events we will see when the Paralympics begin on September 18. The Olympic Games are more than just a sporting event. It is not about medal tallies, although that is a measure of the success of our elite sporting programs. The Olympics represent an opportunity for nations to showcase their cultural, political, economic, social and sporting achievements - and in almost every respect Australia showed world-class performances in these areas. There are particular features of the Olympics that stand out for special mention. Second, the New South Wales Government and SOCOG, who despite some pre-Games problems, delivered a near perfect Games. As with many other interstate spectators, I was very impressed with the transport system and slickness of operations which, given the problems of Atlanta, is testament to an epic planning and operational plan. Third, the officials and administrators who created a seamless environment in which world class athletic competition thrived.
