History of the Olympics
The Olympic Games were the brainchild of Lycourgos King of Sparta . In 776 BC he was drawn into a treaty with Ifitos and Cleisthenes the King of Pissa . The treaty was reaffirmed every four years at a meeting which featured a race between the three Greek provinces. The four year period was an Olympiad.
The games endured for twelve continuous centuries. The races and sports were held at Olympia and gradually became very ceremonial, attracting huge crowds from all over Greece. When the games were abolished in 393 A.D.

Paralympics open in a blaze of light
Associated Press
SYDNEY, Australia Rain that threatened to spoil the celebration held off Wednesday for the 11th Paralympics to open with a big party. Huge fish float above the crowd during the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games in Sydney Wednesday. The biggest Paralympics picked up where the Sydney Games, the biggest of the modern Olympic era, ended 17 days earlier in a vibrant spectacle of dance, music and Aussie icons. Thousands of glowing flashlights inside the stadium compensated for the starry cosmos that usually backlights the Southern Cross constellation that was hidden behind overcast skies. Gray clouds hung menacingly over the city all day and weather forecasters had predicted heavy rain and strong winds during the evening, but it never rained. Another full-scale party was already in full swing by the time governor general Sir William Deane declared the games open and swimmer Tracey Cross read the oath. In his opening address, International Paralympic Committee president Robert Steadward paid tribute to the unparalleled success of the Olympic Games, then promised more of the same.

The Paralympics have grown into a huge event
The Paralympics have come a long way from its humble beginnings as a rehabilitation programme for British war veterans with spinal injuries as BBC Sport Online discovers. Back in 1948, Sir Ludwig Guttman, a neurologist who was working with World War II veterans with spinal injuries at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, began using sport as part of the rehabilitation programmes of his patients. He set up a competition with other hospitals to coincide with the London Olympics in that year. Over the next decade Guttman's care plan was adopted by other spinal injury units in Britain and competition grew. In 1960, the Olympics were held in Rome, and Guttmann brought 400 wheelchair athletes to the Olympic city to compete. The modern Parallel Olympics (or "Paralympics") were born First gold Britain's first ever gold medal was won by Margaret Maughan that year in archery - the first sport to be included in Guttman's treatment plans.

Election 2004 SPECIAL STORIES September 15, 2004 Benoit to carry flag at Paralympics ATHENS (CP) - Chantal Benoit will kick off her sixth Paralympic Games by leading the Canadian team into Athens Olympic Stadium during Friday's opening ceremony. Benoit, a veteran wheelchair basketball player who lives in Orleans, Ont., was named Canada's flag-bearer on Wednesday. "This is a delegation of 144 athletes it's just unfortunate that flag is not big enough to have the hands of those 144 persons," said Benoit. "I take it as a huge privilege to be part of a country like Canada." Benoit is among several experienced athletes on the 144-member Canadian team. More than two-thirds of the athletes competed in Sydney four years ago.
