Four years later, competitors from Holland joined the Games, and the international movement, now known as the Paralympics, was born. Olympic-style games for athletes with a disability were organised for the first time in Rome in 1960. In Toronto in 1976, other disability groups were added and the idea of merging together different disability groups for international sports competitions was born. In the same year, the first Paralympic Winter Games took place in Sweden. PARALYMPIC GAMES Credit: Matt Turner/Allsport The Paralympic Games have always been held in the same year as the Olympic Games. Since the 1988 Seoul Summer Games and the 1992 Albertville Winter Games, they have also taken place at the same venues as the Olympic Games. On 19 June 2001, an agreement was signed between the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee aiming to secure the organisation of the Paralympic Games. The agreement reaffirmed that the Paralympic Games, from 2008 on, will always take place shortly after the Olympic Games, using the same sporting venues and facilities. Since the Salt Lake 2002 Games, one organising committee is responsible for hosting both the Olympic and the Paralympic Games. Athletes from both Games live in the same Village and enjoy the same catering services, medical care and facilities. Ticketing, technology and transport systems for the Olympic Games are seamlessly extended to the Paralympics.

Paralympic Games
In 1948, Sir Ludwig Guttmann organized a sports competition involving World War II veterans with a spinal cord injury in Stoke Mandeville, England. Four years later, competitors from the Netherlands joined the games and an international movement was born. Olympic style games for athletes with a disability were organized for the first time in Rome in 1960, now called Paralympics. In Toronto in 1976, other disability groups were added and the idea of merging together different disability groups for international sport competitions was born. In the same year, the first Paralympic Winter Games took place in Sweden.
Today, the Paralympics are elite sport events for athletes from six different disability groups. They emphasize, however, the participants' athletic achievements rather than their disability. The movement has grown dramatically since its first days. The number of athletes participating in Summer Paralympic Games has increased from 400 athletes in Rome in 1960 to 3843 in Sydney in 2000. In Athens 2004, a record number of 136 countries participated at the Paralympics, making this the largest Games in Paralympic history.
The Paralympic Games have always been held in the same year as the Olympic Games. Since the Seoul 1988 Paralympic Games and the Albertville 1992 Winter Paralympic Games they have also taken place at the same venues as the Olympics. On 19 June 2001, an agreement was signed between IOC and IPC securing this practice for the future. From the 2012 bid process onwards, the host city chosen to host the Olympic Games will be obliged to also host the Paralympics.

quest to host the Olympic Winter Games spanned three decades. During that time the city grew in size and in experience to host international competitions. The following is a summary of Salt Lake City's involvement in the Olympic movement. January 1966
Salt Lake City is chosen as the USA candidate city to host the 1972 Olympic Winter Games, but in April the IOC chooses Sapporo, Japan as host for the 1972 Olympic Winter Games. December 1967
Salt Lake City again seeks to be the USA candidate city for the 1976 Olympic Winter Games. Salt Lake City competes against Denver, Colorado; Seattle, Washington; and Lake Placid, New York. Denver is chosen. January 1973
Denver withdraws and the United States Olympic Committee unanimously names Salt Lake City as the replacement candidate for the 1976 Olympic Winter Games. In February 1973, the IOC chooses Innsbruck, Austria to host the 1976 Olympic Winter Games. June 1985
Salt Lake City competes against Anchorage, Alaska; Reno, Nevada; and Lake Placid, New York, to become the USOC's candidate city for the 1992 and 1994 Olympic Winter Games. Anchorage is chosen the USA candidate but loses to Albertville, France for the 1992 Games and to Lillehammer, Norway for the 1994 Games.

The Summer Paralympic Games are the ultimate competition for world class elite athletes with a disability and as such are linked to the Olympic Celebration each quadrennium. The Paralympic Games, in terms of complexity, duration and the number of competitors, are second only to the Olympic Games.
The fundamental philosophy guiding the Paralympic movement is that athletes with disabilities should have opportunities to pursue their goals in sport equivalent to those of non-disabled athletes. Athletes who compete in the Paralympics set their sights on the dream of winning a gold medal, are committed to strenuous training regimes and meet strict qualifying standards to be selected to their national team. The Paralympic Games represent a commitment to excellence that allows elite athletes to achieve their personal best. The Paralympic Games exemplify the Olympic ideal of participation and sportsmanship.

He received the Olympic Book of the Year Award in 1989 for The Olympic Myth of Greek Amateur Athletics Professor Young has had a lifelong interest in sports and is a specialist on the ancient Greek poet Pindar, who often included athletes among his topics. Young is one of a small group of Olympic historians whose work has changed our understanding of the history of the modern Olympic movement. Before the work of Professor Young, most historians gave credit for the idea to revive the modern Olympic movement to French nobleman Baron Pierre de Coubertin in the 1890s. But Young serendipitously discovered volumes of documents in Much Wenlock, England, that changed the history of the modern Olympic movement.

Ancient Olympics
The first record of the Olympic Games dates from 776BC, but they were probably established hundreds of years before that. The Games began as a small event but gradually gained popularity to become the premier festival in Greece. For at least 1,000 years, they were held every four years, and survived in spite of numerous wars and the Roman invasion of Greece in about AD150.

  • The Ancient Games were held in honour of which God? What were some of the events held at the Ancient Games? Who could take part in the Ancient Games? Why were the Ancient Games stopped?

Special Olympics and Paralympics are two separate organizations recognized by the International Olympic Committee. The principal differences between the two lie in the disability of participating athletes and levels of sports ability. In addition, Special Olympics is the only organization that the International Olympic Committee [see Partnerships ] has given permission to use the word "Olympics."

Finance Minister Giorgos Alogoskoufis indicated the soaring cost for the Athens Games could climb even higher. "The cost of the Olympics Games for the state and Athens 2004 approaches euro 9 billion (11.6 billion dollars). This is the immediate cost for the state and does not include expenditures for infrastructure," Alogoskoufis said after a Cabinet meeting. He did not give a figure for the infrastructure costs. Those costs include expensive transport projects such as a new tram line, suburban rail network and the extension of the Athens metro system to the airport. Built in 2004, the tram alone cost at least euro 267 million (344 million dollars). "There is a huge overrun in relation to original estimates," Alogoskoufis said.
