F or those who track how each Olympic host city handles the world's biggest sports medicine event, the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City offers some ambitious new developments. For the first time in Olympic history, an organizing committee has contracted with a large healthcare network to provide medical care. Another first is a computerized infectious disease surveillance system that will use real-time data to quickly identify illness outbreaks.
A New Provider Model
The decision by the Salt Lake City Organizing Committee (SLOC) upon winning its bid to award Intermountain Health Care (IHC) a contract to provide medical care at the Olympics and the Paralympics (held at the same sites in March) offers several important benefits, says Ginny Borncamp, an executive with IHC who is director of medical services for the SLOC. "We're already well acquainted with suppliers, primary care, and sports medicine, and there's a huge benefit for volunteer recruitment, screening, and selection," she says. The response to medical volunteer recruiting efforts was vigorous, attracting 13,000 applicants for 1,500 positions at the Olympics and 300 at the Paralympics. The response allowed screeners to be selective in the skill sets of the physicians, nurses, and emergency medical technicians, which is appropriate for the primary care needs of the event as a whole. "In addition to sports medicine injuries, we'll be seeing a lot of upper respiratory infections, GI complaints, and minor injuries," she says.

Check out Sports Illustrated For Kids' coverage of the Summer Olympics in Athens! Olympic fever has taken over the city of Athens. More than 10,000 athletes are ready to compete in Athens, the capital of Greece and host to the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Tens of thousands of tickets have been sold daily for the past few days. Olympic History
In ancient times, the Games were based on Greek myths. They were celebrated every four years with sports competitions and a religious festival that honored Greek gods. The competitions began with short foot races and grew to include longer-distance running, jumping and discus throwing.
People watch as the Olympic torch passes across new Rio-Antirion bridge, which links the south Peloponnese region to mainland Greece. About 300 athletes from 13 countries participated in this first modern Olympics in Athens. The Games were a huge success and for the next 100 years, the Olympics traveled to countries all over the world, promoting competition, peace and unity.

Athletes with disabilities have been scooping up condoms at a record pace during their games in Sydney JAMES CHRISTIE TORONTO One of the messages of the Paralympic Games in Sydney is the need to get rid of barriers. Athletes with disabilities want to be seen the way Olympians are seen, as sport performers. Medical staff at the athletes' village report that Paralympians and Olympians are even on one score their demand for condoms. Wheelchairs and prostheses don't pose any barrier at all, it seems, as young, athletes driven by hormones have scooped up 50,000 condoms in the first eight days in the village. That equals about seven condoms an athlete or official staying at the Games village.

Polyclinic Successful During Olympics, Prepares for Paralympics
By Sheena McFarland Published: Friday, March 1, 2002 While business at University Hospital suffered during the Games, the Polyclinic kept busy treating athletes in the Olympic Village.
The clinic, set up to serve Olympic athletes, officials, volunteers and staff, cared for nearly 1,800 patients during its 29-day run.
"We were the busiest medical clinic in Salt Lake City," said William Holt, University Hospital Olympic coordinator.
Between the Polyclinic and the U's emergency treatment area downtown, the U took care of nearly 40 percent of the medical cases during the Games, Holt said.
"By far, the most frequent problem or complaint has been musculoskeletal types of injuries—strains, tears," said Rick Fullmer, executive director of University Hospital.
Other than musculoskeletal problems, patients came in for dental work and eye care. According to Fullmer, the clinic issued more than 200 pairs of eyeglasses.

    Flashback to Sydney
The Paralympics have come a long way from its humble beginnings as a rehabilitation programme for British war veterans with spinal injuries.
Back in 1948, Sir Ludwig Guttman, a neurologist who was working with World War II veterans with spinal injuries at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, began using sport as part of the rehabilitation programmes of his patients. He set up a competition with other hospitals to coincide with the London Olympics in that year. Over the next decade Guttman's care plan was adopted by other spinal injury units in Britain and competition grew. In 1960, the Olympics were held in Rome, and Guttmann brought 400 wheelchair athletes to the Olympic city to compete. The modern Parallel Olympics (or "Paralympics") were born.
