Women in the Olympics - a brief history
The 20th May 2000 marks the 100th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games. It also marks the centenary of women’s participation in the modern Olympics. Three events were available for women at the 1900 Olympic Games: golf, tennis and yachting. When the modern Olympic Games began in 1896 women had no part in the competition. In fact, the founder of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin had said on several occasions that the Olympics were no place for women. He felt that rather than seek records for herself, a woman’s greatest achievement was to encourage her sons to excel. Women had to work to gain a presence in the Olympic arena and force open the door to one sport after another. Swimming for women was included in the Games in 1912 and a limited program of track and field was added in 1928. Women’s races longer than 200m were banned until 1960 when the 800m was reintroduced. The women’s marathon was not added until 1984. In 1992 the 10,000m walk was introduced and recently, waterpolo — which had been the domain of men since the Olympics first began — was added to the 2000 Olympic Games program for women. Women have played an enormous role in painting the Olympic picture. Since Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain won gold in singles tennis at the 1900 Paris Olympics, many women have put their stamp on Olympic history.

ON-LINE BUYERS GUIDE by William Bishop Athletes are making history in the world of sports for persons with a disability and Canada is among the top nations involved. In 1973, Eugene Reimer, (a paraplegic wheelchair athlete who won a number of world records) became Sport Canada's Male Athlete of the Year for 1972, an honour no other nation has ever bestowed on a disabled athlete. Three years later, in 1975, the first tri-disability competitions were held in Edmonton, Alberta. They included the annual Wheelchair, Blind and Amputee Games. In 1983, athlete Rick Hansen was honoured with the first Lou Marsh Special Award of Merit, (given to Canada's most outstanding athlete) for winning nine gold medals at the Pan American Wheelchair Games in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation established the Dr. Robert Jackson Award for Ontario's Disabled Athlete of the Year in 1986. St. Catharines's Joanne Bouw, a cerebral palsy athlete was the first recipient, recognized for her accomplishments as a field event World Champion. Sports for disabled athletes did not always have a high profile. Over the years they have gone through many changes, survived many obstacles. The earliest record of Sport for the Physically Disabled dates back to World War I when it was initiated as a form of treatment, especially among the blind and amputees servicemen. But the interest and enthusiasm among the disabled was not long lasting. Prior to 1940, medicine was able to do little for disabled persons, especially those who suffered spinal injuries. The majority of the spinal injured died a short time after their accidents from ensuing complications and sometimes from the loss of the will to live.

Olympic Games, Spirit and Modern History
" The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."
Olympic Creed
The Olympic Movement
The first recorded Ancient Games was held in 776 B.C. in ancient Europe, but evidence suggests that Games were being held long before that. Originally, competition consisted of a single foot race over a distance of 200 meters, but within a short time, the event grew to include five sports or a pentathlon. The "Olympiad" became an important event and was held every four years. During Olympic years, warring city-states were encouraged to lay down their weapons and to compete in peace on the playing field instead of on the battlefield. The Olympic Games were canceled in 394 A.D. for religious reasons. Greece, as part of the Roman Empire, had become Christian and the games were considered Pagan. Centuries later, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator and historian, recommended that the Olympic Games be restored. Coubertin believed in the spirit of Olympism; a set of values that enhance the physical, intellectual and spiritual growth of participants through sport, art and music, while promoting friendship and understanding throughout the world. Due to his work, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was established and Athens, Greece had the honor of being the first city to host the modern Games in the year l896. June 23, l896 was designated as "Olympic Day" throughout the world.

Search Across All Frontiers – the 12th Paralympics in Athens The 12th Summer Paralympics in Athens have finished. From 17 – 28 September 2004, 3969 athletes from around 130 countries with physical or mental disabilities competed in 19 sporting disciplines for a total of 525 medals. And they were very successful – the competitors amassed 304 world records and 448 Paralympic records, while a global audience became involved on an unprecedented scale. The German team put on a brilliant performance as well – the 213 Paralympic athletes from Germany won precious metal 78 times (of which 19 were gold metals, 28 silver and 31 bronze), which secured them eighth place out of 73 nations. But despite all the victories, the Paralympics does not just focus on the athletes' personal success, it also demonstrates that sporting motivation and fair play across all frontiers encourages people and brings them together. The 12th Paralympics in Athens was also an impressive testimonial not only to the fact that competitive sport for handicapped people has progressed considerably, but to the development of the entire associated area as well – including publicity, work at association level, and promotion of sport by governments and other institutions. Even before the start of the first competition, the Paralympics in Athens claimed its first superlative – they were the biggest games ever held. The athletes, of whom there were around 4000, were accompanied by 2000 support personnel and 15000 voluntary helpers in the 20 competition venues. 3000 media representatives provided 24-hour coverage of the Paralympics. 850.000 tickets for the games were sold.

The Second Coubertin
The idea of athletes on wheelchairs was unfathomable until British doctor Ludwig Guttman encouraged his disabled patients to take part in sporting activities. BACK WWW paralympics.de Wheelchair users who take part in competitive sports? This was implausible 50 years ago. The British doctor Ludwig Guttman did not just want to keep his patients alive – the medical technology at that time did not permit him to do much more – but he also wanted to help them to lead as normal a life as possible. His therapy consisted of enhancing their lives by helping them enjoy participation in sporting activities.
The Second World War left its mark on the soldiers for their whole lives. The lucky ones who returned at all had witnessed horrific scenes. They had to cope with the inextinguishable memory of the hell of war. A lot of them also returned crippled and maimed. In the light of this suffering, the neurologist Sir Ludwig Guttmann set about improving the treatment of invalids. Sport played an important part in his therapy. Thus the doctor, who originally came from Germany, initiated the first sporting competitions for paralysed patients in his clinic in the English town of Stoke Mandeville at the same time as the Olympic Games in London in 1948.
It began on a small scale
Guttmann believed that physical exercise should on the one hand treat the physical injuries and, on the other hand, also awaken the disabled people’s will to survive. In addition Guttmann wanted to provide them with some hope in life and also to boost their self-esteem. He had the ambitious objective of integrating his patients into society as fully recognised members. It was no easy task, as at that time a negative stigma was still attached to the disabled. The first step is always the most difficult: During the first Stoke-Mandeville games just 16 athletes took part. But the idea fell on fertile ground. In 1952 Dutch war veterans also came and the games gradually became an international sports festival. They now still take place every year.
