> Wild Budgies in Australia
Keeping budgies with other birds There are some attractive bird species you can keep together with budgies without expecting any problems. But of course, they should all have enough room in their aviary. Hiding places are also welcome if you care for a mixed flock of birds. Parrot Species: If you keep your birds in the house, budgies and cockatiels ( Nymphicus hollandicus ) will become close friends (except during the breeding period). In their wild Australian home, these two species share the same habitat. There are other Australian birds who can be kept together with budgies: the grass parrots (neophema). In aviaries, those nice guys will live in harmony with your budgies. But during the breeding period, it is advised to separate the different species! I once saw how aggressive for example turquoise parrots ( Neophema pulchella ) could become while hatching their chicks!

Budgies: A Species Profile By Chiara Petro and KT Lyons Budgerigars ( Melopsittacus undulatus ), or "betcherrygah" as the Aborigines of Australia call them, are small parrots sporting a long tapered tail. Originally from Australia, the wild budgerigar is a green bird, with a yellow face, and black spots on the mask, black wavy bands on the wings, back and head. Once taken out of their native land and bred, color mutations occurred so that now there are many color strains from which to chose. Many people wonder if a parakeet and a budgerigar, also called a budgie, are the same thing. A budgie is always a parakeet but a parakeet isn't always a budgie. To clarify, parakeet means small parrot. There are a number of birds in the psittacine family that have parakeet in their names such as Bourke's parakeets, green cheeked parakeets, orange chinned parakeets, etc. A budgie is a type of parakeet.

The Budgerigar Melopsittacus undulatus , or "Budgie" ), is a small parrot (they are often called parakeets but "parakeet" refers to many small parrots with long flat tails) originating in Australia , where it occurs throughout the drier parts of the continent. It is 18 cm long and 30-40 gram weight, and has a green body, blue tail, and yellow face; the wings have greenish-black flight feathers and black coverts with yellow fringes, this black-and-yellow feathering also on the upper mantle and nape. The legs are pink or grey, with zygodactyl toes. The bill is pinkish-brown with a basal cere bluish in adult males, pinkish-brown in females and immatures. Although in pied, lutinos, albinoes, and other red eye budgies the rules don't stick so well. It is the only species in the genus Melopsittacus It occurs in a variety of open habitats, primarily in scrub, open woodland and grassland. Breeding can be at any time of the year following good rains which promote the growth of the grass and other plant seeds that comprise their diet. The nest is in a hole in a tree; the 4-7 eggs are incubated for 18 days, with the young fledging about 30 days after hatching. Outside of breeding, Budgerigars are highly nomadic, covering extensive areas in small to very large flocks, seeking areas with good food resources. The nomadism also includes an element of

BellaOnline's Birds Editor Budgies (Budgerigar) The Budgerigar, commonly called a budgie is probably the most popular pet bird in the world. They are small, attractive, friendly and can learn to talk. In the United States they are commonly called Parakeets or keets although they are simply one of many different kinds of Parakeets.
If you are lucky enough to find a breeder who handfeeds these birds you will have an absolutely marvelous pet on your hands. They are quite easy to tame even if not handfed with a bit of patience, but a handfed bird is one of a kind. It is not easy to tell the sex of a young Budgie, but breeders who know their birds are often successful in telling them apart. Once the bird is past 6 months or so, it is fairly easy to tell by looking at the cere just above the top of the beak. This area will change colour and the male’s will be a blue or purple colour with the female’s being a brown. Pictured here are 3 budgies. Notice the blue just above the beaks. The blue is the cere and this indicates that all 3 birds are male. Thanks to Louis Garwood for the use of these pictures.

And it's no surprise why. They are smart, affectionate, and beautiful. The Budgie can make a wonderful addition to any home. Budgerigars in the wild are social birds, traveling in a variety of flock sizes. Small flocks can number in the 1920s, while some have noted budgie flocks of over 25,000! Like domestic budgies, their wild counterparts are placid, even tempered, and outgoing. It is rare to see wild budgies quarrelling with each other. These wild budgies are not shy and are often easily approachable. Their natural diet consists of grass seeds, eucalyptus leaves, buds, bark, millet, and a variety of greens.

    Parakeet
Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Parakeet , common name for the smaller members of the parrot family. As the name is based on size rather than on taxonomic relationship, members of about 15 diverse genera are called parakeets. Several are commonly kept as cage birds; the best known of these is the Australian budgerigar, which is the bird usually called parakeet in pet stores. Wild “budgies” are mostly green, but many color varieties have been bred in captivity. Budgerigars kept in captivity often mimic human speech, as do some other members of the parrot family. The largest genus of parakeets in the tropical Americas contains 19 species, known in the cage-bird trade as
