Budgerigars: The Most Popular Pet in America
Childhood Memories of Terrific Pet Potential and Poor Care
by Sally Blanchard us for permission. Reminiscing About Our First Parrots "You're in a jam, Gracie" One time when my grandmother was visiting, Mickey landed on her shoulder as she was going out the front door and said "Shut the door stupid, the bird's out!" . Luckily, he stayed put as she quickly hurried back into the house. Mickey loved to admire himself in our antique wall mirrors so much that my father painted green leaves around the bottom of all of the hanging mirrors. This way the little narcissist couldn't see him self and left the mirrors alone. Dive Bombing Once my father caught him, the woman insisted that the fearsome flyer be placed completely out of sight or her husband would have to take her home immediately. I just couldn't understand and probably still can't why anyone would have such an overwhelmingly phobic reaction to my terrific little guy. This was even before Alfred Hitchcock's

BUDGIES:
Budgerigars ("budgies") are small, colorful birds that are found in large numbers in the desert interiors of Australia. Because free-ranging birds are accustomed to going days without water, it is not appropriate in captivity to use drinking water as a vehicle for administering vitamins or medications. The normal free-ranging budgie is green; other colors have resulted from selective breeding, which has actually produced undesirable characteristics, such as a significant increase in body mass and unusual feathering that interferes with normal body functions. Budgerigars are very easy to breed in captivity. Green birds are the most disease-resistant and probably have the longest life expectancy in captivity. Avoid purchasing a bird mill budgie sold in most chain pet stores. Contact a breeder with references to get a healthy bird.

Budgerigars (commonly referred to as "parakeets" or "budgies") are quiet, intelligent, nondestructive birds that are easy to care for. They are the most popular and numerous companion birds because of their relatively gentle, gregarious and entertaining personalities. They do not tend to bond with an individual person, and frequently interact with all family members. Budgerigars are capable of developing a large vocabulary (perhaps 200-300 words) but some effort must be made to accomplish this, and their voice is not as clear as other pet bird species. Some individuals are also good at whistling. Not talking at all is not unusual.

Budgies
Budgerigars (Budgies) are probably one of the most underestimated pet birds, in terms of their personality and pet potential. Because they are common, inexpensive, and have been around for a long time, people tend to think of a Budgie as boring. Nothing can be further from the truth. Some of the coolest birds I have known have been Budgies. I grew up with a Budgie, who lived to be 13. At the time that was fairly remarkable, but nowadays with improved diet and veterinary care, Budgies commonly live into their teens. They are full of energy, playful and clownish, with a bit of a mischievous side. They are easy for children to handle, if brought up around children who handle them regularly. Budgies' beaks are small enough that they may pinch a bit when they bite, but you can basically ignore it. They are very personable, and the males make quite good talkers if purchased when they are young and worked with. I have also found that males don't bite as hard as females, and so they may be a better choice for families with small children. Budgies are easy to sex when they're young, so picking out a male from a group of youngsters is less difficult than with other birds such as Cockatiels. When Budgies are very young, the cere (the skin around the nostrils) is a pale purple colour. At weaning age, which is about 5-6 weeks old, the males will begin to show patches of bluish colour on the cere and the females will have a more solid pink or beige tone to their ceres. At breeding age the female's cere colour turns a darker brown.

COMMON CONDITIONS OF PET BIRDS
General Information
Pet birds often become ill. While most diseases of birds can affect every species, there are some species that are more prone to develop certain conditions. By being familiar with the various conditions that commonly affect a certain species, your doctor is able to formulate a diagnostic and treatment protocol that is most likely to result in a correct diagnosis and cure for your bird's illness. While not listing every possible disease that may afflict your bird, the following discussion will make you more familiar with the specific problems your pet is most likely to encounter.
Budgerigars
Budgerigars or budgies are known for developing various solid external tumors as well as internal cancer. A common cancer affecting the kidneys or reproductive organs causes a unilateral (one-sided) lameness that owners often mistake for an injured leg. Knemidokoptic mange is a frequent cause of crusty dermatitis of the cere (area around the nostrils over the beak), face and feet. Thyroid disorders such as goiter and hypothyroidism occur in budgies. While not common in birds, budgerigars can become afflicted with diabetes mellitus. Chlamydiosis is a common cause of respiratory disease in these popular birds. Since many owners incorrectly feed an all seed diet to their budgies, hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) is a problem that often causes death in this species. While reproductive problems are not usually seen in most pet birds, egg binding is seen with some frequency in pet budgerigars, even those housed individually without a mate.

Keep them with their own kind. Most birds shouldn't be kept with other birds outside their species. ok, thanks a lot! i thought a budgie was a small yellow bird, because of a picture i once saw. it was in birds for dummies, and it was yellow, and i didn't think it looked anything like a parakeet. so, parakeets and budgies are the same thing? do you know if there is any bird that can be kept with a lovebird? You probably saw a canary or something.

Frequently Asked Questions
The following are questions that I frequently get via email/instant message from new owners.
  • What can I expect the first couple weeks?
Well, first, don't expect your bird to be an instant velcro bird who loves spending tons of time with you. If you wanted something like that, you should've gone for a puppy or a kitten.
For the first week it's recommended that you NOT try to handle the bird, and just let it be. Only enter the cage to change food, water, and cage paper. This is to give the bird some time to settle down and settle in to its new surroundings.
If your bird is shy, it may take a little while before he'll readily come to you.
NEVER push a bird too hard. Your bird will give very clear clues that whatever you're doing is frightening or upsetting him. A totally flat crest, hissing, head down/beak open, snapping at you, and/or biting are all signs of a frightened bird. If your new bird exhibits these behaviors and you don't back off with what you're doing, you'll get a well deserved bite.
If your bird becomes frightened when you're too near the cage, back off a little bit until he calms down, then just sit there(below his eye level, this makes him feel more secure) and talk to him quietly.

Each species of animal in a woodland, grassland, or other natural area depends on other living things in the environment for food. In a woodland, for example, some birds get their food mainly from plants. Others chiefly eat small animals, such as insects or earthworms. Birds and bird eggs, in turn, serve as food for such animals as foxes, raccoons, and snakes. The feeding relationships among all the animals in an environment help prevent any one species from becoming too numerous. Birds play a vital role in keeping this balance of nature.
Hummingbirds help flowers reproduce by spreading pollen from flower to flower.
Birds also serve other purposes in nature. Fruit-eating birds help spread seeds. The birds eat and digest the pulp of berries and other fruits but pass the seeds in their droppings. The seeds may sprout wherever the droppings fall. Hummingbirds pollinate certain flowers that produce nectar. Hummingbirds feed on nectar. As they visit flowers in search of it, they spread pollen from flower to flower.

This is perhaps one of the most coveted birds in aviculture. These South American beauties are often toted as the giants of the psittacine kingdom. While it is true that they are certainly the largest parrots, some Macaws are amongst the smallest parrots, as well. The Hahn's Macaw rivals a petite Aratinga Conure for size (~35cm). These birds are very intelligent and can be very comical and affectionate. However, Macaws are often known to challenge their owners for dominance and with such a large, threatening beaks this can be a intimidating at best. In Macaws, it is the smaller species which can be the most challenging. The giant Hyacinth Macaw is often called the most gentle of macaws (or even of the psittacines!) while the tiny Hahn's Macaw is known to be quite sassy and challenging.

Sunny's Budgerigars Page I'm Sunny, a cockatiel, and I share my home with some budgerigars (commonly called parakeets or budgies). Both cockatiels and budgies originally hail from Australia but have been bred by people for so long that we are considered domesticated. Pepper was the first and was a male green budgie. He moved in in 1996, a year before I did. My little master was 4 then. He was off shopping for chickens with his grandfather and desperately wanted one. Finally my mistress approached my master and they took him over to a cage full of parakeets. He was asked if he wanted a green chicken or a blue chicken and picked green. Pepper was their first bird and they learned an important lesson - know who you are buying from. Pepper had mites which caused his beak to grow incorrectly. By the time he finally saw a vet and had the mites cured it was permanently deformed. Pepper was very afraid of humans. He was ok around me though and during the occasional times he got let out he tries to stay near the area where I am. In the picture of us above he was trying millet for the very first time, he had always ignored it before. Chilly was the second budgie and moved in when she was still a baby in 1998. She is blue. She will stand on a human's finger and step from one finger to another but hasn't learned how to sit on a shoulder or understand what a pleasure it is to get your neck scratched. She also belongs to my little master and lived with Pepper. Chilly doesn't like me or Deli so she and Pepper moved to my little master's room. They were very happy together for several years, until Pepper died in October 2000.

    It's Bird Breeding Season
For those of you seeing avian patients, this time of year can provide some interesting challenges. With our patients eating healthy diets, and undergoing preventative health care, we are seeing hens becoming reproductively active at a young age. Some of the older literature suggests that most larger psittacines won't breed until they are 6-7 years of age. However, with optimum health, you can expect that many conures, Amazons, Eclectus, macaws, cockatoos, pionus, Poicephalus and cockatiels will breed by their second or third year. South American and Central American birds (considered New World birds) usually breed with increasing daylight hours. Most African birds breed with decreasing daylight hours, and most breeders set up their birds on Labor Day and consider Memorial Day the official end of their breeding season, although some pairs will breed year round. Eclectus and cockatoos tend to breed year round as well. Cockatiels usually breed with increasing daylight, but some may cycle year round. Cockatiels are indeterminate layers and will often continue to lay eggs to complete their clutch if the eggs are taken away as they are laid. However, budgerigars (parakeets or budgies) are determinate layers and often lay just 4, 6 or rarely 8 eggs to complete the clutch. Amazons, in particular, have an intense hormonal surge in the springtime, and often exhibit extreme behavioral changes at that time. Both males and females may become very possessive of their cages, and if allowed out of the cage, they often seek a dark closet, empty cardboard box, the dark areas of the home (cupboards, under the bed, empty paper bags). They may engage in "redecorating," chewing on wood moldings, chair legs, etc. They may attack any people that they consider to be threatening to their perceived human mate. Female Eclectus often seek out a dark area to "nest" in.

Choosing Your Bird: The Best Birds for Beginners
Adapted From: Birds For Dummies Always deal with a reputable breeder or bird store when shopping for a pet. Some pet retailers see birds as products to be sold as quickly and efficiently as possible. Rapid stock turnover may be good for profits, but not for pets. Deal with people who sell healthy, well-socialized birds and you can count on the best start to your relationship with your new pet.
    Canaries
This bird is perfect for beginners who aren't sure they want as much interaction as some other species require. The canary is happy to hang out in a cage and entertain you with beauty and song. In fact, they'd rather not be handled. Because they don't desire handling, the canary is a good children's pet, providing song and beauty and allowing youngsters to observe the wonder of birds close up.
    Finches
The finch is another hands-off bird, a little charmer who embodies the word "vivacious." Finches are flashy, fast moving, and fun to watch, with a lively, constant twittering that's considerably below the decibel level parrots are capable of attaining. Because they're perfectly content to live without handling, finches make good caged birds for an older child's room.
