64. Paraguay, A Culture Shock
A description of the places I ve been to and my opinions on them. Countries includeSouth Africa, paraguay, UK, USA, Italy and a few others.
http://www.gtcreations.com/splash/travels/py.html
In November 1987 I moved to Paraguay, South America. My parents had already been there for two years. I didn't speak Spanish but quickly got hold of a phrase book and started communicating.
Paraguay itself is vastly different from South Africa, where I grew up. I had to get accustomed to buying my vegetables at the market, which was a lot of rickety little tables in the open air market square. At first I lived in a large town called Caaguazú, where my father had started a sawmill and furniture factory. Most of the roads were dirt roads but downtown had some cobble and cement roads.
Then after 7 months I got a job teaching English at a British institute in the capital city, Asuncion. Later on I also started teaching aerobics . It was a whole lot more modern than the town I had got used to. Asuncion has some lovely shopping malls and modern supermarkets. Shopping downtown is interesting for they close from 12 to 3 p.m. for siesta, which means they roll down large steel shutters (which makes window-shopping impossible).
Transport is mainly by bus, which is dangerous but efficient as there are so many people in Paraguay who do not own a car. Driving in general is dangerous and it seems there is not much respect for life.

Due to the intermarriage of the Guarani Indian and Spanish civilization, Paraguay is a bilingual country, with aproximately 90% of its population speaking both languages. This historical process has also resulted in a mestizo culture which blends elements both Spanish and Guarani.
    CRAFTS:
    Aho-poi:
fine clothing hand woven and hand made. This linen cloth is embroidered with threads of the same color, generally white. The typical aho-poi is produced in Yataity. Aho-poi shirts, blouses, tablecloths and napkins, are in very great demand. Nanduti:
Made of industrialized fine cotton thread, with combinations of many colors, though the most traditional nanduti is white. It is used for centerpieces, mantles, and other display areas where the handwork and color combinations can be best apreciated. Ceramics:
Pottery is a popular craft known by the Indians, such as, for example the colombian method and finger moulding of humid clay. Today you will find the classical "cantaro" (bucket), vessels, and human figures for decoration. The clay gains natural colors through the aplication of oxides and firing techniques (red, toasted, black).
    GASTRONOMY:
In Paraguay, cuisine has a great home tradition, giving a delicious combination of meats and river fish, with a wide variety of fresh vegetables and fruits, which you can find throughout the year. The most popular dishes are based on corn, meat, milk and cheese. The main dishes are: Chipa Guazu, Bori-Bori, So'o-yosopy, Locro, Mbeyu, Puchero, Guiso, Mandioca and the famous and popular Chipa. The local drink preferred by Paraguayans is a locally produced dark rum, an alcoholic beverage made from sugar cane; and terere, an infusion of yerba mate (ilex paraguayensis) and cold water, sometimes flavored with medicinal herbs. It is served in guampas or mates (gourd) and sipped through a Bombilla which is a kind of metal straw.

by Noel King Augusto Roa Bastos and Hugo Gamarra Noel King currently teaches film in the Department of English, Journalism and European Languages at the University of Tasmania. Vou para casa I'm Going Home (Portugal/France, 2001). During the lunch-interview Hugo spoke about his background, film culture in Paraguay and his cinephile tastes.
-NK Noel King novel that persuaded you to try to make a career in film. Hugo Gamarra : My passion for film started with my grandfather (I was raised by my grandfather and grandmother) who was an obsessive filmgoer and who would carry me with him to the movies, when I was very little, where I would eventually fall asleep. He took me to the movies for the first time when I was one year old! Thanks to my grandfather I also learned as a child to enjoy comics and later read my first books: novels by Jules Verne, Paul Feval and Victor Hugo. I use my second last name as my surname in memory of him. Son of Man (Monthly Review Press, 1988). And somehow reading that book gave me the certainty that I could be a filmmaker. The book tells Paraguayan myths through human stories that are mythical, epic and yet related to Paraguayan landscapes and Paraguayan history, specifically the Chaco War of 1932-35

    mean for Paraguay?
by Hugo Gamarra Etcheverry Translated by Imogen Williams Augusto Roa Bastos in The Gate of Dreams Hugo Gamarra Etcheverry, aged 46, is a filmmaker, Director of the Asuncion International Film Festival and President of the Paraguayan Cinémathèque. This article was originally published in the Paraguayan newspaper, Diario Noticias on December 23 1995, as part of a series of articles dedicated to the 100 Years of Cinema celebrations. As the 20th century draws to a close, the first century of motion pictures, it is unthinkable that there could be countries without their own national cinemas. Just as individuals benefit from portraits or images of themselves, societies also need to have their own images projected on the screen in order to reflect on questions of identity, history and destiny; and to affirm the unique characteristics of their language, the way they are, how they express themselves and see the world. Nevertheless, for a country like ours, which is backward on all fronts, the cinema is barely given the attention of a distant spectator. Paraguay was a glaring absence in the retrospectives that marked celebrations of the first century of cinema throughout the world. It is a nation without moving images, an invisible country in an age of civilization distinguished by mass audio-visual imagery, narrative and storytelling.

Being an American homosexual in Paraguay
by Carrie Coy While I was living in Paraguay last year, the Bowling Alley - a Favorite dancing spot for Peace Corps volunteers was shut down by the government on the grounds that it was a haven for "drug addicts and homosexuals." The move surprised no one, least of all volunteers who for the most part shrugged and danced elsewhere from then on. Whether the change was legitimate or whether there was a qualitative difference between a drug addict and a homosexual hardly seemed to matter. Homophobia is such a pervasive, accepted aspect of Paraguayan culture that being gay and being communist are considered the country's two greatest sins - both ample grounds for imprisonment or exile. When Aldo Zuccolillo, editor of the country's most Popular, suspended newspaper, received a Prestigious journalism prize in New York last October, the nightly state-sponsored radio station congratulated him for receiving an award from the association of homosexual Latin American journalists, and suggested he might also have AIDS. Obviously the much-touted abandon with which Latin Americans, specifically Paraguayans, kiss and touch each other does not reflect any open-mindedness toward homosexuality. In fact, it is probably only because being gay is so unthinkable that being demonstrative is as safe.
