    Asuncion - Culture
Asuncion, the capital and largest city, is built on unassuming hills above the east bank of the Rio Paraguay. Most of the city's key sights are found within an area bound by the riverfront, Avenida Colon in the west, calles Haedo and Luis A Herrera in the south, and Estados Unidos to the east. There are few colonial remains and little attempt at zoning, so the city has become a jumble of new, eclectic buildings and squatter settlements along the riverfront and the railway. Asuncion has many beautiful large parks and flowering trees. Adjacent to the river, the buildings are colonial in style - one story with a patio - but the centre of town consists of modern high-rise buildings. The cathedral, presidential palace, and Pantheon of Heroes (a smaller replica of the Invalides in Paris), all built in the 19th century, and the ultramodern Hotel Guarani, designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, are among the notable buildings. As the seat of the national government, and of the archbishop of Paraguay, Asuncion dominates social, cultural, and economic trends in Paraguay. Several institutions of higher education, including the Universidad Nacional de Asuncion (1890) and the Universidad Catolica "Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion" (1960), are located in Asuncion. Asuncion is the principal distributing and export centre of the most densely populated region of Paraguay. Cotton, sugarcane, corn (maize), tobacco, fruit, and cattle products from the rich agricultural and pastoral hinterland are processed in the capital. Industrial plants produce textiles, vegetable oils, footwear, flour, small river craft, and tobacco products. A piped water system was inaugurated in 1955. River steamers, mostly of foreign ownership, are the principal means of transporting freight. The city is also the terminus of the Ferrocarril (railway) Presidente Carlos Antonio Lopez, which connects with the Argentine rail systems via a train ferry across the Parana River at Encarnacion. Another ferry connection across the Paraguay River provides trunk-road communication with Buenos Aires. Asuncion also has an international airport. Pop. (1982 prelim.) 455,517.

    About this Guide
Destination: Paraguay offers a closer view of this land of rivers, a landlocked republic in the heart of South America. A small nation, Paraguay shares borders with the continent's two largest countries, Brazil and Argentina. Paraguay's history and culture have been shaped by its geography. The activities in this guide emphasize the interaction between the people and their beloved land. Most can be adapted to the study of any country and culture. The activities in this guide have been grouped into three academic levels: grades 3-5, grades 6-9, and grades 10-12. The six basic themes of geography serve as the fundamental organizing structure of the units. The themes and the national geography standards based on each are found on page 3 of this guide. Each activity is coded by number to the standards to which it best relates.
