The use of leisure time has become an ever greater focus of attention,as a result of higher incomes, expanding leisure time and a growing interest in nature. The trend is reflected in the increasing popularity of sports and recreational activities in the prefecture. Fukushima's abundant nature, combined with extensive leisure facilities, attracts sports and leisure-minded youth and adults, from both inside and outside the prefecture year-round. There are three national parks and eleven prefectural natural parks in Fukushima, providing excellent opportunities for sports and leisure activities that cannot be enjoyed in urban areas. A number of golf courses, located in the Naka-dori and Hama-dori regions, take full advantage of extensive land areas and superb natural settings. Each year, the Naka]dori and Aizu regions see a rise in the number of ski resorts, featuring resort hotels and other facilities. And,as one of the most attractive hot spring areas in Japan, the prefecture draws a large number of visitors from around the country. The prefecture is upgrading and enlarging its high-quality resort facilities to meet the demand for increased leisure opportunities, while at the same time giving full consideration to nature preservation. Examples of recently developed leisure activities include boating, yachting and marine sports on Lake Inawashiro and off the Pacific Coast, paragliding, and family auto-camping in the mountains of the Aizu region.

GUIDANCE ISSUED ON NON-AGRICULTURAL LAND USE Defra has today published guidance on the types of non-agricultural activities allowed during the ten month qualifying period for the Single Payment Scheme. Announcing the launch of the Guidance Note, Minister for Food and Farming Larry Whitty said: "The Single Payment Scheme will put farmers and other land managers at the forefront of efforts to develop thriving and sustainable rural communities. In drawing up this indicative list of activities, we have been mindful of the need to balance business diversification opportunities with the necessity to abide by the rules on eligibility of land under the scheme. We believe that this guidance strikes a good balance" Activities allowed without restriction under the new guidance include walking, bird spotting, fishing, horse riding and school and university farm visits. Defra will include the new guidance in a supplement to the SPS Booklet that will be sent to all farmers and growers that have previously submitted an IACS claim or have applied to receive an SPS application form.

The active visitor to Slovakia has a wide choice of sporting experiences available.
Outdoor
Families enjoy a variety of activities:
  • Slovakia has a multitude of hiking trails, some of which lead to the very peaks of the Tatra mountains or through river gorges in deep primeval forests. Skiing Cross-country skiing is best supported in Strbske Pleso in the High Tatras, but many other regions also have some trails, rentals and other facilities. In some areas, canoeing is gentle enough to be a family activity. Bicycles can be rented in the main vacation areas, such as the High Tatras. Aquaparks are springing up, with the first large facility near Liptovsky Mikulas (an hour west of the High Tatras), but others planned in and near Bratislava
Indoor and Other Recreational Sports
Facilities are also improving for traditional participant sports as well. Although the facilities are usually not world-class, they give some satisfaction:
  • Fitness centres are now very common; some are simple, others are equipped with most facilities found in western Europe
