New Guinea has been inhabited by various peoples from throughout Asia for some 10,000 years. Its recorded history began with the visits of Portuguese explorers in the early 16th century, followed by Dutch traders. The Dutch East India Company took control of the western half of the island, which became a colonial possession attached to the Dutch East Indies in 1828. The territory was then split between the British and Germans in the 1880s until after World War I, when it was transferred in its entirety to the control of Australia, endorsed by a United Nations mandate. Most of it was occupied by the Japanese during World War II.

The Independent State of Papua New Guinea (informally, Papua New Guinea or PNG ) is a country in Oceania , occupying the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and numerous offshore islands (the Indonesian provinces of Papua (Indonesian province) and West Irian Jaya ( Irian Jaya Barat occupy the western half of New Guinea). It is located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean , in a region defined since the early 19th century as Melanesia . Its capital and one of its few major cities is Port Moresby . It is one of the most diverse places on Earth. There are over 700 indigenous languages and at least as many indigenous societies, out of a population of just over 5 million. It is also one of the most rural, with only 18% living in urban centers The majority of the population live in indigenous societies and practice subsistence-based agriculture . These societies and clans have some degree of distinct acknowledgement within the nation's constitutional framework. The PNG Constitution (Preamble 5(4)) expresses the wish for traditional villages and communities to remain as viable units of Papua New Guinean society , and for active steps to be taken in their preservation. The PNG legislature has enacted various laws in which a type of tenure called "

Local people have gone from being 'natives' to 'nationals,' and one promising response to this is to look into the ways in which a new national culture is being put together, a topic recently explored by Robert Foster and his colleagues (see Foster (ed.) 1995). Here, following Anderson (1983), one strategy is to seek out the ways in which a collective imagination is constituted, 'naturalizing' the nation in the process. But while this approach opens up questions about a generic or Pidgin culture (Filer 1985, Hirsch 1990, Philibert 1986, Siegel 1984, Zimmer-Tamakoshi 1993), other issues remain in the less thoroughly explored space between the nation and the small communities that constitute it.(3)

12. The site for the school at Duranmin is said to have been determined by a dream or vision Diyos had. Expatriate missionaries were initially reluctant to endorse this site because the surrounding population was very sparse and its suitability for an airstrip is marginal. In the end Diyos's vision prevailed, and it is worth noting that Diyos has maternal kin in Duranmin. Kinship ties across lines of traditional enmity resulted from the abduction of enemy women who were incorporated into their captors' groups. It has now become commonplace to follow up such ties in ways that would have been very difficult in the days of warfare. Don Gardner (pers. comm.) informs me that Miyanmin at Yapsiei who would formerly have regarded Diyos as an enemy spoke of Diyos with pride and related how he had declined the Queen's invitation to save the British from further spiritual decline in order to devote his efforts to the salvation of all Min.

Ancient heritage, modern society
Lake Mungo, south-west New South Wales: Australian scientists have discovered skeletal remains possibly as old as 60 000 years Before the arrival of European settlers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples inhabited most areas of the Australian continent. Each people spoke one or more of hundreds of separate languages, with lifestyles and cultural traditions that differed according to the region in which they lived. Their complex social systems and highly developed traditions reflect a deep connection with the land and environment. Asian and Oceanic mariners and traders were in contact with Indigenous Australians for many centuries before the European expansion into the Eastern Hemisphere. Some formed substantial relationships with communities in northern Australia.
European settlement
Peter Luxton/Tourism Tasmania The first recorded European contact with Australia was in March 1606, when Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon (c.1570 - 1630) charted the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, Queensland. Later that year, the Spanish explorer Luis Vaez de Torres sailed through the strait separating Australia and Papua New Guinea. Over the next two centuries, European explorers and traders continued to chart the coastline of Australia, then known as New Holland. In 1688, William Dampier became the first British explorer to land on the Australian coast. It was not until 1770 that another Englishman, Captain James Cook, aboard the Endeavour, extended a scientific voyage to the South Pacific in order to further chart the east coast of Australia and claim it for the British Crown.

Archeological evidence indicates that humans arrived on New Guinea at least 60,000 years ago, probably by sea from Southeast Asia during an Ice Age period when the sea was lower and distances between islands shorter. Although the first arrivals were hunters and gatherers, early evidence shows that people managed the forest environment to provide food. There also are indications of gardening having been practiced at the same time that agriculture was developing in Mesopotamia and Egypt. Early garden cropsmany of which are indigenousincluded sugarcane, Pacific bananas, yams, and taros, while sago and pandanus were two commonly exploited native forest crops. Today's staplessweet potatoes and pigsare later arrivals, but shellfish and fish have long been mainstays of coastal dwellers' diets. When Europeans first arrived, inhabitants of New Guinea and nearby islandswhile still relying on bone, wood, and stone toolshad a productive agricultural system. They traded along the coast, where products mainly were pottery, shell ornaments, and foodstuffs, and in the interior, where forest products were exchanged for shells and other sea products. The first Europeans to sight New Guinea were probably the Portuguese and Spanish navigators sailing in the South Pacific in the early part of the 16th century. In 1526-27, Don Jorge de Meneses accidentally came upon the principal island and is credited with naming it "Papua," a Malay word for the frizzled quality of Melanesian hair. The term "New Guinea" was applied to the island in 1545 by a Spaniard, Ynigo Ortis de Retez, because of a fancied resemblance between the islands' inhabitants and those found on the African Guinea coast. Although European navigators visited the islands and explored their coastlines for the next 170 years, little was known of the inhabitants until the late 19th century.

The ABC's first major involvement in Papua New Guinea was during World War II. ABC war correspondents were based in Port Moresby and covered fighting across the Pacific region. The ABC also provided programs to Radio 9PA, the station set up by the Army to broadcast to Allied forces in the New Guinea campaign. Australian Army Captain Robin Wood (left) officer-in-charge of 9PA, with US Army Captain Edgar L. Tidwell also attached to the station, in 1944. Robin Wood later became ABC Federal Director of Programme Services. It would probably be safe to say that no station of its size ever had such tremendous resources upon which to draw for its programmes. The ABC, BBC, Australian Commercial Stations and the American Department of Information all made available transcriptions of their best programmes, and consequently the forces were extremely well supplied with entertainment.

In 1606, Spanish explorer Diego de Prado reports that turtleshell masks are in use in the Torres Straits Islands between Australia and New Guinea. At the headwaters of the Karawari River in New Guinea, the ancestors of the Ewa people begin to create a remarkable series of wooden figures, or aripa . Stored in caves following the death of their owners, they are the oldest known surviving examples of wood sculpture from New Guinea. In Island Melanesia, explorers continue to make contact with its diverse arts and cultures. In 1643, Isaac Gilsemans, an artist accompanying the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, creates an image of a group of New Irelanders in a canoe with elaborately sculpted prow and stern ornaments, the earliest record of New Ireland's intricately crafted wood carving traditions. The drawings made and objects collected during the second voyage of English explorer James Cook in 1774 also offer tantalizing glimpses of the artistic traditions then flourishing in New Caledonia and Vanuatu.
The earliest surviving wooden images from New Guinea are carved near the headwaters of the Karawari River.
