Harbin was the first British illusionist to move from stage performing to television, with his own show which began in . He developed a number of new tricks, including the "Neon Light" and the now ubiquitous "Zig-Zag Girl" (1953) illusions. In about Harbin appeared in a minor part as a magician in the film The Limping Man , produced by Cy Enfield . In , Harbin and a friend of Enfield, Gershon Legman (1917-1999), discovered a common interest in the Japanese art of paper-folding. Harbin wrote many books on the subject, beginning with Paper Magic (illustrated by the young art student, the Australian Rolf Harris who in the middle of the project, caught the origami idea and contributed several intricate models himself) in , and was the first President of the British Origami Society . He was the first Westerner to use the word origami for this art-form. He also presented a series of origami programmes for

WHAT IS ORIGAMI WHAT IS ORIGAMI Origami is the Japanese word for paper folding. ORI means to fold and KAMI means paper. Together, they form the word, "origami." It is an art form that has been handed down from parent to child through many generations. Origami involves the creation of paper forms usually entirely by folding. Animals, birds, fish, geometric shapes, puppets, toys and masks are among the models that even very young children can learn to make in just one sitting.
    HISTORY
THE CRANE WHO WERE THE FIRST PAPER FOLDERS? ORIGAMI SYMBOLS HISTORY The art of making paper from pulp originated in China in the year 102A.D. Paper then became more available to the masses. The secret of making paper was kept in China for several hundred years and finally made its way through Korea and into Japan. A Buddhist monk is said to have carried this secret .The introduction of paper making to Japan several hundred years later coincided with the development of their religion and soon became part of the lives of its people. Colors and silk threads were added and origami was held in high esteem. Gifts were decorated with "noshi." Noshi had particular fold patterns depending on the gift. In Japan, at one time origami was taught in schools but today, children are generally taught origami at home. Holidays are celebrated with colorful origami decorations made by the family. On children's day (formerly boy's day), children make colorful carp: a fish that swims upstream, against the current. This symbolizes strength. During the summer, Tanabata, The Star Festival is celebrated. Live bamboo branches are decorated with origami stars and other paper decorations in a manner which brings to mind a decorated Christmas tree.

    Origami Records and Curiosities
    by John Smith
I have always enjoyed reading about the biggest and smallest of almost anything. Naturally, I enjoy the Guinness Book of Records (or superlatives). At odd times I have been collecting origami records and I thought it about time I exposed my collection to the fierce gaze of the Internet. I would welcome corrections, updates or new entries. In addition to records I have this time included curiosities. These are not necessarily records, but are of interest. My thanks are due to Ralf Lane of Leipzig for some new world record contributions.
    Model folded from largest square
Square 33m by 33m used to fold a crane. Maebashi, Gunma Pref. Japan, October 30th 1995. Reported by Joseph Wu. [From an article in the Japan Times . JW]
Jim Mockford, a Japanese language teacher in Washington State, USA, reports that in the fall of 1995 a class of 20 of his students made an ori-tsuru (paper crane), out of a single sheet of paper that measured over 23 feet wingtip to wingtip. Of course there have been larger cranes made from many sheets of paper pasted together such as the Maebashi record (see above), but Jim's crane seems to be the largest made out of a single square sheet of uncut, unpasted paper. It was a great teambuilding project and a lot of fun.
    Largest banger
Paul Jackson, in November, 1980 at the University College, London, successfully folded and banged the classic model made from a paper rectangle 108 ins. by 66 ins. See report in the BOS magazine no. 86, pages 14 and 15.

Creating A Balance Inspired by the book "Sadako and The Thousand Paper Cranes"
    Author: Eleanor Coerr

In the Japanese Culture, The Crane is symbolic of health, hapiness, and peace. Legend has it that if you fold 1000 cranes your wish or prayer will be granted.
In the times we live, every day human conflict spreads and grows more severe, the environment grows more threatened. There is an overwhelming need to establish harmony in our world. We have to "Create a Balance".
The White, Yellow, Red and Black cranes were adapted from a different 1000 crane mobile created in 1992, as 1 of 10, for the Winnipeg International Children's Festival 10th anniversary by Children of the Earth School. They represent the North, East, West and South. The many-coloured cranes were chosen to represent all the people of the earth, the three levels of the mobile to represent, the air, land and water. The mobile to represent "Creating A Balance".
With our world and environment in ever increasing chaos and conflict, we have folded these cranes as a symbol of our prayer, that though events such as these, that all the peoples of the world will try to "Create A Balance" so we may all enjoy "Peace, Good Health and Happiness".
Here flies 1000 cranes as a gentle reminder for all to do their part in "Creating A Balance"
    Program
"Creating A Balance" is a 1 or 2 week long workshop that introduces students to the Art of Origami as a means of making a creative statement. Brian presents a history of the art of paper folding through storytelling and demonstrations. The students, through their creative efforts create a mobile sculpture. This brings the whole school together for a presentation focusing on the idea of "Creating A Balance" with nature, the environment and with each other.
