RAYMOND F. BONNER, "International Business Is Booming for Small U.S. Arms Dealers," New York Times, June 6, 1998
The Solomon Islands, a tiny country in the Pacific with a population of 400,000, has no army and a police force of barely a thousand including traffic cops. But last summer the government purchased enough equipment to outfit a small combat unit including assault rifles, machine guns, helmets, boots and two small airplanes from a U.S. company. At the Pentagon and the U.S. Customs Service, officials expressed misgivings about the sale, fearing that the weapons and the gear were destined for rebels in nearby Papau, New Guinea. Others argued that it would be better for the Solomon Islands to invest in health and education. Australia and New Zealand also opposed the deal, believing it was irresponsible to be bringing more weapons into the region. But the State Department accepted that the arms were necessary for the police and issued the necessary licenses. Since then, a newly elected government in the Solomon Islands, suspicious about the motives for the arms deal, has launched an investigation and tried to cancel it. While the sale to the Solomon Islands is military peanuts only $3.4 million it offers a window into the workings of the small arms trade which has equipped terrorist organizations and civil wars from Afghanistan to Rwanda. Within the U.S. government, arguments that such sales might fuel an ethnic conflict, or go to a government with a poor human rights record, are routinely drowned out by arguments that the deal will be good for U.S. business and improve relations with other countries, U. S. officials say.

Letters from our readers
26 January 2005 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author The following is a selection of recent letters received by the World Socialist Web Site. On As we watched on television the caravan of war criminals riding in blackened-out limos, taking place with snow on the ground and during an overcast day in Washington, D.C., we realized that this scene was not an inauguration event but rather a funeral procession. The occasion was the death of democracy in the US. Thanks for your excellent coverage and helping towards a true augury of the rebirth of human rights and freedom on the planet. SZ 21 January 2005 Albuquerque, New Mexico I am a senior reporter at Daily Times in Pakistan and was greatly inspired by your article. In an era when the mainstream media obliterates truth and serves corporate interests unabashedly, we need courageous and objective writers like you. SH 21 January 2005 Karachi, Pakistan

    Details
Europeans first arrived in Papua New Guinea in the 16th century, and it was subsequently settled in the 19th century by both the Germans and British. Long governed by Australia in modern times, it finally gained its full independence in 1975.
Papua New Guinea includes the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, the islands of the Bismarck Archipelago, and the island of Bougainville, itself still ( politically ) part of the Solomon Islands.
The central core of the main island is mountainous with deep, green valleys dotted with mysterious and remote villages. There are still no significant cross-country roads from the capital city, and most vital transportation depends on small aircraft and the over 400 isolated airports.
Much of the inland population lives in primitive conditions and there are over 700 different languages spoken among the various native tribes.
