PANTHEISM AND THE GOLDEN RULE By Gary Suttle
What wisdom can you find that is greater than kindness? Jean-Jacques Rousseau
The Golden Rule exemplifies human kindness, cooperation, and reciprocity. Many religions expound the renowned rule in one way or another: Buddhism: A clansman (should) minister to his friends and familiars...by treating them as he treats himself. Christianity: As ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. Confucianism: What you do not want done to yourself, do not do unto others. Hinduism: Do naught to others which, if done to thee, would cause thee pain: this is the sum of duty. Judaism: Take heed to thyself, my child, in all thy works; and be discreet in all thy behavior. And what thou thyself hatest, do to no man. Pantheism similarly heeds the Golden Rule. Pantheists strive to treat others as they wish themselves to be treated, but their warmheartedness spreads beyond humankind Pantheists agree with those who extend the Golden Rule to relations with other life forms and the Earth itself. Showing kindness and consideration to other creatures and to the environment is the natural thing to do (interestingly, the word "kind" comes from the Old English word "gecynde" which means "natural").

Zen Pantheism
What the heck do I mean by the term Zen Pantheism?
This magazine article, sent to me by my sister and found in the March 1998 issue of "Unity", is a good illustration of what I mean. It is authored by James Dillet Freeman and is titled "Life is a Wonder", from his book The Hilltop Heart:Reflections of a Practical Mystic.
One morning in my garden I asked God to bless every living thing. And God asked, "But what is not a living thing?"
First of all I thought of air-invisible, inert. But the air leapt into my mouth and became my living breath. The air became the red of my blood and in the secret furnace of my cells the air became the fire of life itself.
Then I thought of water-colorless, inert. But drinking the water, I thought, "What is this body that drank the water? Is it not itself mainly water? This water that I drank is now the essence of my blood and tissues. When, then, is water merely water and when is it water of life?"
Then I thought of earth-brown, inert. "Earth, "I thought, "is not living, "and I kicked at the clods under my feet turned green and put forth leaf and stem and flower and the grain ripened in the ear. I took the ear, ground it, made bread out of it, and ate the bread. And the bread became the very stuff of myself, so that I could not separate that which was me and that which was earth. This which now was me had but a short time before been the clods of earth that I had kicked with my feet. "Surely, "I thought, "there is something that is not living. "I thought of stones. But even with the thought I sensed the stirring in the stone, and I knew that the immovable, changeless stones were changing and moving, flowing no less than rivers, to become the living pith and bone of creatures yet unborn.

Pantheism is the view that Nature and God are one, that the world is divine. Pantheism is considered to be atheism by those who posit a transcendent and separate source of the world. Thus, many Christian theologians and philosophers consider Hinduism and Buddhism, as well as the philosophy of Spinoza , to be atheistic. See also naturalism and god further reading

in
Saunders, T. Bailey. "A Few Words on Pantheism." Religion: A Dialogue and Other Essays . New York: Macmillian and Co., 1891. 55-58.
THE, controversy between Theism and Pantheism might be presented in an allegorical or dramatic form by supposing a dialogue between two persons in the pit of a theatre at Milan during the performance of a piece. One of them, convinced that he is in Girolamo's renowned marionette-theatre, admires the art by which the director gets up the dolls and guides their movements. "Oh, you are quite mistaken," says the other, "we're in the Teatro della Scala; it is the manager and his troop who are on the stage; they are the persons you see before you; the poet too is taking a part." The chief objection I have to Pantheism is that it says nothing. To call the world "God" is not to explain it; it is only to enrich our language with a superfluous synonym for the word "world." It comes to the same thing whether you say "the world is God," or "God is the world." But if you start from "God" as something that is given in experience, and has to be explained, and then say, "God is the world," you are affording what is to some extent an explanation, in so far as you are reducing what is unknown to what is partly known ( ignotum per notius ); but it is only a verbal explanation. If, however, you start from what is really given, that is to say, from the world, and say, "the world is God," it is clear that you say nothing, or at least you are explaining what is unknown by what is more unknown.

A Response To "Scientific Pantheism"
by Gary Suttle
Paul Harrison writes with cogency and grace on many aspects of pantheism. I find much of his work illuminating and valuable, yet I dislike his coinage "scientific pantheism" and I question the meaning of the term and its value in spreading pantheism to a wider audience. The label "scientific pantheism" highlights the religion's "scientific approach to reality" (Pantheist Vision, Vol. 17, No. 4). But to me the term brings to mind people who try to validate their less-than-scientific activities by employing "science" in their name , e.g. "scientology, "creation science" and "scientific creationism." Pantheism needs no adjective tacked on to bolster its credibility. Pantheism perforce embraces the scientific method and the religion's increasing prominence stems in part from its perfect compatibility with the latest findings of science. The tag "scientific pantheism" also implies a superiority over other types of (unscientific?) pantheism. But I think the many forms of pantheism and related spiritualities that instill a reverence for Nature have their place (the Earth and non-human inhabitants need all the help they can get). Condescension, intended or not, is counterproductive. On another level, putting "scientific" in front of pantheism does a disservice to pantheism. Why? Because science and its handmaiden modern technology wreak havoc on the planet. Nuclear bombs and radiation poisoning, to name but one of thousands of banes, lead thoughtful persons to argue that modern science has done more harm than good. Certainly science plays an important role in our lives. But I think pantheism preceded science and exceeds science. Aligning the religion too closely with the good, the bad, and the ugly of science tarnishes the brilliance of pantheism.

Pantheism
Pantheism is the doctrine that the universe conceived of as a whole is God and, conversely, that there is no God but the combined substance, forces, and laws that are manifested in the existing universe. The cognate doctrine of panentheism asserts that God includes the universe as a part though not the whole of his being. The adjective pantheist was coined by the rationalist freethinker John Toland in his book Socinianism Truly Stated The noun pantheism was first used a few years later by one of Toland's opponents. K.C.F. Krause introduced the term panentheism in 1828 as a designation for his own philosophy. Both of these terms have been applied retrospectively to aspects of numerous philosophical traditions, both Eastern and Western. There are several discernible types of Pantheism, ranging from those that attribute consciousness to nature as a whole (panpsychism) to those that interpret the world as merely an appearance and ultimately unreal (acosmic pantheism), and from the rational Neoplatonic, or emanationistic, strain to the intuitive, mystical strain. A mingling of these types characterizes Hindu and Buddhist doctrines; pantheism of one form or another is deeply rooted in the Vedas, the Upanisads, and the Bhagavadgita. Numerous Greek philosophers, notably Xenophanes, Heracleitus, Anaxagoras, Plato, Plotinus, and the proponents of Stoicism, contributed to the foundations of Western pantheism.

Although the Gaia hypothesis extends the ecological idea by applying it to the Eart as an ecosystem and offers a holistic approach to nature, Lovelock supports technology and industrialization and is an opponent of 'back to nature' mysticism and ideas such as Earth worship. Welcome to The Universal Pantheist Society! Are You a Pantheist? Pantheists are persons who derive their fundamental religious experience through their personal relationship with the Universe. They feel that Nature is the ultimate context for human existence, and seek to improve their relationship with the natural world as their fundamental religious responsibility. Religion is seen as a system of reverent behavior toward the Earth rather than subscription to a particular creed. Because Pantheists identify God with Nature rather than an anthropomorphic being, Pantheists oppose the arrogant world-view of anthropocentrism. This web site contains a collection of materials about Pantheism and Pantheists. About the Universal Pantheist Society Despite a long religious history, dating back beyond Spinoza to the Stoics of ancient Greece and the philosophers of ancient India, there has been no modern organization to represent Pantheists until the formation of the Universal Pantheist Society in 1975. The Universal Pantheist Society is the oldest known organization dedicated to modern and ethical Pantheism. Today, the need for an ethical Pantheism has never been greater. The formation of the Universal Pantheist Society was based on the need to communicate an informed, modern Pantheism, and to provide for sharing among Pantheists.

Pantheism seems to be the natural "religion" for Heretics; if religion it can be called. It is of course, an "Ideology" older than Paganism; and its tenets have been present, in the background, since the beginning of consciousness in mankind. The order of Pantheism I have aligned myself with is "Scientific Pantheism". Not because I have been converted or felt a need to have an affiliation with a religion, but because it reflects MY beliefs. This is MY ideology. Some one was just kind enough to name it for me. Thanks Paul :) Most of its members feel the same way and that is its great appeal. Knowing there are people of like mind out there, is good feeling. Among our numbers are Scientists, Heretics, Pagans, Wicca, Buddhists, Taoists, Atheists, Naturalists, Unitarians, and even Ex-Catholics and Ex-Jews. Introduction to Pantheism
The word pantheism derives from the Greek words pan (='all') and theos (='God'). Thus pantheism means 'All is God'. In essence, pantheism holds that there is no divinity other than the universe and nature. Pantheism is a religious belief that reveres and cares for nature, a religion that joyously accepts this life as our only life, and this earth as our only paradise, if we look after it. Pantheism revels in the beauty of nature and the night sky, and is full of wonder at their mystery and power. Pantheism believes that all things are linked in profound unity ... All things interconnected and interdependent. In life and in death we humans are an inseparable part of this unity, and in realising this we can find our joy and our peace. (

Pantheism (meaning All is God) offers a positive ecological philosophy to our current destructive and isolated world. Pantheism is the religious belief in the divinity of Nature and that we humans are part of the One, interconnected whole. It is in realising our connection to the One Universe (Nature, God, Brahman, Tao, Space) that we find truth, spiritual fulfillment and solace. The Tao te Ching is the oldest scripture of Taoism. It was composed during the warring states period when China descended into a chaos of rival kingdoms, some time between the sixth and the fourth or third centuries BC. It was supposedly written by Lao Tan, a possibly mythical figure, said to have lived till he was 160 or 200 years old. The classical Chinese historian Ssuma Chien says the work was by Li Erh, a custodian of imperial archives from the state of Ch'u in southern China, in the present province of Honan. This was a fertile, well-watered state. "Its people make little exertion, delight in life, and neglect to store anything." Li Erh was no seeker after fame. "The chief aim of his studies was how to keep himself concealed and remain unknown." says Ssuma Chien. Li Erh wrote his ideas only because, as he was heading into retirement, the royal gatekeeper pleaded with him to record his ideas before he disappeared into oblivion. He may have written the book under the pseudonym Lao Tan to avoid attention.

Just wanted to say that Pantheism isn't just thinking nature is god, it's more the believe that the Universe is god. Believing that people would also be god is not a 'request' for pantheism. And I also need to disappoint you with the fact that Pantheism isn't New Age (at least, in your description of New Age) Also, saying that Pantheism is without reason isn't right as well (I am pantheist because of reason) Overall, Pantheism is the definition of people who believe in that the universe is divine, it's therefore more an extension to Deism.

The Netherlands - Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at 07:31:33 (PDT) Thanks Atresica. Referring to New Age Religion from http://www.religioustolerance.org/ in their article that listed New Age beliefs: "Pantheism: All that exists is God; God is all that exists. This leads naturally to the concept of the divinity of the individual, that we are all Gods. They do not seek God as revealed in a sacred text or as exists in a remote heaven; they seek God within the self and throughout the entire universe." Pantheism is not an extension of Deism but the polar opposite of Deism. Nobody said a pantheist is without reason but New Age religion is a rejection of reason in favor of "inner feelings" whatever that amounts to. Pantheism goes back to the ancient Greek Stoics and is a forerunner to Deism says Leo Rosten's
