Apologetics in the New Age: A Christian Critique of Pantheism
David K. Clark and Norman L. Geisler. Baker Book House, Grand Rapids, MI, 1990, 254 pages.
Reviewer: The Rev. Richard L. Dowhower
The truth claims of new religious movements and psychotechnologies have been essentially ignored in public by the anti-cult movement in its initial decade and a half. Persons of varied theologies and shared goodwill aimed their counterattacks at the human-rights-violating practices of the cults. Fraud, deception, denial of informed consent, ritual abuse, involuntary servitude, economic exploitation, sexual abuse, mistreatment of children, and other forms of religious malpractice provided the focus. But in the privacy of deprogramming and exit counseling sessions, the incongruities and self-contradictions of cult truth claims played an important role in the discrediting of the groups and their gurus. Truth claims were a potent issue.

It is the view that everything is of an all-encompassing immanent God; or that the universe, or nature, and God are equivalent. More detailed definitions tend to emphasize the idea that natural law existence and/or the universe (the sum total of all that is was and shall be) is represented or personified in the theological principle of 'God'.

History
The term "pantheist" — of which the word "pantheism" is a variation — was purportedly first used by Irish writer John Toland in his work, Socinianism Truly Stated, by a pantheist . However, the concept has been discussed as far back as the time of the philosophers of Ancient Greece . Some, such as Heraclites , debated whether the entire substance of the universe was a force of logic, of thought in constant state of transformation. edit

Adherents feel Naturalistic Pantheism might best be understood through the teachings of Spinoza and Taoism historically, and the Universal Pantheist Society (UPS) and World Pantheist Movement (WPM) today. Although the UPS is the older of the two, it has seen decreased activity in recent years. The WPM (founded by former UPS vice-president Paul Harrison ), on the other hand, has expanded more considerably due to its promotion of 'Scientific Pantheism', which many critics claim is essentially no more than " atheism for nature lovers." This charge seems to stem from the fact that 'scientific pantheism' is not only naturalistic , but avowedly materialistic as well, with little tolerance for any reference to traditional theological concepts. Despite a history of controversy ignited by the WPM's appearance as a sect within the UPS and its eventual secession from that organization, the WPM approach has met with some acceptance, even while critics claim it may not actually constitute any strict or authentic or

I think God is as much a basic ingredient in the universe as neutrons and positrons. This is the prime force, when we look around the universe.
The starship Excelsior Gene Roddenberry, the legendary creator of Star Trek, was born in El Paso, Texas, in 1921. He studied law, then switched to aeronautical engineering and trained as a pilot. In 1941 he volunteered for the US Army Air Corps, and won medals for bombing missions from Guadalcanal. After the war he became a pilot for Pan Am. After seeing television for the first time, he decided to become a TV writer, but when he found no openings, he joined the Los Angeles Police Department and rose to sergeant. He wrote TV scripts in his spare time, then went freelance. He was the chief writer for several TV series before launching Star Trek in 1966. Roddenberry became anti-religious at an early age. As a youth he attended Baptist church, but it was not till he was sixteen that he began to pay any real attention to what the sermons were saying: I remember complete astonishment because what they were talking about were things that were just crazy. It was Communion time where you eat this wafer and you are eating the body of Christ and drinking His blood. My first impression was "Jesus Christ, this is a bunch of cannibals they've put me down among . . . I guess from that time it was clear to me that religion as largely nonsense, was largely magical, superstitious things. [Alexander pp 36- 37.]

Every person out there who identifies them self as a pagan has a different view on what we, as a community, should be doing to educate the public at large and to fight for our rights. At one end of the spectrum you have the Asatruar who'd like to take up their axes, fortify their walls, and tell the Religious Right "Nuts." At the other end you've got the White-light Fluffy-bunny Wiccans/Pagans who believe very sincerely that if we are calm and loving then we can educate our enemies and make them love and accept us. And of course, as with everything else in the Pagan universe you have every shade of grey in between. Though not a follower of the Norse gods I am a cantankerous and non-pacifistic individual. While I believe that education is necessary, I am not an educator. While I believe that most people are fair and open-minded, I know that there are those who are not. I'll leave our communities' teachers to teaching while I take up my sword and spear, and stand between them and those who would deny us our rights, deprive us of our freedoms or harm those we love. God is one, that is, only one substance can be granted in the universe. Whatsoever is, is in God, and without God nothing can be, or be conceived.
Spinoza was born in Amsterdam in 1632, into a family of Jewish emigrants fleeing persecution in Portugal. He was trained in Talmudic scholarship, but his views soon took unconventional directions which the Jewish community - fearing renewed persecution on charges of atheism - tried to discourage. Spinoza was offered 1000 florins to keep quiet about his views, but refused. At the age of 24, he was summoned before a rabbinical court, and solemnly excommunicated. Spinoza refused all rewards and honours, and gave away to his sister his share of his father's inheritance - keeping only a bedstead for himself. He earned his living as a humble lens-grinder. He died, in February 1677, of consumption, probably aggravated by fine glass dust inhaled at his workbench. His philosophy is summarized in the Ethics , a very abstract work, which openly expresses none of the love of nature that might be expected from someone who identified God with nature. And Spinoza's starting point is not nature or the cosmos, but a purely theoretical definition of God. The work then proceeds to prove its conclusions by a method modelled on geometry, through rigorous definitions, axioms, propositions and corollaries. No doubt in this way Spinoza hoped to build his philosophy on the solidest rock, but the method, as well as some of the arguments and definitions, are often unconvincing.

A description of pantheism and some of the beliefs and aspirations of Pantheists in the Philippines.
http://www.geocities.com/pilipinopantheist
PILIPINO PANTHEISM
(PANTEISMO NG PILIPINAS) Pantheism is the belief that God is the Universe or Nature.
It takes its name from the Greek god of nature, Pan.
It can take three forms, Natural Pantheism, that Pan is
Nature, a force within the Universe; Spiritual Pantheism,
that there is a Universal Spirit that is present in all persons
and all things, that our personal spirit is merely part of the
Universal Spirit; and Universal Pantheism, that God is the
Universe, not a separate creator person, but the totality of
existence, with all its organization or order, its mystery and
its grandeur. Spiritual Pantheism was present in the Philippines before the Spanish conquest. It was never the major belief that it was over the Pacific Islands, where the Universal Spirit is still revered as Mana in all the Polynesian, Melanesian and Micronesian languages. Mana controls the destiny of everyone and everything. How important you are, how great a leader or faith healer, is a function of how much Mana you possess. In Pilipino traditional religions, there are layers of divinity, with a supreme creator God at top who is fairly inaccessible and not intimately involved in daily life, major gods below It, then Laon, the Universal Spirit which is present in all creatures, then anito, gods or spirits present in the world and intimately involved in daily life. How widespread the belief in Laon was, how important it was, and how Laon was related to, much of this knowledge was lost during the long domination by the Spanish and the Catholic Church.

Critical considerations regarding
pantheist religions and philosophies
We will now proceed to evaluate how the first three criteria mentioned in the previous file are fulfilled by a pantheistic view of life. The classic example of pantheist philosophy was stated by the Upanishads (7th to 5th century BC) and then developed by the Hindu philosopher Shankara to become the well-known Advaita Vedanta philosophy.
1) Internal consistency of Hindu pantheism
As mentioned in a previous file on the Vedantic view on liberation , it is claimed that the unity atman -Brahman is perfectly attained during the last level of meditation, called turiya . The Mandukya Upanishad (12), considered by Shankara to express the quintessence of Vedanta philosophy, ends with the following verse:
The fourth state has cognizance of neither what is inside nor what is outside, nor of both together: it is not a mass of wisdom, it is not wise nor yet unwise. It is unseen; there can be no commerce with it; it is impalpable, has no characteristics, unthinkable; it cannot be designated. Its essence is its firm conviction of the oneness of itself; it causes the phenomenal world to cease; it is tranquil and mild, devoid of duality. Such do they consider this fourth to be. He is the Self; he it is who should be known. (Translated by R.C. Zaehner, in Mysticism - Sacred and Profane, p. 154)
This passage emphasizes the necessity for transcending any duality in order to know Brahman (the Self). However, there is a logical contradiction between these two elements. When transcending any duality, nothing can be known anymore, because the elementary duality between knower (subject) and known (object) is obliterated. Duality is essential for any type of epistemological process. When the subject is

Pantheism
Pantheism is the philosophy that everything is God (pan="everything" theos="God") or that the universe and nature are divine Pantheism is distinguished from panentheism, which holds that God is in everything, but also transcends the Universe. Strict pantheism is not a theism. It does not believe in a transcendent or personal God who is the creator of the universe and the judge of humans. Many pantheists feel the word "God" is too loaded with these connotations and never use the word in their own practice - though they may use it to simplify, or to explain things to theists. Pantheism has often been accused of atheism , and not just because it rejects the idea of a personal creator God. Strict or naturalistic pantheism believes that the Universe either originated itself out of nothing, or has existed forever. Modern scientific pantheism is materialistic. It believes that design in the universe can be fully accounted for by principles of evolution and self-organization . It does not believe in separate spirits or survival of the soul after death. Pantheists concerned about personal immortality seek it in realistic ways - through children, deeds, works, and the memories of the living.

Introduction
The word Pantheism comes from two Greek words "pan" = all + "theos" = god . In Pantheism, "all is god." Many Pantheists define "god" as Nature and its creative forces . God and Nature are one in the same. In contrast, many Monotheists (from "mono" = one+ "theos" = god) define "god" as a supernatural individual. God and Nature are separated. To identify god with Nature, rather than with a hallowed personage, seems odd to those unfamiliar with Pantheism. But actually Monotheism is less common than Pantheism in the history of religion. For tens of thousands of years, humans viewed the Earth as a sacred place with divinity everywhere. Religious scholar Denise Carmody notes "The oldest God is nature...in the beginning, human beings sensed that their habitat was sacred. With twists and turns and numberless permutations, they played out this primal intuition." Modern Pantheism revivifies our species' gene-deep intuition that the Earth is indeed holy. Divinity infuses the world, the skies, the seas, the rocks, the trees, the animals, and ourselves. Pantheism gives perspective to all we do and instills a reverence for Nature which can help reverse the ecological crises of our times.
