Anxiety is a normal experience. Moderate or high levels of anxiety can increase alertness and performance in particular situations. However, people who experience continuous or recurring fears, or episodes of intense fear can feel powerless to manage their symptoms and their lives can become severely restricted. Anxiety Disorders affect at least 12% of Australians at some time in their lives. The increasing demands and stress of everyday life means that anxiety has become a problem in our society. All indications are that stress related mental health issues, such as anxiety disorders and depression, will represent a growing area of need in Mental Health resources within the next few years. The five major anxiety disorders are Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety (sometimes referred to as Social Phobia), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Other types of disorders are Specific Phobia and Separation Anxiety.

Change your beliefs.... Change your life... even in a single session! This is real! Healing at the DNA level. Marlana Lytehaause, MSW, DCH Master of Social Work, Doctor of Clinical Hypnotherapy Our emotions are how we experience every day life. If we worry about tomorrow, life seems scary and tense. If we regret past mistakes, life seems dark and depressing. We are a collection of beliefs, thought patterns and even myths and illusions. What if you could change those scary or depressing feelings just by being willing to let them go. What if you had a magic wand you could wave and feel better with every wave. We now know that our DNA is responsible for much more than the color of our eyes and hair. Our DNA is where we carry our beliefs or "programs". What is even more fascinating is that we collect these "programs" on four levels:
  • Core: This life time.

People experiencing anxiety disorders are frequently misunderstood or dismissed as the worried well, thought to be suffering from nerves or being highly strung. Society has been slow to recognize the suffering and disability that is caused by anxiety disorders. But if you have an anxiety disorder, this normally helpful emotion can do just the opposite—it can keep you from coping and can disrupt your daily life. Anxiety disorders aren't just a case of "nerves." They are illnesses, often related to the biological makeup and life experiences of the individual, and they frequently run in families. There are several types of anxiety disorders, each with its own distinct features. Anxiety disorders profoundly affect people's work, social, and family life. People experiencing anxiety disorders have a higher risk of suicide, drug and alcohol abuse. Anxiety disorders are the most common of all the mental disorders. Through research performed by U.S. government scientists and various other scientific institutions related to mental disorders, mental health, and the brain, scientists are learning more and more about the nature of anxiety disorders, their causes, and how to alleviate them. The Linden Method I am asked repeatedly what it is that makes my method so unique. The best way of describing it is this... Have you ever had one of those EUREKA moments, one of those occasions when everything became crystal clear? So many people have read my method material and said exactly that, that unlike any other resource, not only does the material reassure them and educate them but it also makes them say "that is so obvious, so clear and yet I never thought of it that way and nobody ever described it like that!" So, how does it work? There are many elements to the programme which work in unison to reduce anxiety disorder, the Nine Pillars are the cornerstone to the whole program. This next section explains a little bit about how another powerful element of the program works. Ok, here is the science part. The Amygdala, (am-ig-dulla),  is a small almond shaped organ in the brain which is responsible for the anxiety response. It is the organ that assists the brain in making split-second decisions whether to react with fear to a given situation. The conscious part of our mind is very accessible and so is the subconscious to some extent, using hypnosis or visualisation and these techniques have had some success in the treatment of anxiety disorder. The Amygdala has been researched intensely over recent years as scientists looking at its role in anxiety disorder have concluded that it is a very difficult part of the mind to access, as it only responds to emotional stimuli from other parts of the brain and not to external stimuli like hypnosis etc.

Everybody experiences anxiety periodically. But some people experience more than their share, and suffer anxiety to such an extent that it becomes a disruptive force in their life. If you are such a person, this site can help you get the information and resources you need to learn how to tame this anxiety and enjoy your life. You may already know that these kinds of problems are called "anxiety disorders." Most of the people I work with dislike this name, and I don't care much for it either. But it's so widely used that we're stuck with it, and so I'll use it here. The name's not important. What's important is learning how to manage your anxiety so that it doesn't disrupt your life. For those of you who may have suffered a long time, and are feeling pretty hopeless and pessimistic about it, let me just mention that these problems are:

As Hurricane Rita hurtles toward Texas and Louisiana, we once again send our thoughts and prayers to those directly affected. In some ways, we all are affected, and many of us feel strong emotional reactions to what we are seeing and hearing on the news. And as Rita approaches, it is not the only troubling event we face. The war continues in Iraq. The threat of terrorism lurks. An airplane makes a frightening emergency landing. Prices and interest rise, and there is no end in sight. How do we deal with all of that? These are tough times for everyone with or without anxiety disorders. For all of us, coping means balance. It means understanding what we can and cannot control. It means reaching out to others accepting and giving help. For more coping tips, please see How to Stay Calm in a Changing World If you are directly affected by Hurricane Rita (and/or Hurricane Katrina), you should be aware that your risk of developing post-traumatic stress does increase. Most people, however, will manage and will not develop an actual "disorder." Researchers still aren't sure why some people develop PTSD after a traumatic event and some do not. Either way, after Rita has come and gone, these articles may be helpful in understanding PTSD, particularly as it relates to natural disasters:

Smoking May Lead to Anxiety Disorders in Adolescents and Young Adults
Using a wealth of data obtained through a 25-year longitudinal study, NIDA-funded researcher Dr. Judith Brook of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, Dr. Patricia Cohen of Columbia University in New York, and their colleagues have documented adverse effects of smoking in several critical areas of functioning during young adulthood. Most recently, the team has reported a connection between tobacco use by adolescents and young adults and the likelihood that they will develop agoraphobia (fear of leaving home or of the outdoors), generalized anxiety disorder, or panic disorder. Analyzing data from their Children in the Community study, funded by NIDA and the National Institute of Mental Health, the researchers were able to separate the effects of smoking from the effects of age, gender, childhood temperament, alcohol and other drug abuse, and depression among the adolescents, as well as parents' smoking, education, and behavioral and/or mental health problems. The researchers interviewed 688 youths and their mothers in 1983, between 1985 and 1986, and again between 1991 and 1993. A total of 69 of the youths smoked heavily - at least 20 cigarettes every day - and experienced an anxiety disorder during adolescence, early adulthood, or both. Of these 69 youths, 29 (42 percent) began smoking before they were diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. The remaining 40 youths were split between those who were diagnosed with anxiety disorders before they reported heavy smoking (13, or 19 percent) and those who reported smoking and were diagnosed with anxiety disorders at the same interview session (27, or 39 percent).

For the most comprehensive information on anxiety and panic, welcome to the HealthyPlace.com Anxiety Center "It started 10 years ago, when I had just graduated from college and started a new job. I was sitting in a business seminar in a hotel and this thing came out of the blue. I felt like I was dying." Anxiety Disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S. with 19.1 million (13.3%) of the adult U.S. population (ages 18-54) affected. Anxiety disorders are serious medical illnesses. These disorders fill people's lives with overwhelming anxiety and fear. It's felt that one-quarter of the general population experiences a real anxiety disorder during their lifetime and commonly, anxiety co-exists with other medical conditions, especially depression. Effective treatments for anxiety disorders are available, and research is yielding new, improved therapies that can help most people with anxiety disorders lead productive, fulfilling lives.
