  • What Is It? Although researchers do not completely understand why some people develop panic disorder, they believe that the illness involves a disturbance in brain pathways that regulate emotion, where chemicals called neurotransmitters are active. These chemicals (for example, norepinephrine, serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid) carry signals between brain cells. Researchers believe the following areas of the brain are involved in controlling your anxiety level:

Symptoms include trembling shortness of breath heart palpitations sweating ... paresthesias (tingling sensations), and sensations of choking or smothering. The disorder is strikingly different from other types of anxiety , in that panic attacks are very sudden, appear to be unprovoked, and are often disabling. Most who have one attack will have others. What is panic disorder?
Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder. When panic attacks occur repeatedly, without warning, it is called panic disorder. These attacks can happen many times every day or every week. You might worry about having these attacks throughout the day. It can interfere with your work and personal life.
    How does it occur?
Panic is a "fight or flight" reaction. It is an adrenaline surge that goes wrong. How it happens is not known. Scientists know that certain parts of the brain and nervous system cause the emotional and physical surge of fear. A panic attack is very scary, but having one attack doesn't usually mean that you are developing panic disorder. Panic disorder usually begins when you are a teenager or a young adult. Sometimes it begins after age 30, but almost never in middle age or later. It tends to run in families. Studies of identical twins suggest a genetic link to the disorder. However, one half or more of people with panic disorder do not have a close relative with the same problem.

Information on panic disorder / panic attacks
    What is it?
The common thread between most anxiety disorders is the panic attack. However, when panic attacks are experienced out of the blue without an apparent trigger, this is classified as panic disorder. Sufferers of panic disorder often feel fine one minute, and yet the next may feel totally out of control and in the grips of a panic attack. Panic attacks produce very real physical symptoms from a rapid increase in heartbeat to a churning stomach sensation. These physical symptoms are naturally unpleasant and the accompanying psychological thoughts of terror can make a panic attack a very scary experience. For this reason, sufferers start to dread the next attack, and quickly enter into a cycle of living 'in fear of fear'. Top ^

    Anxiety, Panic Attacks
Anxiety disorders are a group of illnesses that have in common persistent feelings of apprehension, tension, or uneasiness, and are accompanied by physical symptoms such as sweating, palpitations, and feelings of generalized stress. They include phobias, panic attacks, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Here's some hopefully interesting links, if you suffer from, know, or love someone with an anxiety disorder. Anxiety is not fear, being afraid of this or that definite object, but the uncanny feeling of being afraid of nothing at all. It is precisely Nothingness that makes itself present and felt as the object of our dread.
