Welcome to Meowzer's Page. I have created this page in order to provide information for others who suffer from the same disorders that I do. Please be aware that for the most part anything stated about the conditions on this site are from my experience. I would recommend seeking medical advise from a doctor or naturalpath if you have not been diagnosed. The Internet is an excellent place to do research and to hear from other people with the same health concerns, but a proper diagnosis from a professional is important. The site will be under contruction for quite some time and I will be adding to it and modifying it as I have the time and energy.

    Anxiety Disorders
The anxiety disorders are the most common, or frequently occurring, mental disorders. They encompass a group of conditions that share extreme or pathological anxiety as the principal disturbance of mood or emotional tone. Anxiety, which may be understood as the pathological counterpart of normal fear, is manifest by disturbances of mood, as well as of thinking, behavior, and physiological activity.
    Types of Anxiety Disorders
The anxiety disorders include panic disorder (with and without a history of agoraphobia), agoraphobia (with and without a history of panic disorder), generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobia, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, acute stress disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (DSM-IV). In addition, there are adjustment disorders with anxious features, anxiety disorders due to general medical conditions, substance-induced anxiety disorders, and the residual category of anxiety disorder not otherwise specified (DSM-IV). Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder

Panic attacks also are not limited to panic disorder. They commonly occur in the course of social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, and major depressive disorder (DSM-IV).

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, panic disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by unexpected and recurring episodes of intense fear. If you have panic disorder, you have likely experienced repeated intense feelings of terror that struck suddenly and without warning: panic attacks. P anic disorder is a common and treatable disorder. Children and adolescents with panic disorder have unexpected and repeated periods of intense fear or discomfort, along with other symptoms such as a racing heartbeat or feeling short of breath. These periods are called "panic attacks" and last minutes to hours. Panic attacks frequently develop without warning. Symptoms of a panic attack include:
  • Intense fearfulness (a sense that something terrible is happening); Racing or pounding heartbeat; Dizziness or lightheadedness; Shortness of breath or a feeling of smothering; Trembling or shaking; Sense of unreality; Fear of dying, losing control, or going crazy.
More than 3 million Americans will experience panic disorder during their lifetime. Panic disorder often begins during adolescence, although it may start during childhood, and sometimes runs in families. If not recognized and treated, panic disorder and its complications can be devastating. Panic attacks can interfere with a child's or adolescent's relationships, schoolwork, and normal development. Children and adolescents with panic disorder may begin to feel anxious most of the time, even when they are not having panic attacks. Some begin to avoid situations where they fear a panic attack may occur, or situations where help may not be available. For example, a child may be reluctant to go to school or be separated from his or her parents.

Overview
What it is : People with Panic Disorder experience repeated unexpected episodes of intense fear. These episodes, called panic attacks, occur without warning and in the absence of any external threats. Panic attacks can occur as often as several times a week or even per day, causing significant distress. People with panic disorder can develop an intense fear of having another attack and refuse to leave their homes (agoraphobia).( How it's diagnosed : Doctors use a set of guidelines to help determine whether you have panic disorder. They want to know if, one month after a panic attack, you have persistent concern about having another attack, you worry about the consequence or implications of panic attacks or you show significant behavioral change related to the attacks. Doctors want to ensure the attacks do not result from substance abuse or a medical condition. They also want to make sure the attacks are not caused by a different anxiety disorder.( How it's treated : Treatment can involve taking medications, psychotherapy (talk therapy) or both. It is likely you will need ongoing treatment to prevent the symptoms of panic disorder from recurring.

Fear...heart palpitations...terror, a sense of impending doom...dizziness...fear of fear. The words used to describe panic disorder are often frightening. But there is great hope: Treatment can benefit virtually everyone who has this condition. It is extremely important for the person who has panic disorder to learn about the problem and the availability of effective treatments and to seek help. The encouraging progress in the treatment of panic disorder reflects recent, rapid advances in scientific understanding of the brain. In fact, the President and the U.S. Congress have declared the 1990s the Decade of the Brain. In addition to supporting intensified research on brain disorders, the Federal Government is working to bring information about these conditions to the people who need it. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the Federal agency responsible for conducting and supporting research related to mental disorders, mental health, and the brain, is conducting a nationwide education program on panic disorder. The program's purpose is to educate the public and health care professionals about the disorder and encourage people with it to obtain effective treatments. WHAT IS PANIC DISORDER?

    SYMPTOMS
People with panic disorder have feelings of terror that strike suddenly and repeatedly with no warning. They can't predict when an attack will occur, and many develop intense anxiety between episodes, worrying when and where the next one will strike. In between times there is a persistent, lingering worry that another attack could come any minute. When a panic attack strikes, most likely your heart pounds and you may feel sweaty, weak, faint, or dizzy. Your hands may tingle or feel numb, and you might feel flushed or chilled. You may have chest pain or smothering sensations, a sense of unreality, or fear of impending doom or loss of control. You may genuinely believe you're having a heart attack or stroke, losing your mind, or on the verge of death. Attacks can occur any time, even during nondream sleep. While most attacks average a couple of minutes, occasionally they can go on for up to 10 minutes. In rare cases, they may last an hour or more. Panic disorder strikes between 3 and 6 million Americans, and is twice as common in women as in men. It can appear at any agein children or in the elderlybut most often it begins in young adults. Not everyone who experiences panic attacks will develop panic disorder for example, many people have one attack but never have another. For those who do have panic disorder, though, it's important to seek treatment. Untreated, the disorder can become very disabling.

Panic disorder is a real illness that can be treated to help a person have a healthy and full life. It is a type of anxiety disorder . With this disorder, a person can feel frequent and sudden intense fear for no reason. These frequent "bursts" of intense fear are called panic attacks. During these attacks, you can have scary physical feelings like a fast heartbeat, trouble breathing, or dizziness. Panic attacks can happen at any time and without any warning. They can happen anywhere - in grocery stores, malls, crowds, or when traveling. A person can live in constant fear of another attack, staying away from places where past attacks have happened. This fear can take over a person's life, making her or him unable to leave their home (a condition called
