The Spanish first set foot in Panama in 1501. In 1513 they began to colonize the southern portion of the country and on November 10, 1821, Panama separated from Spain as a part of Colombia. On November 3, 1903, Panama declared its independence from Colombia. On October 10, 1968, Panama faced a military coup, and the democratically elected president Arnulfo Arias was overthrown and replaced by military strongman Omar Torrijos Herrera. In 1981, Herrera perished in a plane crash and he was replaced by Ruben Dario Paredes, the nation’s security commander. In 1983, Manuel Antonio Noriega forced Paredes to resign and he himself became the country’s security commander. He in effect controlled the political and military arenas. In May 1989, Guillermo Endara Galimany, a presidential candidate jointly supported by opposition parties, was given a clear mandate in a national election. Noriega, however, declared the election void and in September of that year, the United States implemented economic sanctions against Panama. On December 15, Noriego, in his capacity as Panama’s head of state, declared a state of war against America. On December 20, American troops invaded the country, overthrew the military government and installed Endara Galimany as the country’s president. On January 3, 1990, Noriega surrendered to American forces, marking the end of 21 years of military rule in Panama.

PANAMA: GOVERNMENT SUSPENDS BUS-FARE INCREASE AFTER RIOT.
      January 07, 2001
A government-approved increase in bus fares, coming on the heels of other rate hikes, touched off a massive protest the ended in a violent confrontation with police. In the aftermath, the government suspended the increase but only postponed a resolution of the problem.
On May 3, the government ordered a 66% increase in urban bus fares to US$0.25, causing university students to call for protests. They were later joined by construction workers belonging to the Sindicato Unico de Trabajadores de la Construccion y Similares (SUNTRACS).
A Catholic Church publication said the increase was "a punishment" for bus riders because the present service was already too expensive and deplorable.
The bus owners, represented by the Camara Nacional de Transporte (CANATRA), say the increase was necessary because of increased fuel costs and the need to replace aging equipment. Fares have not risen for 20 years.

    Government and Politics
Cuna Indian mola design of a winged figure IN LATE 1987, PANAMA'S political system was unable to respond to the problems confronting the nation. Protests over the role in the government played by the Panama Defense Forces (Fuerzas de Defensa de PanamáFDP) and their commander, General Manuel Antonio Noriega Moreno, had produced economic disruption and the appearance of political instability and had contributed to serious strains in relations with the United States. With no immediate resolution of the conflict likely, Panama appeared to be in its most severe political crisis since the 1968 coup, which had made the military the dominant political force in the nation. The October 1968 coup marked the third time that the military had ousted Arnulfo Arias Madrid from the presidency of Panama. It differed from previous coups, however, in that it installed a military regime that promoted a mixture of populist and nationalist policies, while at the same time assiduously courting international business. Led, until his death in 1981, by the charismatic General Omar Torrijos Herrera, the military used limited but effective repression to prevent civilian opposition groups from returning to power. Torrijos also created the Democratic Revolutionary Party (Partido Revolucionario DemocráticoPRD), which became the official ruling party. Data as of December 1987
