Panama Table of Contents Panama is located on the narrowest and lowest part of the Isthmus of Panama that links North America and South America. This S-shaped part of the isthmus is situated between 7° and 10° north latitude and 77° and 83° west longitude. Slightly smaller than South Carolina, Panama encompasses approximately 77,082 square kilometers, is 772 kilometers in length, and is between 60 and 177 kilometers in width. Panama's two coastlines are referred to as the Caribbean (or Atlantic) and Pacific, rather than the north and south coasts. To the east is Colombia and to the west Costa Rica. Because of the location and contour of the country, directions expressed in terms of the compass are often surprising. For example, a transit of the Panama Canal from the Pacific to the Caribbean involves travel not to the east but to the northwest, and in Panama City the sunrise is to the east over the Pacific. The country is divided into nine provinces, plus the Comarca de San Blas, which for statistical purposes is treated as part of Colón Province in most official documents. The provincial borders have not changed since they were determined at independence in 1903. The provinces are divided into districts, which in turn are subdivided into sections called

Panama - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Imagine a very long walk to school every day. To get to school, you have to walk three kilometers around a lot of woods. Imagine that there's a place across the woods that's only 10 meters across. Would you make a trail through the woods so you wouldn't have to walk three kilometers? You probably would! There's a place like this short path through the woods. It's actually a country in Central America called Panama.
Panama is at the southern end of Central America. It is at the thinnest part of Central America. It lies between Costa Rica in Central America and Colombia in South America. Its capital city is Panama City. Panama is home to the Panama Canal.
What is a canal? It is a place like the path through the woods, except a canal connects bodies of water. The Panama Canal connects the Caribbean Sea with the Pacific Ocean. How it was built and how it works is quite amazing.

Panama : Geography Panama lies along the narrow land bridge dividing North and South America, traversed by the 50-mile long ship canal built by the US between 1904 and 1914. A mountain range runs through the centre of the country, with coastal plains of varying width on either side. The eastern region of Darien next to Colombia is dominated by dense tropical rain forest. The main agricultural areas are in the west, in Chiriqui province bordering Costa Rica. The climate is tropical with little seasonal variation in temperatures, which typically range from around 21 degrees at night to 32 degrees during the day, with high humidity. There are two main seasons: wet, from May to December, and the early months of the year which are drier, sunnier and fresher. Population Panama 's current population is estimated to be 2.95 million, with a growth rate of 2.0%. It is mostly of mixed descent, but there are sizeable communities of indigenous Carib Indians, Afro-Caribbeans and Asians. The capital, Panama City, at the Pacific end of the canal, has a population approaching 1 million. The other main cities are Colon, at the Caribbean end of the canal, the site of one of the world's largest duty free zones; and David, the capital of the western farming province of Chiriqui.
