    History
Main article: History of Panama Panama was part of Spain 's colonies in America until 1821 when it seceded and joined the Gran Colombia of Simón Bolívar. It can be argued that to a large extent, Panama's history has been a slave to its geography. This was true in its early history as well as in its more recent history. Indeed much of Panama's domestic politics and international diplomacy in the 20th century was tied to the Panama Canal. At the turn of the 20th century, Theodore Roosevelt's vision of an interoceanic seaway encouraged United States diplomatic efforts to facilitate a deal that would allow it to take over French canal operations started by Ferdinand de Lesseps. In November 1903, United States naval maneuverings helped the Panamanian rebels secede from Colombia in an almost bloodless revolution. In Panama City, on November 3, the rebels, headed by Amador Guerrero, declared Panama an independent Republic. Just over two weeks later, representatives of the fledgling republic signed the Hay-Bunau Varilla Treaty by which Panama granted rights to the United States to build and administer the Panama Canal. This treaty had been a contentious diplomatic issue between the United States and Panama until the signing of the Torrijos-Carter Treaty in 1977.

How to Book Panama Map Weather ... CONTACT US! San Blas A cultural experience in paradise! Tinny islands covered with palm trees white sand beaches with crystal clear waters, incredible snorkeling, fresh sea food amazing landscapes, one of the seven remaining native groups that still live in Panama preserving their very own traditions. Is it for everyone? There is a price to pay for those interested in visiting this paradise. First thing, don't expect to find any resorts in San Blas, all lodging options are very basic and rustic. This is actually a good feature if you are visiting for the right reasons.... The cultural experience. The other thing is that you have to get up very early in the morning to catch your flight to San Blas. That's 5AM at the local airport in Panama City (plane leaves at 6AM), and on the way back at 6AM at the airport in San Blas. For many people this is not a problem, for others it is. In our opinion, it is a perfect fit only for the "adventurous traveler" interested in learning more about the rich cultural traditions of the Kunas.

Rach of these groups maintains its own language and culture. The Guaymís number about 125,000 and are Panama's largest tribe; the Kuna, who govern their ancestral territory as the autonomous region of the Comerca de San Blás and send representatives to the legislature, are the most politically organized. of Panama Background:
With US backing, Panama seceded from Colombia in 1903 and promptly signed a treaty with the US allowing for the construction of a canal and US sovereignty over a strip of land on either side of the structure (the Panama Canal Zone). The Panama Canal was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914.
On 7 September 1977, an agreement was signed for the complete transfer of the Canal from the US to Panama by the end of 1999. Certain portions of the Zone and increasing responsibility over the Canal were turned over in the intervening years. With US help, dictator Manuel NORIEGA was deposed in 1989. The entire Panama Canal, the area supporting the Canal, and remaining US military bases were turned over to Panama by or on 31 December 1999.

This region still exhibits traces of an agrarian tradition that is many thousands of years old, composed of highly skilled and knowledgeable farmers. The region is also home to an extraordinary genetic diversity, particularly renewable forest products from perennial species and from plants of known medicinal value. Many Panama villagers still maintain the cultural knowledge associated with this region. Some indigenous doctors in the region still transmit their knowledge orally. Their memories hold together a vast storehouse of recipes, mostly in verse, which they call a Wattoruwa In Panama tribal knowledge is still passed on through activity in institutions like the Kamatha or threshing floor, the pela or watch hut, and in war games such as Pora Po l and Ankeliya; performed annually. Hereditary skills are looked upon as Rajakariya or duty. Each villager specializes in a particular function, and together the whole village in consensus maintains their cultural calendar of ritual duty understood as protection of Nature's balance. Each villager has a unique importance. This cultural memory can still be realized in this region.
