As a meeting point in the history of the countries of Latin America, Panama is a country forged by various cultures and traditions that come together to create a unique complexity and exotic environment. The country's ethnic diversity is reflected in the traditional products, such as woodcarvings, ceremonial masks and pottery, as well as in its architecture, cuisine and festivals.
To visit Panama is to dazzle the senses, where indigenous and European cultures combine to create a country without equal. Panama's architecture is a reflection of the different groups that make their home there. The Kuna Yala region, home to the Kuna Indians with their traditional huts, stands in contrast to the homes built by Swiss, Yugoslavian, Swedish, German and American immigrants in the styles unique to their respective countries.

A cultural glimpse: Panama
General Information:
Panama is a small country located in Central America. The word "Panama" has various origins. According to history and the native Indian language it means "abundance of butterflies". Other popular interpretations are "abundance of fish" and the very popular "Panama Hat." Because of its geographical position, Panama has been inhabited by people of many different cultures. It has been a crossroad since way before the Spanish conquest, to the Gold Rush and finally the construction of one of the most important waterways in the World: The Panama Canal. Panama offers some of the finest snorkeling, birding and deep-sea fishing in the world. The reality is a proud prosperous nation which honors its seven Indian tribes and its rich Spanish legacy, and which embraces visitors so enthusiastically that it's difficult to leave without feeling that you're in on a secret that the rest of the traveling world will one day uncover.
History
Explored by Columbus in 1502 on his fourth voyage and explored by Balboa in 1513, Panama was the principal shipment point for supplies to and from South and Central America in colonial days. In 1821, when Central America revolted against Spain, Panama joined Colombia, which had already declared its independence. For the next 82 years, Panama attempted unsuccessfully to break away from Colombia. Between 1850 and 1900 Panama had 40 administrations, 50 riots, 5 attempted secessions, and 13 U.S. interventions. After U.S. proposals for canal rights over the narrow isthmus had been rejected by Colombia, Panama proclaimed its independence from Colombia with U.S. backing in 1903.

of Panama and the engineering marvel the Canal is. We'd like to hear from you what kind of activities you'd
