Each province of Panama has a varied Folklore reflected through its dances, music and cuisine. In the deeply catholic provinces of Cocle, Herrera and Los Santos churches are found on the main town square (Plaza) as was the Spanish tradition. Nata, one of the oldest colonial cities, boasts the oldest church of the American Continent. Panama Culture - Business: How things are done
Panama Business: Greetings and Courtesies
Panama Business: Ethic and Framework
Panamanians are generally considered relaxed, easygoing, and informal by Latin American standards, although they nevertheless have a regard for formal dignity and hierarchical and class distinctions. Although they have become more accustomed to North American business norms, their values continue to emphasize the importance of personal relationships, and they still take time and effort to establish a personal relationship before a business relationship. Because of its important location in international trade, Panamanian-born citizens represent almost all of the world's cultures and religions. Often referred to as a "melting pot" of races, like the Panamanian national dish sancocho , all of the different ingredients retain their own distinct identity while adding flavor to the whole dish. There is no racial hatred; perhaps the clue lies in the mixing of the population. You will find every nuance of skin colors and races, including blacks descended from freed or escaped slaves (Cimarrones ); South Americans, Japanese, and Chinese; merchants and immigrants from Europe, Hindus, etc.

Country Info Panama Introduction Panama General Data Panama Maps Panama Culture ... Panama Time and Date Panama Culture Back to Top Panamanian society of the 1980s reflected the nation's unusual geographical position as a transit zone. Panama's role as a crossing point had long subjected the isthmus to a mixture of outside determines not typically associated with Latin America. The population included East Asian, South Asian, European, North American, and Middle Eastern immigrants and their offspring, who came to Panama to take advantage of the commercial opportunities connected with the Panama Canal. black Antilleans, descendants of Caribbean laborers who worked on the construction of the canal, formed the largest single minority group; as English-speaking Protestants, they were set apart from the majority by both language and religion. Tribal Indians, often isolated from the larger society, constituted roughly 5 % of the population in the 1980s. They were distinguished by language, their indigenous belief systems, and a mixture of other cultural practices. Migration, both to cities and to less settled regions in the nation, was a critical component in contemporary social relations. City and nationside were linked because the urban-based elite owned ranches or plantations, farmers and ranchers provisioned cities, and migration was an experience common to tens of thousands of Panamanians. Land and an expanding urban economy were essential to absorb surplus labor from heavily populated regions of the nationside. It remained to be seen how the social system would function in the face of high urban unemployment in the more straitened economic circumstances of the late 1980s.

CULTURE Panama's arts reflect its ethnic mix. Indian tribes, West Indian groups, mestizos, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Swiss, Yugoslav and North American immigrants have all contributed ingredients to the cultural stew. Traditional arts include wood carving, weaving, ceramics and maskmaking. Spanish is the official language, though US influence and the international nature of the canal zone reinforce the use of English as a second language. West Indian immigrants also speak Caribbean-accented English. Indian tribes have retained their own languages. Panama is predominantly Roman Catholic, but there are sizable Muslim and Protestant minorities and small numbers of Hindus and Jews.
