Paleontology (palaeontology is the British spelling) is the study of the developing history of life on earth, of ancient plant s and animal s based on the fossil record , evidence of their existence preserved in rock s. This includes the study of body fossil s, tracks, burrows, cast off parts, fossilized feces coprolite s"), and chemical residues.
1 Overview
Modern paleontology sets ancient life in its contexts, by studying how long-term physical changes of global geography (" paleogeography ") and climate (" paleoclimate ") have affected the evolution of life, how ecosystems have responded to these changes and have changed the planetary environment in turn, and how these mutual responses have affected today's patterns of biodiversity . So paleontology overlaps with geology , the study of rocks and rock formations, and with botany biology zoology This article is the top of the Zoology series. STRATIGRAPHIC PALYNOLOGY
- the use of palynomorphs, their identification, distribution, and abundance to correlate among sedimentary sequences of any age, or to provide chronological control for these sedimentary sequences. Exclusive of environmental palynology , but the study of sedimentary sequences often includes both stratigraphic and environmental palynology. Typically, stratigraphic palynology is applied to pre-Quaternary sediments and is, therefore, a part of Paleopalynology. However, stratigraphic principals apply to sediments of all ages, so stratigraphic palynology is also a part of Quaternary Palynology. Stratigraphic Palynology is a branch of biostratigraphy - applying geological and evolutionary principals to the understanding of sedimentary sequences and the geological record.
  • Careers in Paleontology Stratigraphic Palynology played a prominent role in petroleum exploration during the mid-twentieth century. From 1965 - 1980 the major North-American petroleum companies hosted large palynology laboratories. The ubiquity of palynomorphs permitted the detailed analysis of subsurface stratigraphy necessary for locating petroleum reservoirs. In 1967, petroleum palynologists, and other paleoplaynologists, founded the American Association of Stratigraphic Palynologists to promote training of, and communication among stratigraphic palynologists worldwide.

BS : San Diego State University Courses : Physical Geology Lecture and Laboratory, Historical Geology, Prehistoric Life, Invertebrate Paleontology, Micropaleontology Research Interests My main research interest is Paleozoic palynology, specifically the study of acritarchs, chitinozoans, and spores and their application to solving biostratigraphic and paleoecological problems. Palynology, a discipline of paleontology, is the study of microscopic organic-walled microfossils. ACRITARCHS Acritarchs are marine, microscopic algae of unknown affinity that were abundant during the Proterozoic through Paleozoic eras (670 - 245 million years ago). They are important because they were the primary producers in the oceans during that time, and as such, were the main food source of the invertebrate consumers. Fluctuations in their abundance and diversity thus affected the composition and evolution of the marine ecosystem during that time. Acritarchs are also excellent guide fossils, that is, because of their world-wide distribution and short geologic ranges, they can be used to age-date and correlate rock formations, which is important in working out the geologic history of an area. Lastly, acritarchs are important because they are the organisms from which Paleozoic oils are derived.

BIOSTRATIGRAPHY, PALYNOLOGY AND PETROLEUM EXPLORATION THE SCENARIO Your company has acquired licenses for several prospective sections of land with the exploration rights from Mannville to surface (Cretaceous or younger age). The stratigraphy indicates a complex erosional unconformity occurring between Lower Mannville and the Rock Creek . You have spent one month of geological mapping, run a local seismic survey, and isolated a bright prospect. The equivalent sands from the surrounding wells have an ambiguous log character suggesting either a Basal Quartz or possibly interstratified Upper Fernie or Neocomian sands. The log characteristics change dramatically laterally. You have to make a decision -whether or not you own it -where does the land holding stand legally? You can choose to drill with the hope that your assumptions are correct - but you might discover that you are guilty of trespass and lose all of your investment. If you drill without the deep rights secured (or shallow rights as the reverse case may be), you risk losing the prospect, and releasing to the public all the geological and production data on the lease. You would be required to rebid for the prospect from the same level as all other companies. Possibly someone owns the rights already. The total loss when it is finished will be great. Ownership is much like scratching a lottery ticket while holding it up to a bright light with empty hopes to see through the opaque wax. There is yet another option which presently, only a few, most enlightened companies exploit to their advantage

The Palynology Collection consists of 700 reference preparations in silicone oil of pollen from seed plants and spores from other vascular and nonvascular plants native to North America. The focus of the collection is the pollen of the southeastern United States. The comparative collection is used in the interpretation and reconstruction of paleo-environments and the fine scale analysis of anthropological and archaeological sites.
