Geological Survey of Canada Calgary GSC Calgary Paleontology Paleontology is the study of life of past geological times based on the examination of fossil remains of plants and animals. Biostratigraphy is the part of paleontology that relates to the conditions and order of deposition of sedimentary rocks. Information derived from the study of the evolution of important fossil groups is used to develop and modify the standard geological time scale for intercontinental correlation. This scale is the geological clock that records when geological events occurred. The study of fossils also leads to an understanding of ancient depositional environments. Examinations of the physical and chemical changes that fossils undergo over time can provide insight into the changing physical and chemical characteristics of sedimentary environments over time. Paleontology research at GSC Calgary focuses mainly on microfossils (primarily conodonts and foraminifera) and palynomorphs (pollens and spores). We are responsible for the

Raphael 'Ray' Guillory
By Gordon D. Wood, Don G. Benson, Jr., and Merrell A, Miller
Sunday, August 31, 2003 Raphael "Ray" Guillory, a champion of applied palynology and paleontology at Amoco Production Company, died August 16th in Houston, Texas. Ray was born in Mamou, Louisiana on October 12, 1931. Those who knew him will remember his ever pleasant demeanor, palynological prowess, reputation as a raconteur of Cajun or 'Coonass' jokes (he used these as endearing terms), long time member of AASP, and as a practicing 'Diptherian." Ray graduated from Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge) with a degree in Geology. At LSU he developed a major interest in paleontology. Ray pursued graduate work at Tulane University, until he accepted a position with Stanolind Oil Company (subsequently Pan American and eventually the Amoco Production Company). He served in the U.S. Army during the Berlin Airlift. Ray was stationed in Wiesbaden, where he met his future wife Jean Campbell. Jean and Ray were married for 48 years and have two children, Ronald Ray and Becky. Ray was employed by Amoco for 31 years, first as a micropaleontologist in Amoco's New Orleans office. When industrial palynology was in its infancy he leaped at a chance for retraining as a palynologist at Amoco's Tulsa Research Center. He spent the remainder of his technical career working primarily on the Mesozoic Gulf Coast palynology. Ray was instrumental in developing the zonation for the Lower Cretaceous and Jurassic that was used at Amoco. He was infamous for recognizing an important palynological marker informally known in the Amoco system as

Pollen must be strong to protect the male gametes on their journey. The outer wall of the pollen grain, called the exine , is composed of a very unusual substance called sporopollenin which is very tough. The inner layer is made of cellulose and is similar in construction to an ordinary plant cell wall. Pollen grains are microscopic - usually about 15 to 100 microns - and just a pinch of pollen powder contains thousands and thousands of grains. General Structure of Pollen:

Paleontology in Academia: Recent Trends and Future Opportunities Karl W. Flessa (Dept. of Geosciences, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721 USA). Dena M. Smith (Dept. of Geosciences, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721 USA). ABSTRACT
We compared 1980 and 1995 levels and patterns of employment of paleontologists, geophysicists, and geochemists in 564 U.S. academic institutions. Employment of paleontologists was stable, while the number of academic positions for geophysicists and geochemists increased. Colleges and universities that employ paleontologists tend to employ only one, while geophysicists and geochemists are more likely to have colleagues in their own discipline. The proportion of senior faculty members in all three disciplines has increased. Recruitment of assistant professors declined in paleontology, while it remained stable or increased in geophysics and geochemistry.
Less information is available on the status of academic paleontology outside the U.S. Numbers of paleontology faculty in paleontology in Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand appear to be either stable or declining slightly, while economic and political pressures threaten academic positions in countries with developing economies.

In the 21st Century, the global demand for energy resources will continue to increase driven by economic growth in developing countries and the growing population (Figure 9). Figure 9 Fossil fuels will provide most of that energy for at least the next 60 to 80 years (Figure 10). Biostratigraphy has been and will continue to be an integral tool in the search for and production of oil and gas. Thus, there are economic incentives to sustain current industrial paleontology staff and reinvigorate university training programs in stratigraphically oriented paleontology. Figure 10 Sustaining current staff depends on demonstrating the technical value of biostratigraphy to the business of finding and producing oil and gas. Once the value is documented and effectively communicated, renewal of staff will provide jobs for at least two new generations of industrial paleontologists. The industrial hiring of paleontologists will provide incentive for

We can recognize four influences. Geological environment determines mineralogical and sedimentological nature of the detritic sediments. Tectonic evolution modifies the energetic inputs into the karstic network and determines the nature of the sedimentation (high or low energetic levels). Climatic factors, of course, have a determining role through the biorhexistasy. Finally, human actions modify very much the "natural" mechanisms. Thus, the sedimentary recordings in caves reflect, because of their stratigraphic complexity, many parameters in which climate is only one. Fig.1:

The Fossil Record of Life

Note: Authorities differ as to precise time boundaries between geologic periods. Eon Era Period Epoch While this page is about paleontology and fossils, it is also inseparably connected to geology and plate tectonics. It is impossible to understand the stratigraphic and geographic distribution of ancient life on this planet without having at least a basic knowledge of these subjects. In addition, an understanding of radiometric dating is also beneficial, although you will not have to learn much about chemistry and physics to achieve that understanding.
This page is divided into two rather long sections. The first section lists all the geologic periods from most recent to most ancient. Wherever possible a series of maps is presented showing the size and position of land areas during each period. Also a small list of links is given for a description of the period and for museum and fossil exhibits related to it. The second section of this page contains a dozen or more broad topics within paleontology with a variety of links to help you explore each subject area. Those links will in turn offer you additional sources of data. A great deal about the fossil record of life is available online to help you learn. But I urge you to read a couple of books and a journal or two and, if possible, to take an introductory course in paleontology. Most colleges and universities offer them, and you can find online course material on this page. This is an exciting time in paleontology. New fossils are being reported almost daily and old, troublesome gaps in the fossil record are rapidly being filled. If you are really interested in being up-to-date subscribe to a paleontological news service.
