From the "Movies" Archives: The Girl Can't Help It: "Palindromes" by Nick Pinkerton with responses by Matthew Plouffe and Michael Joshua Rowin
Shayna Levine and Stephen Adly Guirgis in a scene from Todd Solondz's "Palindromes." Photo credit: Macall Polay courtesy of Wellspring. [ indieWIRE's weekly reviews are written by critics from Reverse Shot The indie special-defects film of labored shocks that enjoyed a fart of relevance in the Nineties is certifiably in hangover mode. Burn-out Harmony Korine recently emerged in the hip rag Tokion, very much looking the part of a flabby has-been sucking on the resin of his quasi-fame. And Todd Solondz , who launched a thousand ill-conceived reviews by vogue-riding hacks, now desperately masks his dearth of ideas behind convoluted formal experiments. Hence the ungainly structure of "Storytelling, " a cringing defensive shriek toward a much-deserved but nonexistent critical backlash, and now the baffling stunt that's maladroitly inserted into "Palindromes."

http://www.iol.ie/~peter/num1.html
Palindromes In a mathematical context a palindrome is a number that reads the same in either a forward or backward direction. In other words a palindrome (or palindromic number) is equal to its reverse. Thus for example 1331 is a palindrome. Such numbers have considerable psycho-mathematical significance
Fascinating Palindromes
There are many fascinating palindromes involving consecutive digit sequences.
For example in base 10 we can construct palindromes with consecutive digits starting
with 1. For example 121 is such a palindrome. It is divisible by 11 with the result = 11 which of course is also a palindrome. (Note that in this example the highest digit 2 is even.) With the requirement that the highest digit is even the next such palindrome is 1234321. Again it is divisible by 11 with the result = 112211. Continuing on in this fashion the next such palindrome is 12345654321. Again it is divisible by 11 with the result = 1122332211. This pattern will repeat itself with the final single even digit in base 10 as highest digit. Thus 123456787654321 divided by 11 = 11223344332211.

What is it?
It's a practical, well-crafted week-at-a-glance type calendar datebook with a humorous theme; palindromes. Over 2/3rd of the days of the year are marked with a palindrome illustrating an event that occurred or will be occurring on that day. Each week also has an in-depth item on subjects such as Sotades the Obscene, who invented the form in 300 BC.
Basic statistics
The date book has 247 palindromes. Only 50 are "classics" that readers might have seen, such as "A man, a plan, a canal: Panama" and "Satan, oscillate my metallic sonatas." The rest are unpublished, very rare, or originals from the pages of The Palindromist magazine. 101 are written by the editor, Mark Saltveit. Each week also has an in-depth item on subjects such as Sotades, the inventor of palindromes, magic word squares, etc.

Sotades The Obscene of Maronea
Inventor of the palindrome.
(from The Palindromist , a journal for people who WRITE and read palindromes, Fall 1996, p5) Most sources credit Sotades with inventing palindromes in Greek-ruled Egypt, back in the 3rd century BC. In fact, palindromes were once known as "Sotadic verses." If you've seen his name mentioned, you probably know he was thrown into the sea (wrapped in lead) by King Ptolemy II, for insulting the king in one of his verses. And that's it. This article gives you the rest of the story. It is a detailed, heavily researched life story of his family, notorious poetry and death. It includes (for the first time) English translations of everything he wrote (that survives). The article discusses the foulness and scurrility of Sotades' poems, attacks on him by ancient Greek and Roman authors, and the full story of why Ptolemy II had him killed. Back to the Palindromist.

A palindrome is a word, phrase, number or any other sequence of units (like a strand of DNA ) which has the property of reading the same in either direction (the adjustment of spaces between letters is generally permitted). The word "palindrome" comes from the Greek words palin ("back") and dromos ("racecourse"). Writing literature in palindromes is an example of constrained writing According to Bill Bryson 's (p. 227): "Palindromes … are at least 2,000 years old. The ancient Greeks often put "ΝΙΨΟΝΑΝΟΜΗΜΑΤΑΜΗΜΟΝΑΝΟΨΙΝ" (or, in mixed case with [modern] accents and divided into words, Νίψον ανομήματα μη μόναν όψιν: "Nipson anomēmata mē monan opsin") on fountains ( ps , ψ, is one letter in Greek, called psi ), meaning "Wash the sin as well as the face." The Romans admired them, too, as demonstrated by "In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni" ("We enter the circle at night and are consumed by fire"), which was said to describe the behavior of moths. The Latin palindrome " Sator Arepo Tenet Opera Rotas " (translation is problematic, as the sentence is grammatically flawed; for further discussion, see separate article) is remarkable for the fact that it reproduces itself also if one forms a word from the first letters, then the second letters and so forth. Hence it can also be arranged into a square which can be read either horizontally or vertically:

What kind of girl are you?
(5/14/2005 03:26:00 AM)
You're like me! The loner. You're shy at times but friendly, and you are never weak and always independent. You are kinda intelligent and somehow have a talent for many things. You have a kind and warm personality and enjoy the simple things. Like hanging out with friends and watching movies at home. But you're sometimes quiet nature makes you a bit of an outcast and a mystery to people (in other words, a weirdo). No matter how pretty you are or smart or athletic, you just can't seem to break into the crowd and be noticed. Don't worry, try to be more outgoing and speak out when you have more to say. Don't hide behind your books and sports and computer, get out there and get noticed. You also have deep desires in life and feel vunerable and alone at times. Don't feel sad either, What helps me to express feelings and dreams that I can't say to people, is through my writting. I write poetry, maybe you should try.

    SFIFF. Palindromes
Craig Phillips catches the feel-bad movie of the season at the San Francisco International Film Festival The palindromically named Aviva is the center of this latest glimpse into the Todd Solondz universe, an innocent, soft-voiced 13-year-old whose main goal in life is to have a child. What sounds on the surface like an After School Special-ish plot - teenage pregnancy, runaways, etc - is turned inside out by Solondz's unique ability to hone in on all that makes up our failings as a collective people and as individuals. The catch, though not the gimmick it could have been, is that Aviva, a cousin of Welcome to the Dollhouse 's Dawn Wiener character, is played by a series of actresses of various shapes and ages, with Valerie Shusterov playing her the majority of the time, while two African American actresses play her prominently as well, as does, most conspicuously, though still mesmerizing, Jennifer Jason Leigh . (I half-expected Philip Seymour Hoffman to attempt it at some point, but fortunately, Solondz restrained himself.) Aviva, then, is a bit of cipher, although she certainly has emotional range; but what the device does is serve as an entryway into the journey that we take with her. Think of it as a Fractured Fairy Tale for the arthouse set. It's a looking-glass way of opening to interpretation irreconcilable differences in American values, most overt in the abortion plot (which Solondz's describes in his press notes as essentially a "MacGuffin"), while, front and center, there is still only one component for how Solondz depicts the human landscape in general. It may be suburban New Jersey, but it's the suburban New Jersey that exists within the director's mind, and it's not a pretty landscape. Although the film primarily takes place in the drab, almost suffocating interior locations that represent much of Solondz's milieu, he's opened it up a bit more to keep it from being too claustrophobic, and we see hills, creeks, woods, roadsides. With the dreamy, creepy score and the iconography of childhood strewn about the landscape, it's easy to feel that this is both a nightmare and a dream. And yet the plotlines could just as easily be ripped from today's headlines.
