1998 marks the 50th anniversary of the Nakba (cataclysm). In human terms, that year saw the mass deportation of a million Palestinians from their cities and villages, massacres of civilians, and the razing to the ground of hundreds of Palestinian villages. In commemoration of these capital events in Palestine history, the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center brings you this visual tribute. Palestine - Home of history

3'RD MILLENNIUM BC 3'rd millennium BC : The Canaanites were the earliest known inhabitants of Palestine. They became urbanized and lived in city-states, one of which was Jericho . They developed an alphabet. Palestine's location at the center of routes linking three continents made it the meeting place for religious and cultural influences from Egypt, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Asia Minor. It was also the natural battleground for the great powers of the region and subject to domination by adjacent empires, beginning with Egypt in the 3d millennium BC.
2'ND MILLENNIUM BC 2'rd millennium BC : Egyptian hegemony and Canaanite autonomy were constantly challenged by such ethnically diverse invaders as the Amorites, Hittites, and Hurrians. These invaders, however, were defeated by the Egyptians and absorbed by the Canaanites, who at that time may have numbered about 200000.
14th century BC : Egyptian power began to weaken, new invaders appeared: the Hebrews, a group of Semitic tribes from Mesopotamia, and the Philistines (after whom the country was later named), an Aegean people of Indo-European stock.
1230 BC : Joshua conquered parts of Palestine. The conquerors settled in the hill country, but they were unable to conquer all of Palestine.

What was the history of Palestine between Biblical times and the modern era?
Destruction of the Jewish Temple
70AD (by Roberts) In 539 B.C. the Persians conquered the Babylonians. The Jewish Temple, destroyed by the Babylonians, was rebuilt (516 BC). Under Persian rule the Jewish state enjoyed considerable autonomy. Alexander the Great of Macedon, conquered the area in 333 BC His successors, the Ptolemies and Seleucids, contested for control. The attempt of the Seleucid Antiochus IV (Antiochus Epiphanes) to impose Hellenism brought a Jewish revolt under the Maccabees, who set up a new Jewish state in 142 BC The state lasted until 63 BC, when Pompey conquered the region for Rome. At the time of Christ the Jewish state was ruled by puppet kings of the Romans, the Herods. When the Jews revolted in 66 AD, the Romans destroyed the Temple in Jerusalem (70 AD). The Bar Kokba revolt between 132 and 135 AD was also suppressed, Jericho and Bethlehem were destroyed, and the Jews were barred from Jerusalem. The Roman Emperor Hadrian determined to wipe out the identity of Israel-Judah-Judea. Therefore, he took the name

The Arab countries occupy 640 times the land mass as does Israel and outnumber the Jews of Israel by nearly fifty to one. So much for Arab propaganda! N ow notice the TOTAL area of Israel and Jordan . This was referred to as "Pal estine" and mandated under British administration following World War I (see next map below). How convenient that today's Arab propagandists forget that land east of the Jordan River was also part of "Palestine" and is, in fact, the Arab-Palestinian State!

PALESTINE, TEXAS (Anderson County). Palestine, the county seat of Anderson County, is at the intersection of U.S. highways 79 and 287, at the center of the county, some 108 miles southeast of Dallas and 150 miles north of Houston. It was the early home of Daniel Parker qv and was named after the Parkers' former home of Palestine, Illinois. It was also the home of John H. Reagan and Governor Thomas M. Campbell. qv When the Texas legislature established Anderson County in 1846, no community existed at the stipulated center of the county, so Palestine was established. A post office opened at the site the next year, and a contract was drawn up for the construction of the first courthouse, which was built on the crest of a low hill. According to a census taken in 1848 by Susan Scott Mallard, wife of Judge John B. Mallard, qv qv In 1914 the county's fifth courthouse (still standing in 1990) was completed. Palestine then had a population estimated at 11,000, three daily and five weekly newspapers, saw and grist mills, railroad shops, cotton gins, a cotton compress, a foundry and machine shop, a brick factory, a saltworks, and a creamery. The discovery of oil in 1928 at Boggy Creek, east of Palestine, diversified the town's economy and carried Palestine through the Great Depression.

Prehistory Jews Torah, The Greeks under Alexander the Great conquered the Persians and controlled Palestine and Judah in 331 BC. Alexander's successors, the Ptolemies of Egypt and the Seleucids of Syria, continued to rule the country and tried to impose Hellenistic culture and religion (multiple gods) on the Judeans. However, the Jews regained control with the Maccabaean Revolt (141 BC) and set up an independent state again. Then, in 63 BC the Romans conquered the region. After the 132 AD rebellion, Jerusalem was flattened, and the Romans built a new city. The Jews left Palestine, becoming known as the Diaspora ("scattered"), but they have remained bonded with their religion based on the Torah and the laws of the Talmud , written in the first century AD. They believe that God will return to resurrect the faithful on Judgment Day, appearing first at Jerusalem. Christians Then in 313, the Romans made an about-face when Roman emperor Constantine I legalized Christianity and became a Christian himself. In 324 AD the Roman empire was split in half and Constantine moved to Byzantium (now Istanbul) to rule the eastern half. He renamed Byzantium to Constantinople in the process. The Byzantine Empire that Constantine founded soon grew to outstrip the empire of fading Rome. Muslims The Muslim’s were a relatively new group of Arabs bonded by a common belief in the teachings of Mohammed (Islam, or "Surrender to God’s Will"). Mohammed was born in Mecca in 570 AD and began to receive messages from God (Allah) through the angel Gabriel. By 630 AD Mohammed had built a massive following and had conquered Mecca and all of Arabia, expanding westward to Palestine by 638 AD. Mohammed’s teachings and prophecies were gathered into a book called the

Note: The organisers of this site completely reject the equation of anti-Zionism with anti-semitism. All texts included in this archive are written by resolute opponents of all forms of fascism and racism, including anti-semitism (the only exception consists of a small number of documents of the Zionist movement). We also reject all forms of Holocaust Revisionism, which is really an attempt, sometimes poorly disguised, to make anti-semitism palatable by masking it as anti-Zionism. We have endeavoured to ensure that all links are free from anti-semitism, which is gladly confused with anti-Zionism by Zionists and anti-semites alike. If any of our links should lead to articles with anti-semitic sentiments please contact us and we will remove the link if the accusation is justified.
