Cultural Zionism
Israel Table of Contents The counterpoint to Herzl's political Zionism was provided by Asher Ginsberg, better known by his pen name Ahad HaAm (One of the People). Ahad HaAm, who was the son of a Hasidic rabbi, was typical of the Russian maskalim . In 1886, at the age of thirty, he moved to Odessa with the vague hope of modernizing Judaism. His views on Zionism were rooted in the changing nature of Jewish communal life in Eastern Europe. Ahad HaAm realized that a new meaning to Jewish life would have to be found for the younger generation of East European Jews who were revolting against traditional Jewish practice. Whereas Jews in the West could participate in and benefit from a secular culture, Jews in the East were oppressed. While Herzl focused on the plight of Jews alone, Ahad HaAm was also interested in the plight of Judaism, which could no longer be contained within the limits of traditional religion. Ahad HaAm's solution was cultural Zionism: the establishment in Palestine of small settlements aimed at reviving the Jewish spirit and culture in the modern world. In the cultural Zionist vision, a small number of Jewish cadres well versed in Jewish culture and speaking Hebrew would settle in Palestine. Ahad HaAm believed that by settling in that ancient land, religious Jews would replace their metaphysical attachment to the Holy Land with a new Hebrew cultural renaissance. Palestine and the Hebrew language were important not because of their religious significance but because they had been an integral part of the Jewish people's history and cultural heritage.

The Popular Art Centre (PAC) is a Palestinian NGO, founded in 1987 during the first Intifada by EL-Funoun, the Palestinian Popular Dance Troupe. The aim was to provide a forum for local dance groups, musicians and artists. The PAC quickly became the leading cultural centre in the West Bank, organizing annual music and dance festivals (including the Palestine International Festival For Music and Dance), conducting a range of arts programs for children, establishing a cinemateque and promoting traditional music and dance. Throughout the years, the PAC has attracted hundreds of individuals to participate in its activities and has promoted the development of other Palestinian cultural activities, centres and festivals. The PAC is a member of the Network of the Palestinian Non-Governmental Organizations (PNGO), a member of the International Council for Folkloric Festivals (CIOFF), and an active member of the Art Centres’ Network.

Nowhere across their land are Palestinians spared the effects of Israeli aggression. From north to south, cities, towns, villages, camps all wish to make their plight known, and all must vie for coverage by the world's media, whose priorities are often politically motivated. The media spotlight has not yet been trained on Nablus, a city under curfew and buffeted by relentless army assault. It is long past time that we hear the voice of besieged Nablus. For more than a year now, since April 2002, the cries of Nablus have been muted by the roar of jet bombers flying overhead and the blasts from tanks encircling and effectively laying siege to the city. At all times of the day and night, and often without warning, Israeli soldiers shell and shoot at the civilians of Nablus, who never know when or where to take cover. Children, women and men have been hunted, injured and killed.

The issue is not the omnipresent Israeli-Palestinian strife, nor the increasingly contentious elections, in which each party seeks to assert its presence. The issue is the summer carnivals. The Palestinian Authority, along with some liberal and secular circles, sees them as a recreational activity for a people in need of respite from the Israeli occupation. The increasingly powerful Islamists, on the other hand, view these activities as an expression of moral permissiveness, fraught with sexual suggestions, an assault on Islamic morality and conservative traditions.

CULTURAL DE-ESCALATION PLAN FOR ISRAEL AND PALESTINE ©Marc Gopin PREAMBLE There will be no success to a strategic political plan at this point in time, no matter how rational it may be, unless there is a parallel effort to de-escalate the rage and fear that is propelling rejectionism and hardened positions in this conflict. One can speculate endlessly and argue about which side deserves greater blame for the current sequence of tragic events. A constructive approach, however, is to initiate strategically a bilateral set of actions affecting the general population that would allow the leadership on each side to achieve the necessary political space and communal consensus to move back to negotiations and toward a final settlement. 1. HOLY PLACES Gestures of regret, honor and re-dedication should be made in every religious space that has been violated in Israel and Palestine in the last month. This includes the Dome of the Rock, Joseph’s Tomb, in addition to various synagogues, mosques, and gravesites. These gestures should be bilateral, organized by a variety of existing interfaith organizations, but endorsed publicly by leading political figures on both sides, in addition to religious leaders on both sides. Third parties, such as the United States, need to make clear to both sides that this is a priority. 2. LOSS OF HUMAN LIFE

Comments? Email editor@cafearabica.com Cultural Couture: Palestinian Heritage Foundation Nurtures the Fabric of Arab Life and Tradition in the U.S. Before leaving for a trip to Jerusalem in 1987, Farah Munayyer's wife Hanan asked him to bring back a book on traditional Palestinian costumes and embroidery. From early childhood, girls in the Middle East are taught the art of embroidery, using motifs transferred from mother to daughter down through the generations. As a child in Haifa, Hanan had embroidery passed down to her and her interest in it was still strong. A few years earlier, Farah had brought back an antique dress from Jerusalem. But when she decided to use the fabric for pillow cases, Farah said "No." In its entirety, the dress was a piece of history, of specific identity. Hanan's book request came as an offshoot of the "saved dress."
