Project: The material culture of Transjordan and Palestine in the Hellenistic-Roman periods and in Late Antiquity
Print View Titel De materi«le cultuur van Trans-Jordani« en Palestina in de Hellenistisch-Romeinse perioden en late Oudheid Abstract The research project focuses on the archaeology of the region of Umm Qeis (ancient Gadara of the Decapolis) in the NW of Jordan and its relations to the areas to the west. Continuing a longstanding archaeological project in the ancient city of Gadara itself, research now is extended from this urban centre to the surrounding area, especially in the southern sector, where several sites show the remains of the Bronze and Iron Ages and the classical to the early mediaeval periods. Through this area ran some of the major roads connecting the cultural centres and trade routes of Southern Syria and the Transjordanian plateau with the urban areas of Palestine and the Mediterranean coast. Palestine tops the bill
Palestine was the guest of honour at this year's Salon euro-arabe du Livre in Paris, writes David Tresilian Well-attended as ever, though this year sweltering under a freak heat wave, the 8th Euro-Arab Book Fair which closed today, opened to the public at the Institut du monde arabe in Paris on 24 June, hosting some 260 publishers from 26 countries, including 146 Arab publishers and 114 European publishers producing books on the Arab world. Founded in 1990 and held biannually since, the Fair's purpose is to encourage professional contacts between Arab and European publishers, among them publishers from Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom and France, and to act as a showcase for the current state of European publishing on the Arab world and for Arab publishers eager to reach a European public. This year's fair included a section for children's books, in which 43 European and Arab publishers were represented, and a review section, including representation from some 150 Arab and European reviews and journals. There was a strong Egyptian showing at the fair, with various public and private-sector publishers represented, including Al-Ahram, the General Egyptian Book Organisation and Al-Hilal among the former, and Dar al-Sharouq, al-Sharqiyya, and Merit from the latter. As has been the case at previous fairs, this year's event had a guest of honour, Palestine, whose publishing houses and publishers were given special attention in the schedule of events. Various round-table events and colloquia were organised on features of publishing in Palestine, as well as screenings of Palestinian films, a reading by the Palestinian poet Samih el-Qassim, and performances of Palestinian folk-tales.

Chapter 4. Water Balances in Palestine: Numbers and Political Culture in the Middle East document 6 de 14 Samer Alatout
Introduction
This chapter focuses on four issues related to Palestine’s water balance and regional hydropolitics. The second section discusses various attempts at estimating Palestine’s water balance, each claiming scientific legitimacy and technical authority. The conclusion of this section is that estimates of Palestine’s water balance are both technically uncertain and reflective of the cultural and political contexts within which they are produced. The issue of local hydropolitics — using water resources to manage local political conflict — is not dealt with in this chapter, but this is an important topic and will be the focus of another paper. Because of the complexity of water balances, the third section turns to a discussion of the political grounding of water estimates, an issue seldom considered in literature on water balances in the Middle East. Using new insights from the field of science and technology studies (STS), it is argued that the seemingly neutral and objective language used to discuss Palestine’s water balance is, more often than not, imbued with politics. This is not the same as the claim often heard that water experts are captured by political interests. In all but a few rare cases, it is doubtful that this conspiratorial image holds true under rigorous investigation. General insights from STS, together with particular insights gleaned while researching the culture of water expertise in the Middle East, demonstrate that knowledge about water is necessarily produced within, and shaped by, institutional, cultural, and political contexts. Bearing this in mind, the difficult task of those looking for a workable water-sharing regime between Israel and Palestine is to unpack and make explicit the politics of technical jargon, rather than adding additional layers of obscurity.

Background:
The Israel-PLO Declaration of Principles on Interim Self-Government Arrangements (the DOP), signed in Washington on 13 September 1993, provided for a transitional period not exceeding five years of Palestinian interim self-government in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
Under the DOP, Israel agreed to transfer certain powers and responsibilities to the Palestinian Authority, which includes the Palestinian Legislative Council elected in January 1996, as part of the interim self-governing arrangements in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. A transfer of powers and responsibilities for the Gaza Strip and Jericho took place pursuant to the Israel-PLO 4 May 1994 Cairo Agreement on the Gaza Strip and the Jericho Area and in additional areas of the West Bank pursuant to the Israel-PLO 28 September 1995 Interim Agreement, the Israel-PLO 15 January 1997 Protocol Concerning Redeployment in Hebron, the Israel-PLO 23 October 1998 Wye River Memorandum, and the 4 September 1999 Sharm el-Sheikh Agreement.

As a result of these hostilities, over half the rural population became refugees. Many more became refugees after the 1967 war. Costume and textile traditions have been vastly changed by these events. Very little remains from the decades of upheaval from the 1950s and 1960s. Traditional costume began to resurface in much plainer styles shortly after this period. Without access to locally woven goods or imported fabrics, costumes became less ornate, more practical. The distinction between special occasion and everyday wear was lost, and veils and elaborate headdresses became things of the past. shawal , designed originally for Western markets, amongst them.
