Home Al Quds Jerusalem Jerusalem and Islam Jerusalem and Christianity Ottoman Jerusalem Cultural Dimensions Cultural Dimensions Introduction Palestine the land of Arab arts and cultures It goes without saying that Arab Palestine is the confluence of the three monolithic religions and the cradle of civilizations. Palestine is the land of cultured and innovative Canaanites, the original Palestinians, who excelled relatively in independent characteristics in plastic arts, music, dance, sculpturing and drawing. Furthermore, Palestine strategic location on the Eastern Mediterranean between the ancient flourished civilizations of Egypt (the land of the great pyramids and the Pharos) and Iraq (the land of Mesopotamia) gave it a noticeable cultural prominence. The Arab and Muslim characteristic of Palestinian arts became evident after the advent of Islam and the Muslim conquest of Bead Al Sham (Syria), which Palestine had constituted its southern part. However, the land had been populated already by waves of Arab Semites three millennia earlier The Arab and Muslim monuments bear the witness of Palestine glorious Arab past and heritage. For example, Jerusalem is awash by innumerable Islamic and Christian Arab shrines and holy places like Haram al-Sharif and the Church of Sepulcher. Many mosques and churches exist in Bethlehem and Nazareth.

  • Jerusalem The Wall of Jerusalem - Jerusalem Old City
Jerusalem is surrounded by a wall on all four sides, the purpose of which was to protect the city from inva sion. The earliest was built by the Yabbousites and remnants of the wall are still surrounding the city. Yabous was discovered during the arachaeological digs hgeld in 1960. During Salah Eddin's time, a wall was built and a moat was dug surrounding it to increase the city's defense. In 616H/1210 AD, the great king Issa destroyed the wall so that the crusaders would not be able to take hold of the city. It was renovated several rimes during the mamluki period. The present wall dates back to Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent's period. Its renovation took four years. The wall has several open gates. [Back to up]
Damascus Gate (Bab Al-Amoud) - Jerusalem Old City

The Dome of the Rock - Jerusalem Old City The walled city of Jerusalem, the so-called Old City, is a tightly woven tissue of narrow, sometimes tortuous streets and buildings, with private houses and shops for the most part, but also religious and secular monuments . One building dominates the view of the Old City, "The Dome of the Rock". It does so primarily because of its height, but also because it appears to be independent of everything else around it because in this city of stones it alone is roofed with what looks like gold while its walls shine with tiles of many colors. Because of its location as well as its dimensions, it strikes a posture of visual control over much of the city and the surrounding valleys and hills. Although frequently repaired and restored the Dome of the Rock is today strikingly similar to what it must have been when first built in the last decade of the seventh century.

    Ahlam Shibli
    Personal voyage in nine volumes

Born in the Galilean village of Shibli, Ahlam studiedat the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and Haifa University in Haifa whereshe currently resides. She works as a social worker in the Arab Galileevillages and has taken up photography as a culmination of her childhoodfascination with images. Her photographic style ranges between documentaryand modern expressionistic. Her latest exhibit was entitled "Wadi Saleibin 9 volumes" which was exhibited in many galleries in the country.
The nine volumes of Wadi Saleib is a photographic exhibitionof a neighborhood deserted by its residents through forced deportation, yet it still retains the memories of its occupants- it is occupied by ghostsof memories. The ruins seem like witnesses to human andintimate occurrences. "I have seen, retraced, and perpetuated the pastin the present. I brought light into dark spaces so that they were putinto focus and turned into center stage," explains the artist. She adds:"My memories expose the possibilities to memorize others. I see in frontof me the fantasized memories of the dwellers of the place, memories thatcontain those objects which I photograph." The volumes developed with thebirth of a story out of a typing machine abandoned in an evacuated house."The ending of the stories", concludes Ms. Shibli, "is marked by a symbolicdeaththat is born from an actual death."

Challenges prevailing assumptions about family, courts of law, and the nature of modernity in Muslim societies against the backdrop of Haifa and Jaffa during " the long nineteenth century." Description
The popular image of the family and the court of law in Muslim societies is one of traditional, unchanging social frameworks. Iris Agmon suggests an entirely different view, grounded in a detailed study of nineteenth-century Ottoman court records from the flourishing Palestinian port cities of Haifa and Jaffa. She depicts the shari'a Muslim court of law as a dynamic institution, capable of adapting to rapid and profound social changes indeed, of playing an active role in generating these changes. Court and family interact and transform themselves, each other, and the society of which they form part. Agmon's book is a significant contribution to scholarship on both family history and legal culture in the social history of the Middle East.

About a fifteen minute walk from the street vendors and businesses of the downtown Palestinian cultural capital of Ramallah, is a dangerous subversive place according to the Israeli authorities. So much so that they in fact in 2002 raided the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center and according to the Miami Herald "seized a computer and a cellphone, broke dozens of windows, swept books off shelves, peppered walls with shrapnel and bullets, spit pumpkin seeds on the floor and allegedly stole 3,700 shekels." The Georgetown educated Director Adila Laidi said at the time, "It was just vandalism, part of a conscious desire to ruin everything Palestinian. Once you decide to do that, you go and methodically destroy every institution. Subconsciously, they are dreaming about shoving the whole Palestinian people out of existence." In Occupied Palestine, it is as if you live a dehumanized existence from the day you're born. You are uneqal. You feel it everyday in how power is exercised. That relationship is rarely altered. You are second class and relegated to a Bantustan-like existence. When the people in power talk peace, you see the situation deteriorate. You see loved ones die, killed off by security forces. You face the Separation Wall and are denied entry into Israel to see family members. You learn to hate because you're isolated and you know nothing else.
