Welcome to Palestine! On behalf of the Palestinian people, especially those under siege, curfew, atrocities, massacres, hardship and danger, we would like to thank all of you who are with us physically, in protest or in prayers. We especially thank members of the international solidarity movement and international solidarity campaign who are currently in Palestine sharing these difficult and dark moments with us. We also thank those in the media trying to document what they can, under real danger, of this last chapter of injustice. For those asking about our well-being, we are doing well and our belief in our just cause increases by the minute. We were first in history and, inshallah, we will be last in geography.

    33. Art Of The Mamluks
Illustrated outline of this book by Dr. Esin Atil on the arts on the Mamluk empire of Egypt, Syria, and palestine from 1250 AD, hosted by Islamicity. Illuminated manuscripts and metalwork.
    http://islamicity.com/Culture/atm/atm.htm
In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful Art of the Mamluks Art Of The Mamluks, by Dr. Esin Atil , published by the Smithsonian Press.
Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington, D.C., 1981
    Esin Atil
Publication made possible by a grant from United Technologies Corporation.
About the Author: Esin Atil, a native of Turkey, received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Atil has been curator of Near Eastern art at the Smithsonian Institution's Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Historical Summary: Mamluk Empire (1250 - 1517 AD)
Following the Ayyubid state in 1250 AD, the Mamluk sultans established a formidable empire, ruling Egypt, Syria, and Palestine for more than two hundred and fifty years, their frontiers extending from southeatern Anatolia to the Hijaz and incorporating parts of Sudan and Libya. Soon after coming to power, they defeated the mongols and explled the last of the Crusaders from the Near East. Trade and agriculture flourshied under Mamluk rule, and Cairo, their capital, became one of the wealthiest cities in the Near East and the center of artistic and intellectual activity. It also became the seat of the caliphate and, thus, the most prestegious capital in the Islamic world.
    Illuminated Manuscripts
The exquiste illuminations, calligraphy, and bindings of Mamluk Korans are unequaled in any other Islamic tradition of bookmaking. The technical and artistic virtousity found in these manuscipts is representative of the Mamluks, who, embracing Islam with the fervor of converts, endowed elaborate religious complexes and supplied each major foundation with its set of Korans.

    WorldTravelGate.net®Information about travel in Gaza,palestine,Accommodation,Hotels,Restaurants,Car Rentals,,Travel Agencies.!
    http://www.mideasttravelling.net/palestine/gaza/gaza_culture.htm
Gaza - C ulture G aza Strip is mostly flat and large areas are sandy, often continuing from the beaches, which run along the entire coast. Most of Gaza is governed by the Palestinian National Authority and is the core territory of the new state, while areas of fertile agricultural land are administered by Israel. Gaza's borders are still under Israeli control. The population is about 750,000, of which 300,000 are indigenous, the rest refugees. The numbers of Israeli settlers (illegal inhabitants) are 4,500, all under the protection of the Israeli military. The main city of the strip is Gaza from which the strip has its name. The majority of the population are Muslims while there is group of Christians as well. The economical base of Gaza Strip is highly dependent on Israel, where many Gazans find their everyday job. About 35% of Gaza's GNP is from wages earned in Israel. Israel is also a major trading partner and many Gazan agricultural products are exported from Israel as Israeli products. Little has been achieved in recent years to change the economy of Gaza. The coastline is 40 km, the border to Egypt (which is in practice cut off by an Israeli corridor parallel to the border line) is 11 km. The width of Gaza is at its minimum 6 km and at its maximum 14 km. Annual rainfall seldom exceeds 400 mm and arable land is a mere 13%, of which much is in the hands of Israeli settlers.
