General Description of The Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology
My subject for this month's edition is a book, if you can call it that, which can assist you in fossil identification. The "book" in question, the Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology , is more correctly a collection of books, each concerning specific phyla of the invertebrates. Because of the amount of information available and the size of some groups, most phyla require multiple volumes for complete coverage. The complete set includes 33 individual books by my count. These are available for use in the U.C. Geology Library as you might expect. The complete set or individual volumes may be ordered directly from the Geological Society of America; individual volume prices vary from $20.00 to $52.00 and they do take major credit cards. The GSA does not charge for shipping on orders over $25.00. The Cincinnati Museum of Natural History usually has a volume or two for sale as well. The Treatise can be found on the used book market too but some care should be taken here - some volumes have been recently revised and some prices may be higher than the new prices from the GSA. I'm obviously not going to review each volume since I have only used a few. I will, however, point out some highlights.

INTRODUCTION
The 1879 act establishing the United States Geological Survey (USGS) declares "And all collections of rocks, minerals, soils, and fossils, and objects of natural history, archaeology, and ethnology, made by the Coast and Interior Survey, the Geological Survey, or by any other parties for the Government of the United States, when no longer needed for investigations in progress, shall be deposited in the National Museum." Many of the paleontologists affiliated with the USGS Paleontology and Stratigraphy Branch have been stationed at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) to study and care for the national collections. This close working relationship between the USGS and the NMNH has resulted in the Smithsonian Archives acquiring records and special collections documenting paleontological work of the Survey and its scientists.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A paleontologist carefully chips rock from a column of dinosaur vertebrae. Paleontology (the American spelling; the British spelling is palaeontology ) is the study of the developing history of life on earth, of ancient plants and animals based on the fossil record , evidence of their existence preserved in rocks . This includes the study of body fossils , tracks, burrows, cast off parts, fossilized feces coprolites "), and chemical residues.

Overview
Modern paleontology sets ancient life in its contexts, by studying how long-term physical changes of global geography (" paleogeography ") and climate (" paleoclimate ") have affected the evolution of life, how ecosystems have responded to these changes and have changed the planetary environment in turn, and how these mutual responses have affected today's patterns of biodiversity . So paleontology overlaps with geology , the study of rocks and rock formations, and with botany biology zoology , and ecology , fields concerned with living creatures and how they interact.

Computational Paleontology
Welcome to my Computational Paleontology homepage! This page is devoted to the use of mathematical models, simulation, computer graphics and computers in general in paleontology:
  • Simulation of ontogeny (growth and form)
  • Simulation of evolution and population genetics
  • Population dynamics
  • Simulation in functional morphology (mechanics, fluid dynamics etc.)
  • Computer graphics
  • Statistics and data management
I'm very interested in getting in contact with anyone working in the field, so please mail me at oyvindha@notam.uio.no

Regional News Spring Greetings! Time to renew your membership since we are on a calendar year basis and field school is fast approaching. Please include a CURRENT email address. Here are some of the projects in which members are currently involved:
  • San Felipe de Austin Archeological Project, site of the first Anglo settlement in Texas, and located in San Felipe on FM 1458 across from and adjacent to the Stephen F. Austin State Historic Park. While working at the site, our illustrious president recently recovered a CSA button cover and we now have our first Spanish coin, a silver real (date to be determined). Work is focused on the G. B. Cotton property; Mr. Cotton edited, printed and published the weekly newspaper, The Texas Gazette Brazoria County Antebellum Plantation Survey: members are working with THC regional archeologist Jeff Durst; one survey per month is being completed. San Jacinto Battlefield: metal detecting and shovel testing to determine the movements of the Mexican Army during their battle with the Texas Army. WOW! All of that in addition to work done by our four archeological societies (Brazosport, Deep East Texas. Fort Bend, and Houston).
